Multiple risk factors can affect the development of specific reading problems or dyslexia. In addition to the most prevalent and studied risk factor, phonological processing, also auditory discrimination problems have been found in children and adults with reading difficulties. The present study examined 37 children between the ages of 5 and 6, 11 of which had multiple risk factors for developing reading problems. The children participated in a passive oddball EEG experiment with sinusoidal sounds with changes in sound frequency, duration, or intensity. International audience; This paper present the content of the Musée de l'Homme exhibition "Us and them: from prejudice to racism" and provides a detailed explanation of how this content has been presented to the public. In a second section of this paper we explain some of the analysis and concepts, from a biological anthropology perspective, that were the foundation of the exhibition and provides some information about the current situation in France.

Adult musicians show superior auditory discrimination skills when compared to non-musicians. The enhanced auditory skills of musicians are reflected in the augmented amplitudes of their auditory event-related potential (ERP) responses. Kuntscher nailing of femoral shaft fractures in children and adolescents.

We have reviewed 29 cases of very unstable diaphyseal fractures of the femur in children and adolescents treated by Kuntscher nailing. Follow up was for at least 5 years, and in most cases until after the end of growth. There were no post-operative complications, and the mean overgrowth of the femur was 7.06 mm. There was growth disturbance of the proximal femur in one case, but this did not interfere with function. We believe that Kuntscher nailing is indicated in children and adolescents with unstable high velocity fractures of the femoral shaft.

Gait asymmetry in patients with limb length discrepancy.

Foot loading patterns and neuromuscular function of both limbs during walking were investigated on 25 patients with limb length discrepancy. Plantar pressures and 2-D ground reaction forces were recorded simultaneously with electromyographic activities at two different walking speeds. Bilateral comparison indicated that moderate limb length discrepancies resulted in asymmetrical gait patterns. The duration of the stance phase was reduced in the short limb in both walking speeds. Decreased prevalence of left-handedness among females with male co-twins: evidence suggesting prenatal testosterone transfer in humans?

Studies of singletons suggest that right-handed individuals may have higher levels of testosterone than do left-handed individuals. Prenatal testosterone levels are hypothesised to be especially related to handedness formation. In humans, female members from opposite-sex twin pairs may experience elevated level of prenatal exposure to testosterone in their intra-uterine environment shared with a male. Effect of intramedullary gradual elongation of the shorter limb on gait patterns

Background: Seven young patients were followed 52 weeks after intramedullary lengthening for limb length discrepancy (LLD). The mean LLD before surgery was 3.0 ± 1.1 cm and 1 year after surgery at the time of the nail-removal it was 0.3 ± 0.3 cm. Methods: The plantar pressures and the ground reaction forces (GRF) were recorded simultaneously with electromyographic (EMG) activities at normal and fast walking speeds.
