Chemical fingerprint of outdoor PM2.5 in Malta

Intro: RESPIRA (EU Funded - Italia-Malta 07-13) indicated that living in Malta is a risk factor for asthma. Aim: To determine the chemical profile of PM2.5 in Malta, and compare with reference values. Methods: Using FAI pumps at 10l/min/48hr, samples were collected on Teflon and Quartz filters from 6 schools and 46 homes in Malta. Total ICP-MS measurement (Residual+extracted), X ray Fluorescence, and thermo-optical methods(TO) were used for analysis by CNR in Rome. Aeroqual IQM60 counters were used for total PM2.5 mass. All data in ng/m3, Mean, (1st to 3rd quartile) of all 48 hour measurements.

 Miocene rocks of the Ladrilleros-Juanchaco section, located on the NW margin of South America, contain a high diverse and abundant trace fossil assemblage. The relative abundance of Phycosiphon, together with its morphological variations, provides new insights into the environmental conditions. We detail herein readily accessible processes to control previously unobserved robust self-assemblies of nanodiamonds (diamondoids) in micro- and nanocrystals from their mild vapor deposition. The chemical functionalization of uniform and discernible nanodiamonds was found to be a key parameter, and depending on the type of functional group (hydroxy, fluorine, etc.) and its position on the diamondoid, the structure of the discrete deposits can vary dramatically. A tungsten oxide–lutetium bisphthalocyanine n–p–n heterojunction: from nanomaterials to a new transducer for chemo-sensing

We report on a new hybrid heterojunction gas-sensitive device by combining a molecular material with a metal oxide. WO3 was synthesised via an aerosol-assisted chemical vapour deposition technique from a tungsten hexacarbonyl precursor. Onto an inorganic film, LuPc2 was vacuum evaporated. The morphology of the WO3–LuPc2 hybrid films is dominated by the morphological features of the tungsten oxide film, as shown by scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. Raman spectroscopy of the device confirms the presence of both materials. Atomic layer deposition of WO3 thin films using W(CO)6 and O3 precursors

Here we report a new atomic layer deposition (ALD) process for WO3 thin films based on W(CO)6 as a tungsten source and ozone as a source of oxygen. A narrow ALD temperature window is found at 195–205 °C for WO3 with a deposition rate of 0.23 A per cycle. As-deposited films are partially crystalline with root mean square (rms) roughness values of 4.7 nm for 90 nm thick films; annealing the films at 600–1000 °C under oxygen or nitrogen atmospheres enhances the degree of crystallinity considerably. Our results show that the straightforward ALD chemistry of carbonyl compounds and ozone is applicable to the deposition of WO3 thin films.

Subglacial to proglacial depositional environments in an Ordovician glacial tunnel valley, Alnif, Morocco

Abstract This paper presents the sedimentary analysis of an exceptional Ordovician glacial tunnel valley in the eastern part of the Anti-Atlas. The valley infill comprises two major glacial erosion surfaces (striated pavements) each overlain by a fining-upward glacial unit. These units are composed of five distinct facies associations, recording the evolution from subglacial to proglacial environments, and an additional sixth facies association, overtopping the tunnel valley infill, and associated with post-glacial environments. Environmental and depositional controls on laminated freshwater carbonates: An example from the Roman aqueduct of Patara, Turkey

Carbonate deposits in aqueducts are a new high-resolution data source for environmental changes during the time of the Roman Empire, notably in the fields of palaeoclimate and spring hydrology. In order to distinguish environmental effects from those related to depositional setting, laminated carbonate deposits were compared along the entire length of an ancient aqueduct channel at Patara, Turkey. The carbonate deposits, up to 80mm in thickness, are composed of lamina couplets up to 1mm thick of alternating porous microspar and dense, columnar sparite. A partir de Platón se desarrolla en la reflexión gramatical y filosófica griega la idea de que ciertos vocablos tienen un origen onomatopéyico, tomándose como modelo de su uso (tanto por su conveniencia como por su condena) su aparición en el epos homérico. Mientras la filosofía vinculará tales palabras, entendidas como onomatopeyas, al origen del lenguaje, los autores de poética y gramática las estudiarán como elementos significativos en la valoración estética de la poesía. La doctrina griega sobre la onomatopeya pasará, a su vez, a las letras latinas.
