Basic theoretical considerations on the statistical properties of the speckle phenomenon indicate that a conventional quantization (intervals of uniform width) of the received and envelope detected RF — signal is not adequate. We therefore propose a quantization scheme which is based on the application of quantization intervals producing always the same confidence level (adaptive quantization). Scattering studies of large scale structures at the ultra small angle neutron scattering instrument S18

Abstract In recent years ultra small angle neutron scattering (USANS) has developed into a powerful standard method for large scale structure investigations. The upgraded instrument S18 at the ILL's 58 MW high flux reactor is operated routinely with increasing beam time demand. The performance of the instrument and its abilities will be discussed in this paper. A peak to background ratio better than 10 5 is reached using Agamalian's tail reduction method. A q -range from 2.10 −5 up to 5.10 −2 A −1 can be covered. This allows a clear overlap with standard pinhole SANS instruments. A tool for a first analysis of architectural façades

Abstract This work presents a tool for analysing the figurative structure of architectural facades. The procedure begins by singling out the elementary shapes which make up the facade image; it detects and identifies them as “area objects”, even if present in combination in virtual or mental form and groups them into classes of equal objects. A second step is the analysis of the inner structure of the classes: equidistant, arithmetical and geometrical sequences, or alternate distances are distinguished. The procedure ends by singling out the symmetries which structure the facade image and displaying them, pointing out their implied hierarchy through a thickness differentiation.

Sodium Adsorption on the TiO2110 Surface an XAFS Structural Study

The adsorption site of sodium atoms deposited onto a clean TiO2(110) surface has been determined by EXAFS. The best result is obtained for an 'in-between' site where the sodium is bound to two bridging oxygen atoms at 2.25 A and one in-plane one at 2.40 A in full agreement with DFT calculations. At higher coverage the site becomes a hollow site where Na is equidistant to the three oxygen atoms at 2.30 A.

Returning to musical universals - Question of equidistant scale

It is widely accepted that asymmetries in intervals of the musical scale (i.e., inequalities of the interval steps) serve as “orientation points so that we can know ‘where’ we are in the scale” (Krumhansl, Snyder). This feature is often treated as universal (Dowling, Harwood, Trehub, etc.). At the same time, there is evidence of equitonics (equidistant scales) in various world musics. Examples of equitonics can be found in European folk music (Grainger, Sachs, Sevåg, etc.), as well as in “exotic” music cultures. On the discrimination of spatial intervals by the blind cave fish (Anoptichthys jordani).

The performance of the blind cave fish in discriminating spatial intervals was investigated. The fish had to discriminate between pairs of grids consisting of equidistant vertical bars. The intervals between the bars on the grid to be chosen were kept constant while the intervals between the bars on the other grid were altered in steps so as to become gradually closer to the interval between the bars on the grid to be chosen. It was found that the fish were still able to discriminate between the two grids when the difference between the bar intervals amounted to at least 1.5 mm.
