Retrospective study of 124 cases of salivary gland tumors and literature review

2019

Background Salivary gland tumors are a rare and morphologically diverse group of lesions and their frequency is still unknown in several parts of the world. The knowledge of its population characteristics contributes to a better understanding of its etiopathogenesis. Objectives: This study investigated the frequency of salivary gland tumors in a region of southern Brazil and compared these data in a literature review. Material and Methods A retrospective study was conducted of salivary gland tumors diagnosed at two pathology centers from 1995 to 2016. Patient age and gender, tumor site and frequency, histopathological diagnosis, and symptomatology were evaluated. Chi-squared tests were used…

Péri-implantite ou carcinome épidermoïde?

2007

Summary Introduction Squamous cell carcinoma developed around dental implants has seldom been described. It simulates peri-implantitis. The authors present two cases and a literature review. Case reports A 70 year-old woman presented with an exophytic tumor developed around dental implants placed in the anterior part of the mandible. Panoramic X-rays showed major osteolysis, especially around the distal abutment implants. A 72 year-old patient, smoker, presented with chronic lichen planus; he was carrying two implants supporting an overdenture with ball-attachments, placed 15 years before. He presented with an ulcerated symphyseal tumor, bone loss around implant in position 43. The implant …

Systemic chemotherapy in elderly patients with locally advanced and/or inoperable squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck: impact of anemia and …

2003

Abstract A review of the incidence and management of anemia in elderly patients with head and neck carcinoma treated with systemic chemotherapy. The role of recombinant human erythropoietin in preventing or correcting chemotherapy-related anemia has been focused. Data concerning the prospective use of recombinant human erythropoietin (rhEpo) in a series of unfit elderly patients (EPs) treated with carboplatin plus 5-fluorouracil. Patients were randomly assigned to receive subcutaneous rhEpo 10,000 U three times per week (TIW) (23 elderly patients) or no treatment (22 control patients). Recombinant hEpo was able to prevent anemia and to reduce transfusional requirements in treated patients a…

Cone beam computed tomography diagnostic imaging of intra-osseous mucoepidermoid carcinoma in the mandible

2017

Intra-osseous mucoepidermoid carcinoma in the mandible is a rarely reported entity, comprising only 2-3% of all mucoepidermoid carcinomas. Unilocular and/or multilocular radiolucency is characteristic of mucoepidermoid carcinoma, but has a radiographic appearance similar to that of odontogenic benign and malignant tumors and thus cannot be accurately diagnosed on plain films. This article describes a case of a 36-year-old man with intra-osseous mucoepidermoid carcinoma in the left mandible. For a detailed analysis, both panoramic radiograph and cone beam computed tomograph were taken. Important clinico-pathological and imaging features, differential diagnosis and review of the literature ar…

Atypical intraosseous mucoepidermoid carcinoma with two years of evolution and cutaneous infiltration

2018

The intraosseous mucoepidermoid carcinoma is a rare lesion that frequently affects the posterior region of the mandible. This case reports a multilocular osteolytic radiolucency with two years of evolution, that expanded and perforated the cortical bone, with irregular and indefinite margins, that extended from the mandibular angle to the ascendant ramus, with cutaneous ulceration, detected in a 51 years-old male. An incisional biopsy was performed and confirmed the diagnosis of low-grade intraosseous mucoepidermoid carcinoma. The patient was submitted to partial mandibulectomy, neck dissection and post-operative radiotherapy. In three years of follow-up, there was no evidence of tumor recu…

Diagnosis and treatment for central Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma in the mandible: Report of a clinical case in a young patient

2019

A clinical case of a 13 year old male patient with a malignant tumor in the mandibular body area with two years of evolution and associated pain is reported. It was initially diagnosed as low grade central mucoepidermoid carcinoma through Hematoxylin and Eosin (H-E) staining in multiple biopsies. Considering the clinical and radiographic characteristics of the lesion, it was necessary to confirm the diagnosis through Periodic acid-Schiff (PAS). The treatment involved hemimandibulectomy, neck emptying, and complementary radiotherapy. This article aims to present a rare occurrence of this type of intraosseous malignant tumor of glandular origin in a young patient. Key words:Mucoepidermoid car…

Verbesserte Orts- und Kontrastauflösung in der Ultraschalldiagnostik durch Nutzung Harmonischer Frequenzen

2001

Background: The aim of new techniques in head and neck sonography is to increase the sensitivity and the specificity of the examination, With tissue harmonic imaging (THI) and contrast harmonic imaging (CHI) new techniques are available which allow increased contrast and resolution in head and neck sonography as well as a better detection of small blood vessels. Methods: We studied whether these techniques improve sonographic detection of head and neck lymph nodes and primary tumours of the upper aerodigestive tract. Results: The results indicate that THI allows a better detection of cervical lymph nodes. Furthermore, intranodal structures and the borders of the lymph node can be better det…

Long-Segment Early Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Proximal Esophagus: Curative Treatment and Long-Term Follow-Up after 5-Aminolevulinic Acid (5-ALA)-…

2006

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an established treatment for the ablation of dysplastic Barrett's epithelium and early esophageal carcinoma, but no data have been published on curative 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA)-PDT for long-segment early esophageal cancer with infiltration of the upper sphincter. We describe successful curative treatment of an unusual early long-segment squamous cell carcinoma (uT1a,N0) of the proximal esophagus (18 - 28 cm aborally), with three sessions of 5-ALA-PDT. Endoscopic and endosonographic follow-up macroscopically showed a complete remission of the tumor, proven by biopsy showing total histological ablation. After a follow-up period of 23 months, there has been …

Handling and pathology reporting of specimens with carcinoma of the urinary bladder, ureter, and renal pelvis.

2003

Abstract Objective: Pathologists play a pivotal role in the diagnosis and in the report of the pathological features related to prognosis. Methods: To meet these endpoints, the following issues must be accomplished: adequate information about the patient history, proper handling of the specimens, identification of the reliable histopathological techniques necessary to reach the more detailed diagnostic information and evaluate the prognostic variables, and a standardized pathological report. Results: Recent efforts to standardize the histopathological evaluation have generated significant confusion among the urological and pathological communities as well. No consensus has been achieved abo…
