Lifelong learning : Formal, non-formal and informal learning in the context of the use of problem-solving skills in technology rich environments
2019
The evolving technological landscape in the digital era has a crucial influence on lifelong learning and the demand for problem‐solving skills. In this paper, we identify associations between formal, non‐formal and informal learning with sufficient problem‐solving skills in technology‐rich environments (TRE). We focus on adults' problem‐solving skills in TRE as a novel approach to investigate formal, non‐formal and informal learning based on data from the Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies. This programme measured 16–64‐year‐old adults' proficiency in problem‐solving skills in TRE. The total sample size was 61 654 individuals from 13 European countries. Our res…
Children's involvement in the design of game-based learning environments
2008
Osallistuminen teknologian suunnitteluun tarjoaa lapsille arvokkaita kokemuksia.
Timbral Environments: An Ecological Approach to the Cognition of Timbre
2011
This study formulates an ecological framework that links the environment and human systems, to support further arguments on the influence of timbre in the music appreciation schemata. At the core of the framework is the notion of timbral environments, which is introduced as an epistemological foundation to characterize perceptual cues of internalized representations of music, and to explore how these are expressed in the dynamics of diverse external environments. The proposed notion merges the concepts of macrotimbre (Sandell, 1998) and soundscape (Schafer, 1977) to distinguish between the formulated framework and traditional approaches to timbre, which are mainly concerned with short-term …
Authorized authentication evaluation framework for constrained environments

2016
Masteroppgave matematikkdidaktikk – Universitetet i Agder 2016 The theme of this master thesis is learning potential in mathematical tasks designed for geometry teaching in GeoGebra in 8th grade. This thesis is written in connection to the project Digital interactive mathematics teaching (DIM), where the goal is to create innovative mathematics teaching by using digital tools in a pedagogic context. Previous research has documented that students learning outcome of the teaching is largely influenced and limited by the tasks that are given. In this context analysis of the tasks learning potential is particular interesting. Therefore, my research question is: What learning potential is it in …
Participation of the young ones in virtual worlds : A look at experiences and motivations
2011
Virtual worlds have become very popular and there have been some attempts to find the motivations and experiences of using them. The aim of this paper is to analyze the motivations and experiences of young ones to utilize virtual worlds. The paper identifies the activities that children perform in virtual worlds, features they use as well as the reasons for abandoning these virtual worlds. The paper presents results of a qualitative field study. The results indicate that features that are liked in the virtual worlds are similar to games. The most liked features for virtual worlds were developing characters and doing things in groups. The activities that were liked the most in virtual worlds…
University students’ (dis)engagement experiences in synchronous sessions during the COVID-19 pandemic
2022
In the past two years, student engagement in online learning situations has become a mutual concern for educators all over the world. The impact of working in online environments and using video and other communication channels on students’ learning experiences is still not fully understood. The present study addresses this question by drawing on students’ written reflections and interviews from the Finnish higher education context collected during the COVID-19 pandemic. It uses the qualitative method of thematic analysis to investigate students’ experiences of interacting in synchronous sessions and their perceptions on (dis)engagement. The analysis shows the importance of versatile teachi…
Reconstructed Landscapes of Northern Youth : Reading the Autobiographies of Finnish Youth, 1945–1960
2021
This chapter explores how growing up environments and landscapes are remembered, described and depicted in autobiographies written by people who experienced the reconstruction era in northern Finland in their childhood and youth. The article is based on a collection of submissions to the essay called “Generations of Youth” in 2010 and archived in the Finnish Folklore Archives. The texts provide an interesting opportunity to investigate the cultural meanings attached to growing up environments, mindscapes, and places of childhood and youth in post-war Finland. The chapter combines approaches from the fields of history as well as humanistic geography. It addresses the question of how children…
"Me ollaan koko ajan liikkeessä" : tutkimus nuorten omaehtoisen liikkumisen muodoista ja merkityksistä tilan kehyksissä
2017
This study examines the meanings and prerequisites of self-organised physical activity from young people’s perspective. The theoretical framework is social space, which enables young people’s experiences to be interpreted in parallel with their physical, social, and cultural environment. Three research questions are addressed: (1) Where does young people’s self-organised physical activity take place? (2) What are the forms of the activity? (3) What meanings do young people associate with the spaces of the activity? The research data were collected within one municipality. The main data consist of 34 theme interviews with young people aged 12 to 16 years. The interviewees were selected mainl…
