Clinical characteristics of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 in Spain: results from the SEMI-COVID-19 Network

2020

ABSTRACTBackgroundSpain has been one of the countries most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.ObjectiveTo create a registry of patients with COVID-19 hospitalized in Spain in order to improve our knowledge of the clinical, diagnostic, therapeutic, and prognostic aspects of this disease.MethodsA multicentre retrospective cohort study, including consecutive patients hospitalized with confirmed COVID-19 throughout Spain. Epidemiological and clinical data, additional tests at admission and at seven days, treatments administered, and progress at 30 days of hospitalization were collected from electronic medical records.ResultsUp to April 30th 2020, 6,424 patients from 109 hospitals were included. …

Lymphadenitis colli durch nichttuberkulöse Mykobakterien (NTM) im Kindesalter - Eine Fallserie und Literaturübersicht

2003

Objective Lymphadenitis colli due to NTM should always be considered in children with cervical Lymphadenitis. For Germany there is a lack of data concerning the incidence, the epidemiology, the diversity and frequency of the different bacteria, the diagnosis, the clinical manifestation and the medical treatment. Methods By means of a questionnaire, which was retrospective for 1985 to 1994 and was sent to 277 children's hospitals in Germany, we collected data on Lymphadenitis colli in Germany. In our study we also incorporated cases from the "National Laboratory for Mycobacteria" in Borstel as well as six cases from our hospital in Mainz. Therefore our data includes both clinical (28) and la…

Acute gastroenteritis outbreaks in Catalonia, Spain: norovirus versus Salmonella.

2008

Objective. To describe the epidemiology of norovirus (NV) and Salmonella gastroenteritis outbreaks in Catalonia between 15 October 2004 and 30 October 2005. Material and methods. Epidemiological data were obtained from outbreak reports. The aetiologic agent was investigated by culture for enteric bacteria, enzyme immunoanalyses, reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and molecular epidemiology genotyping for NV. The x 2 test was used to compare proportions. Incidence rates and their confidence intervals (CI) were calculated assuming a Poisson distribution. Results. A total of 225 acute gastroenteritis (AG) outbreaks were reported, with 3436 persons affected and 115 hospita…

Normierung und Evaluation der Messinvarianz der 8-Item-Kurzform der Center of Epidemiological Studies-Depression Scale (CES-D-8)

2020

Measurement invariance and normative data of the 8-item short form of the Center of Epidemiological Studies-Depression Scale (CES-D-8) Objectives: Female gender is a risk factor for depression. It is questionable whether a given psychometric instrument depicts depressive symptom severity in men and women alike. Therefore, we examined measurement invariance of the Center of Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale-8 (CES-D-8) between women, men and different age groups. Additionally, we aimed providing normative data for CES-D-8. Methods: We assessed depressive symptoms in a German population-based sample (N = 2,507) with the CES-D-8. Gender-distorted items were excluded in the short form. R…

Correlating heatwaves and relative humidity with suicide (fatal intentional self-harm)

2021

AbstractEmpirical evidence suggests that the effects of anthropogenic climate change, and heat in particular, could have a significant impact on mental health. This article investigates the correlation between heatwaves and/or relative humidity and suicide (fatal intentional self-harm) on a global scale. The covariance between heat/humidity and suicide was modelled using a negative binomial Poisson regression with data from 60 countries between 1979–2016. Statistically significant increases and decreases in suicide were found, as well as many cases with no significant correlation. We found that relative humidity showed a more significant correlation with suicide compared to heatwaves and th…

Analyses of odontogenic tumours : the most recent classification proposed by the World Health Organization (2017)

2020

Background The fourth edition of the ‘’WHO Classification of Head and Neck Tumours’’ was published in January 2017 and includes a classification of odontogenic tumours. This review aims to examine the changes made in this new classification in comparison with the previous classification of 2005. Material and Methods An electronic search was conducted in the PubMed, Scopus and Cochrane databases with the keywords “odontogenic tumor”, “WHO classification” and “update”. Studies published from January 2009 to April 2019 with a high level of scientific evidence were included, but studies not published in English, epidemiological studies and studies with a low level of evidence were excluded. Res…

Incidence and factors associated with burnout in anesthesiology: A systematic review

2017

Background. Burnout syndrome has reached epidemic levels among physicians (reported around 50%). Anesthesiology is among the most stressful medical disciplines but there is paucity of literature as compared with others. Analysis of burnout is essential because it is associated with safety and quality of care. We summarize evidence on burnout in anesthesiology. Methods. We conducted a systematic review (MEDLINE up to 30.06.2017). We included studies reporting burnout in anesthesiology with no restriction on role or screening test used. Results. Fifteen surveys/studies described burnout in anesthesiology, including different workers profiles (nurses, residents, consultants, and directors). Al…

Genetically determined hypercholesterolaemia results into premature leucocyte telomere length shortening and reduced haematopoietic precursors

2020

Abstract Aims Leucocyte telomere length (LTL) shortening is a marker of cellular senescence and associates with increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). A number of cardiovascular risk factors affect LTL, but the correlation between elevated LDL cholesterol (LDL-C) and shorter LTL is debated: in small cohorts including subjects with a clinical diagnosis of familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH). We assessed the relationship between LDL-C and LTL in subjects with genetic familial hypercholesterolaemia (HeFH) compared to those with clinically diagnosed, but not genetically confirmed FH (CD-FH), and normocholesterolaemic subjects. Methods and results LTL was measured in mononuclear cells-d…

Obesity and cardiovascular risk: the new public health problem of worldwide proportions

2004

Obesity could be considered a new global health epidemic above all others, especially when it is characterized by central fat distribution. This is illustrated by dramatic provisional data, indicating a continuous increase in the trend of overweight and obese individuals in several countries, including the USA and countries in Europe. Several epidemiological, pathophysiological and clinical studies clearly indicate that two of the major independent risk factors for cardiovascular disease or events are being overweight, and obesity. Accordingly, weight loss and prevention of weight gain has to be considered one of the most important strategies to reduce the incidence of cardiovascular diseas…
