Comparison of mechanical properties and composition of magnetron sputter and plasma enhanced atomic layer deposition aluminum nitride films

2018

A comparative study of mechanical properties and elemental and structural composition was made for aluminum nitride thin films deposited with reactive magnetron sputtering and plasma enhanced atomic layer deposition (PEALD). The sputtered films were deposited on Si (100), Mo (110), and Al (111) oriented substrates to study the effect of substrate texture on film properties. For the PEALD trimethylaluminum–ammonia films, the effects of process parameters, such as temperature, bias voltage, and plasma gas (ammonia versus N2/H2), on the AlN properties were studied. All the AlN films had a nominal thickness of 100 nm. Time-of-flight elastic recoil detection analysis showed the sputtered films t…

New Data from Pleistocene deposit of S. Ciro cave

2014

Quaternary fossil sites in Sicily have been known for a long time and all of them have a common story of human predation and manipulation. Hence, we illustrate the first electrical tomography applied to the study of a fossiliferous deposit in a cave in Sicily. The site investigated is the deposit inside the cave of San Ciro-Maredolce, near Palermo. This study aims to answer the following questions: is the geoelectric survey applicable to quaternary deposit of caves? is the deposit still existing or has been completely emptied? Here we show a ERT model (Electrical Resistivy Tomography) of deposit and possible anthropogenic interactions (presence of historic and\or illegal excavations) with t…

Loading carbonaceous materials with silver for the treatment of chloro-organic compounds in aqueous phase

2012

Many electrochemical technologies, either based on novel concepts (such as microbial fuel cells), experimental setups (such as photoelectrochemical or solar photoelectro-Fenton reactors) or materials (mainly focused on the use of large O2-overpotential anodes like BDD) have been devised in recent years for water remediation. Special attention has been paid to highly toxic, biorefractory organic pollutants such as the chlorinated hydrocarbons, which conjugate toxicity with chemical stability, bioaccumulation and long-range diffusivity [1]. Electroreduction at silver cathodes becomes an interesting alternative to degrade chloro-organic compounds, but it may lead to the accumulation of reactio…

Electrochemical Synthesis of an Organic Thermoelectric Power Generator.

2020

[EN] Energy harvesting through residual heat is considered one of the most promising ways to power wearable devices. In this work, thermoelectric textiles were prepared by coating the fabrics, first with multiple-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) by using the layer-by-layer technique and second with poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) deposited by electrochemical polymerization. Sodium deoxycholate and poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) were used as stabilizers to prepare the aqueous dispersions of MWCNTs. The electrochemical deposition of PEDOT on the MWCNT-coated fabric was carried out in a three-electrode electrochemical cell. The polymerization of PEDOT on the fabric increased the…

Biogas Pollution and Mineral Deposits Formed on the Elements of Landfill Gas Engines

2022

Municipal landfills generate a significant amount of high-energy biogas, which can be used as a renewable gaseous fuel. However, it is necessary to improve the quality of this biogas due to the presence of various chemical compounds. The most common pollutants in landfill biogas include volatile compounds of silicon, sulphur, phosphorus and chlorine. The aforementioned elements, as well as other metals, were found both in the deposits and in the engine oil. The paper presents detailed characteristics of the solid residues formed in selected parts of gas engines powered by landfill biogas. Its elemental composition and morphology were investigated in order to determine the structure and infl…

Chemical mapping of a fumarolic field: La Fossa Crater, Vulcano Island (Aeolian Islands, Italy)

2005

[1] The performance of a newly-developed portable gas analyzer, capable of real-time measurement of CO2, SO2 and H2S concentrations in volcanic gases, was tested at La Fossa Crater, Vulcano Island. The gas analyzer was used to acquire about 3000 determinations over the fumarolic field, allowing the definition of its chemical structure and heterogeneity. Our high-resolution analysis reveals that, in December 2004, the La Fossa fumarolic field was characterized by an oxidized inner core (SO2/H2S ratios of ∼3), and by more reducing conditions on its northern edge (SO2/H2S ratios of ∼1; range: 0.2–3.3). CO2/(SO2+H2S) molar ratios averaged 35 ± 21, with overlapping compositions for rim and inner…
