References growth charts: a new practical tool for comparing Posidonia oceanic growth patterns accounting for age and depth

2015

Over the past three decades an increasing amount of dating records dealing with Posidonia oceanica growth performance was incorporated into a variety of studies, from which a dualistic nature of the factors influencing seagrass growth arose. A large amount of literature focused on the role of exogenous factors in explaining rhizome growth variations, while only few studies invoked the importance of endogenous factors in driving growth. A particular attention was paid on the confounding role of shoot age, as endogenous factor, when the effect of exogenous variables on growth performance is analyzed. Shoot age confounding implies serious interpretation problems, since it is difficult to disti…

Macrolepidoptera (Insecta: Lepidoptera) Indicator of Climate Changes

2011

Lately, it has become increasingly clear that global warming has a significant impact on a broad range of organisms, regardless of their ecological and geographical spread. Temperature is one of the most important abiotic factors that determine the spatiotemporal dynamics of structural and functional parameters of populations of Lepidoptera and influencing production and survival of these species of insects in nature. Climate warming has the potential to affect some processes related to the ecology and life cycle of the butterfly, especially directly controlled temperature, such as: gathering the required temperature for a species to reach reproductive maturity, growth initiation and cessat…

High Bacterial Agglutination Activity in a Single-CRD C-Type Lectin from Spodoptera exigua (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)

2017

Lectins are carbohydrate-interacting proteins that play a pivotal role in multiple physiological and developmental aspects of all organisms. They can specifically interact with different bacterial and viral pathogens through carbohydrate-recognition domains (CRD). In addition, lectins are also of biotechnological interest because of their potential use as biosensors for capturing and identifying bacterial species. In this work, three C-type lectins from the Lepidoptera Spodoptera exigua were produced as recombinant proteins and their bacterial agglutination properties were characterized. The lowest protein concentration producing bacterial agglutination against a panel of different Gram+ an…

UNA LISTA COMENTADA DE LOS SPHINGIDAE DE BOLIVIA (INSECTA: LEPIDOPTERA)

2001

An annotated checklist of the Sphingidae (hawkmoths) of Bolivia is presented. A total of 189 species and subspecies are confirmed. Locality data derived from specimens in the collections of the Department of Entomology of the Natural History Museum Noel Kempff Mercado of Santa Cruz de la Sierra; the Bolivian Collection of Fauna, La Paz; The Natural History Museum, London; and the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, Pittsburgh, are given. A map of these localities and a synoptic discussion of their geography and ecology are also provided. Data on species not represented in these collections are collated from the publications of J. Haxaire and D. Herbin and presented. Diagnostic features to e…

The Protected Species of Lepidoptera in the Oak Forest "Dumbrava Sibiului", Romania

2011

This paper presents the results of research on Lepidoptera fauna of protected forest located Dumbrava Sibiu, near Sibiu city . The theme of the work is included in a study of forest biodiversity and Sibiu Lepidoptera "Dumbrava Sibiului" is part of a school project postdoctoral lasted several months in the forest.
The first data on Lepidoptera fauna of the forest were reported by Daniel Czekelius collection and analysis covers a total of 45 species collected from the surrounding forest. An important contribution collections were then collected in the Transylvanian Saxons in 1009 and until around 1960 years and have made such an important contribution to knowledge of this group of insec…

An Overview of Genus-Level Taxonomic Problems Surrounding Argyroploce Hübner (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), with Description of a New…

2002

Argyroploce unedana Baixeras, new species, is described from the Iberian Peninsula. The species is closely related to A. arbutella (L., 1758), which occurs on most of the European continent; the two species are allopatric. Although they share similar biologies, the two can be distinguished by structures of the male and female genitalia. Genitalia variability is analyzed. Forewing patterns and hindwing anal roll are discussed in relation to their systematic significance. The olethreutine wing pattern is reexamined. A review of the genus-level taxonomic problems surrounding Argyroploce Hubner, [1825] and allied genera suggests a fragile situation in the present systematic scenario within the …

Parasitization ofEphestia kuehniellaZeller (Lep., Pyralidae) byPhanerotoma (Phanerotoma) ocularisKohl (Hym., Braconidae)

1993

Laboratory studies of the parasitism by P. (P.) ocularis into E. kuehniella showed that this parasitoid had a great capacity to parasitize the host. Real parasitism rate turned between 84.5% and 100% whereas effective parasitism and adult emergence rate were, comparatively, lower. Superparasitism rate was low (16.57 %). Parasitismus, Superparasitismus und Schlupfraten Laboruntersuchungen zur Parasitierung von Ephestia kuehniella durch P.
