Water absorption and hydrothermal ageing of epoxy adhesives reinforced with amino-functionalized graphene oxide nanoparticles
2021
Abstract The study is focused on quantitative characterization of water absorption and hydrothermal ageing effects in a room-temperature amine cured epoxy adhesive widely used in automotive, aerospace, construction, and marine industries. Amino-functionalized graphene oxide (mGO) nanoparticles were incorporated into the epoxy (up to 1.72 wt.%) enabled cross-linking reactions and providing high interfacial adhesion, superior reinforcement efficiency and enhanced resistance to hydrothermal ageing of nanocomposites. Anomalous water absorption accompanied by progressive weight loss of samples (down to 7%) is fitted by two-stage models considering additive and coupled contribution from water dif…
Hydrothermal Aging of an Epoxy Resin Filled with Carbon Nanofillers
2020
The effects of temperature and moisture on flexural and thermomechanical properties of neat and filled epoxy with both multiwall carbon nanotubes (CNT), carbon nanofibers (CNF), and their hybrid components were investigated. Two regimes of environmental aging were applied: Water absorption at 70 °
Cure behaviour of epoxy resin matrices for carbon fibre composites
1999
The cure behaviour of two resin formulations (with high and low curing agent content respectively) of an epoxy resin system, used as matrix for carbon fibre composites, was studied through calorimetric analysis. The aim of this work is to investigate the kinetics of this specific epoxy system in order to be able to choose a proper set of processing parameters which will give good composite material properties. The shape of the conversion curves gives evidence of the differences in the cure kinetics of the two systems. Furthermore, the values of the activation energies were determined both for formulation in the conversion range where vitrification occurs, following a phenomenological approa…
Human liver cytosolic epoxide hydrolases.
1988
Human liver epoxide hydrolases were characterized by several criteria and a cytosolic cis-stilbene oxide hydrolase (cEHcso) was purified to apparent homogeneity. Styrene oxide and five phenylmethyloxiranes were tested as substrates for human liver epoxide hydrolases. With microsomes activity was highest with trans-2-methylstyrene oxide, followed by styrene 7, 8-oxide, cis-2-With methylstyrene oxide, cis-1,2-dimethylstyrene oxide, trans-1, 2-dimethylstyrene oxide and 2, 2-dimethylstyrene oxide. With cytosol the same order was obtained for the first three substrates, whereas activity with 2, 2-dimethylstyrene oxide was higher than with cis-1,2-dimethylstyrene oxide and no hydrolysis occurred …
Determination of haemoglobin adducts of acrylamide and glycidamide in smoking and non-smoking persons of the general population
2005
Acrylamide (AA) is a food-borne toxicant suspected to be carcinogenic to humans. It is formed in the heating process of starch-containing food. Currently, there is a great discussion about the possible human health risks connected with the dietary uptake of acrylamide. Haemoglobin adducts of acrylamide and its oxidative metabolite glycidamide are both markers of biochemical effect. However, because glycidamide has a higher carcinogenic potency than acrylamide itself, the glycidamide adduct might mirror the genotoxicity better than acrylamide adducts. In order to gain more information about the human metabolism of acrylamide, we investigated a small group of persons for the effective interna…
Dynamic Mechanical Behavior Analysis of Flax/Jute Fiber-Reinforced Composites under Salt-Fog Spray Environment
2020
Over the last decades, natural fiber-reinforced polymer composites (NFRPs) gained great attention in several engineering fields thanks to the reduction of the environmental impact and the end-of-life cost disposal. Unfortunately, the use of NFRPs is limited, mainly due to their weak resistance against humid environments. Since limited literature is available about the evolution of the dynamic mechanical response of NFRPs under aggressive environments, this paper aims to investigate the damping properties of flax, jute and flax/jute epoxy composites exposed to salt-fog up to 60 days. Furthermore, sodium bicarbonate fiber treatment was performed to improve the composites&rsquo
Design, Synthesis, and Biological Evaluation of Novel Fluorinated Ethanolamines
2011
The preparation of novel fluorinated allylamines and their use as key fragments for the stereoselective synthesis of hydroxyethyl secondary amine (HEA)-type peptidomimetics is described. Our strategy employs chiral sulfinyl imines as synthesis intermediates, by treatment of hemiaminal precursors with two equivalents of vinylmagnesium bromide. The subsequent oxidation of the allylic amines to the corresponding epoxides was achieved by treatment with methyl(trifluoromethyl)dioxirane. Finally, epoxide ring opening with a range of nitrogen nucleophiles provided a library of HEA-derived peptidomimetics with a phenyldifluoromethylene moiety. The biological evaluation of these derivatives revealed…

Effect of filler on the creep characteristics of epoxy and epoxy-based CFRPs containing multi-walled carbon nanotubes
2014
The aim of this work was to determine the effect of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on the elastic and viscoelastic properties of an epoxy resin used in carbon fiber-reinforced plastics (CFRPs) in the matrix-dominated flexural testing mode. Neat and CNTs-containing (1. wt.%) epoxy resin and CFRP specimens were prepared and investigated. Three-point bending tests were carried out on nanocomposite (NC) and CFRP specimens at room temperature in quasi-static and cyclic creep regimes. The main effect of CNTs was observed in the reduction of creep compliance of epoxy (40%) and CFRP (30%), especially at higher stresses. The reduction of creep characteristics especially on viscoelastic and plastic strains …
Glass-basalt/epoxy hybrid composites for marine applications
2011
Abstract The aim of this work is to evaluate the influence of uniaxial basalt fabric layers on the mechanical performances of a glass mat/epoxy composite used for marine applications. Polymer composites, reinforced by glass mat (GFRP), and hybrid ones, reinforced by glass mat and unidirectional basalt fabric, have been produced by vacuum bagging technique. Three points bending and tensile tests have been carried out in order to evaluate the effect of number and position of basalt layers on the mechanical properties of the investigated structures. The experimental tests have showed that the presence of two external layers of basalt involves the highest increase in mechanical properties of hy…
