KLUM@GTAP: Introducing biophysical aspects of land-use decisions into a general equilibrium model: A coupling experiment

2006

In this paper the global agricultural land use model KLUM is coupled to an extended version of the computable general equilibrium model (CGE) GTAP in order to consistently assess the integrated impacts of climate change on global cropland allocation and its implication for economic development. The methodology is innovative as it introduces dynamic economic land-use decisions based also on the biophysical aspects of land into a state-of-the-art CGE; it further allows the projection of resulting changes in cropland patterns on a spatially more explicit level. A convergence test and illustrative future simulations underpin the robustness and potentials of the coupled system. Reference simulat…

Three zone modeling of downdraft biomass gasification : equilibrium and finite kinetic approach

2013

Mathematical models and simulations are being practiced exceedingly in the field of research and development work. Simulations provide a less expensive means of evaluating the benefits and associated risk with applied field. Gasification is a complex mechanism, which incorporates thermochemical conversion of carbon based feedstock. Therefore, simulation of gasification provides a better comprehension of physical and chemical mechanism inside the gasifier than general conjecture and assist in optimizing the yield. The main objectives of present thesis work involve formulation of separate sub-model for pyrolysis and oxidation zone from published scientific references, and assembling it with p…

Propuesta de un test para determinar el conocimiento conceptual de estudiantes universitarios sobre la constante de equilibrio químico y su aplicació…

2014

This article outlines a procedure that was used to develop a written test for evaluating the conceptual knowledge of chemical equilibrium constant among university students. The concepts in the subject matter were carefully defined through propositional statements. Students" understanding of the topic was determined through interviews. These data were used to produce nine multiple choice questions. Each question was designed to identify misconceptions related to the chemical equilibrium constant. The test was evaluated by foure associate professors and was administred to a total of 196 spanish university students. This test has a Cronbach"s alpha reliability of 0.63 and its content validity…

Analysis of Equilibrium at the Euro Area Level from a New Model Perspective

2015

This paper aims to address issues related to equilibrium at the Euro Area. Research methodology implies a wide range of methods and techniques that are used to analyze macroeconomic phenomena and processes at the Euro Area. Following the empirical analyses, namely exploratory factor analysis and structural equation modeling procedure, we propose a model of equilibrium in the Euro zone, an area characterized by the existence of market with turbulence and search frictions. Using this econometric modeling technique, we test and estimate causal relationships that combines a series of empirical data and quantitative causal hypotheses.

The dissipative linear Boltzmann equation for hard spheres

2005

The authors prove existence and uniqueness of a Maxwellian, normalized equilibrium state for a dissipative linear Boltzmann equation with hard-sphere collision kernel modeling a granular gas and, for initial data with finite temperature and entropy, strong L 1 convergence (obtained through compactness arguments) toward the equilibrium of the solutions in the space-homogeneous case. The form of the equilibrium state, which is universal for the family of collision operators including hard, soft and Maxwellian interactions, is guessed through a grazing collision asymptotics and then proved to be the equilibrium state through Fourier analysis. Uniqueness and strong L 1 convergence proofs follow…

Dynamics in stochastic evolutionary models

2014

First published: 01 February 2016 We characterize transitions between stochastically stable states and relative ergodic probabilities in the theory of the evolution of conventions. We give an application to the fall of hegemonies in the evolutionary theory of institutions and conflict, and illustrate the theory with the fall of the Qing dynasty and the rise of communism in China. We are especially indebted to Juan Block for his many comments and suggestions. We would also like to thank Drew Fudenberg, Kevin Hasker, Matt Jackson, Peyton Young, and five anonymous referees. We are grateful to NSF Grant SES-08-51315 and to the MIUR PRIN 20103S5RN3 for financial support.

Persistence and turnover in regional unemployment disparities

1998

PEHKONEN J. and TERVO H. (1998) Reg. Studies, 32 , 445-458, Persistence and turnover in regional unemployment disparities. This study investigates persistence and turnover in regional unemployment disparities in Finland by examining time-series data on 10 labour districts and 423 municipalities. The data on the labour districts indicates that regional unemployment disparities are rather persistent and that steady-state unemployment rates differ considerably across the districts. The results on the municipality level data, however, suggest the presence of substantial intra-distribution dynamics and that the degree of persistence is less profound than the labour district data indicates. Genetic variation at the perilipin (PLIN) locus is associated with obesity-related phenotypes in White women

2004

Perilipin coats intracellular lipid droplets and modulates adipocyte lipolysis. We have evaluated the association between several polymorphisms at the perilipin (PLIN) locus (PLIN1 : 6209T > C, PLIN4 : 11482G > A, PLIN5 : 13041A > G, and PLIN6 : 14995A > T) with obesity-related phenotypes in 1589 White subjects randomly selected from a general Spanish population. In women (n = 801), the less common alleles of PLIN1 and PLIN4, in strong linkage disequilibrium (D' : 0.96), were significantly associated with lower body mass index. Carriers of the allele 2 (6209C) at the PLIN1 locus weighed significantly less (-2.2 kg; p = 0.007) than women homozygotes for the wild-type genotype. The same was t…
