Theory of vibrational anomalies in glasses

2015

Abstract The theory of elasticity with spatially fluctuating elastic constants (heterogeneous-elasticity theory) is reviewed. It is shown that the vibrational anomalies associated with the boson peak can be qualitatively and quantitatively explained in terms of this theory. Two versions of a mean-field theory for solving the stochastic equation of motion are presented: the coherent-potential approximation (CPA) and the self-consistent Born approximation (SCBA). It is shown that the latter is included in the former in the Gaussian and weak-disorder limit. We are able to discuss and explain cases in which the change of the vibrational spectrum by varying an external parameter can be accounted…

Physical model, theoretical aspects and applications of the flight of a ball in the atmosphere. Part I: Modelling of forces and torque, and theoretic…

1991

A model of the forces and the torque operating on a ball that is flying with rotation in the atmosphere of the Earth, and the resulting system of ordinary differential equations, are derived from mechanics and aerodynamics. The system of equations allows the theoretical aspects of the flight of a ball, such as the boundedness of its kinetic energy, the curvature of the orbit or the velocity function, to be investigated using certain transformations of the variables. The solutions of the corresponding ordinary or boundary value problems, computed numerically, are used to treat certain tasks in international ball games, for example, the maximum and minimum velocities of a volleyball service.

Spin-orbit couplings within the equation-of-motion coupled-cluster framework: Theory, implementation, and benchmark calculations.

2015

We present a formalism and an implementation for calculating spin-orbit couplings (SOCs) within the EOM-CCSD (equation-of-motion coupled-cluster with single and double substitutions) approach. The following variants of EOM-CCSD are considered: EOM-CCSD for excitation energies (EOM-EE-CCSD), EOM-CCSD with spin-flip (EOM-SF-CCSD), EOM-CCSD for ionization potentials (EOM-IP-CCSD) and electron attachment (EOM-EA-CCSD). We employ a perturbative approach in which the SOCs are computed as matrix elements of the respective part of the Breit-Pauli Hamiltonian using zeroth-order non-relativistic wave functions. We follow the expectation-value approach rather than the response-theory formulation for p…

Equation-of-motion coupled cluster perturbation theory revisited

2014

The equation-of-motion coupled cluster (EOM-CC) framework has been used for deriving a novel series of perturbative corrections to the coupled cluster singles and doubles energy that formally con- verges towards the full configuration interaction energy limit. The series is based on a Møller-Plesset partitioning of the Hamiltonian and thus size extensive at any order in the perturbation, thereby rem- edying the major deficiency inherent to previous perturbation series based on the EOM-CC ansatz. © 2014 AIP Publishing LLC. STOCHASTIC DYNAMICS OF TWO PICOPHYTOPLANKTON POPULATIONS IN A REAL MARINE ECOSYSTEM

2013

A stochastic reaction-diffusion-taxis model is analyzed to get the stationary distribution along water column of two species of picophytoplankton, that is picoeukaryotes and Prochlorococcus. The model is valid for weakly mixed waters, typical of the Mediterranean Sea. External random fluctuations are considered by adding a multiplicative Gaussian noise to the dynamical equation of the nutrient concentration. The statistical tests show that shape and magnitude of the theoretical concentration profile exhibit a good agreement with the experimental findings. Finally, we study the effects of seasonal variations on picophytoplankton groups, including an oscillating term in the auxiliary equation…

Numerical relativistic hydrodynamics: Local characteristic approach.

1991

We extend some recent Ishock capturing methodsR designed to solve nonlinear hyperbolic systems of conservation laws and which avoid the use of artifical viscosity for treating strong discontinuities to a relativistic hydrodynamics system of equations. Some standard shock-tube problems and radial accretion onto a Schwarzschild black hole are used to calibrate our code.

CFC+: Improved dynamics and gravitational waveforms from relativistic core collapse simulations

2004

Core collapse supernovae are a promising source of detectable gravitational waves. Most of the existing (multidimensional) numerical simulations of core collapse in general relativity have been done using approximations of the Einstein field equations. As recently shown by Dimmelmeier et al (2002a,b), one of the most interesting such approximation is the so-called conformal flatness condition (CFC) of Isenberg, Wilson and Mathews. Building on this previous work we present here new results from numerical simulations of relativistic rotational core collapse in axisymmetry, aiming at improving the dynamics and the gravitational waveforms. The computer code used for these simulations evolves th…

Method to obtain shear-free two-fluid solutions of Einstein's equations.

1989

We use the Einstein equations, stated as an initial-value problem (3+1 formalism), to present a method for obtaining a class of solutions which may be interpreted as the gravitational field produced by a mixture of two perfect fluids. The four-velocity of one of the components is assumed to be a shear-free, irrotational, and geodesic vector field. The solutions are given up to a set of a hyperbolic quasilinear system.

Diffusivity in force-free simulations of global magnetospheres

2021

Abstract: Assuming that the numerical diffusivity triggered by violations of the force-free electrodynamics constraints is a proxy for the physical resistivity, we examine its impact on the overall dynamics of force-free aligned pulsar magnetospheres endowed with an equatorial current sheet. We assess the constraint violations as a diffusivity source. The effects of modifications on electric fields used to restore force-free conditions are not confined to the equatorial current sheet, but modify the magnetospheric dynamics on timescales shorter than the pulsar rotational period. These corrections propagate especially via a channel that was unexplored, namely, changes induced to the electric…

Role of gravity in the pair creation induced by electric fields

2018

We analyze the pair production induced by homogenous, time-dependent electric fields in an expanding space-time background. We point out that, in obtaining the semiclassical Maxwell equations, two distinct notions of adiabatic renormalization are possible. In Minkowski space the two recipes turn out to be equivalent. However, in the presence of gravity only the recipe requiring an adiabatic hierarchy between the gravitational and the gauge field is consistent with the conservation of the energy-momentum tensor.
