Detection and prevention of enhanced biological phosphorus removal deterioration caused by Zoogloea overabundance.

2008

A sequencing batch reactor was operated in the conventional anaerobic-aerobic mode for enhanced biological phosphorus removal using acetate as the sole substrate. Despite the nutrients concentrations in the influent being high enough to satisfy the biological requirements, Zoogloea ramigera managed to grow in the system until it had negative effects on the process performance. The excess of exocellular polymeric material produced by this microorganism contributed to a viscous bulking phenomenon and caused important settling problems. The examination of the sludge under the microscope was a valuable tool to diagnose the cause of the imbalance in the process. The strategy adopted to avoid the…

Glove perforation during oral surgical procedures

2006

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of glove perforation among undergraduates and residents performing maxillofacial surgery and identify procedures associated with the perforations. Study Design: For this purpose, 200 pairs of surgical gloves were used. For inspecting the perforations, the gloves were filled with water, at least 500 ml. Results: Sixteen gloves (8%) were perforated, 8 (4%) by residents and 8 (4%) by undergraduate students. Only the residents noticed that 2 gloves (1%) were perforated and identified the object causing the perforation. The left hand was the more affected with 9 perforations (4.5%). The finger pulp was the region most affected with …

Utilización del manguito de isquemia en artroplastia total de rodilla. Práctica habitual en la Comunidad Valenciana y revisión bibliográfica

2019

The aim of this study is to know which is the routine clinical practice related to the use of ischemic tourniquet in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in hospitals of Comunidad Valenciana and to make a Literature review. We performed a retrospective, descriptive, observational study based on questioner surveys of specialists in Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology in 9 public Hospitals of Comunidad Valenciana 96, 9% of surgeons preferred the use of ischemic tourniquet in protheses implantation, versus 3,1% who did not. Among those who used Ischemic tourniquet, 57,8% preferred to inflate it before establishing a sterile field versus 39,1% who inflated the tourniquet once the sterile field was est…

Use of a new aneurysm clip with an inverted-spring mechanism to facilitate visual control during clip application. Technical note.

1995

✓ When operating on deep-seated cerebral aneurysms, the surgeon's visual control of clip application may be impaired by the clip holder unless adjacent structures are retracted. To improve visual control and reduce the necessity for retraction, the senior author (A.P.) developed a new concept: an aneurysm clip with an inverted-spring mechanism. The clip has two jaws that point away from the clip blades. The jaws of the clip holder articulate with the inner side of the clip jaws. By distending the jaws of the clip holder the blades of the clip are opened and vice versa. Thus the visual field increases while the clip application is proceeding. This instrumentation is useful, especially in cas…

Hemoglobin point-of-care testing: the HemoCue system.

2013

Besides the use of traditional laboratory resources, the diagnosis of anemia can also be accomplished by assessing hemoglobin (Hb) concentration with point-of-care testing (POCT) devices such as the HemoCue test systems. In several situations, these devices might suitably replace traditional laboratory testing, including several areas of health care where a very rapid Hb measurement might be required to make immediate therapeutic decisions. The use of these devices, however, should fulfill some basic criteria, including economic, clinical, and regulatory issues; appropriate training of the users and knowledge of test requirements, performance, limitations, and potential interferences; the u…

Auxilum Medicine: A Cloud Based Platform for Real-Time Monitoring Medical Devices

2015

Nowadays, time is a very valuable resource and can make the difference between life and death. Having knowledge about this fact we decided to deal with one of the most important aspects of contemporary medicine, EMS (emergency medical services) response time. Modern systems that encourage intelligent communication methods between medical devices and doctors are a must in ubiquitous health care environments. Auxilum Medicine fosters a triple-win situation regarding the relationship between medical institutions, doctors and patients. Emergency patients should be treated with utmost care because their life is hanging by a thread if nobody is present to take immediate action. We are presenting …

Re-exposure in cone beam CT of the dentomaxillofacial region: a retrospective study.

2018

Cone beam CT (CBCT) often uses a smaller field of view compared to conventional CT scans. This might lead to a wrong field of view with the need for secondary exposure (“retakes”). The purpose of this retrospective study was to assess the frequency of re-exposures in CBCT and to identify whether the parameters age, gender, and field of view have an influence on the re-exposure of the patient. Additionally, the causes of re-exposures were determined and categorized. METHODS: In a retrospective cohort study CBCT images of 4986 patients from the patient database from the Department of Oral Radiology, University Medical Center of the Johannes Gutenberg University, Mainz, Germany were included a…

Prognostic Impact of let-7e MicroRNA and Its Target Genes in Localized High-Risk Intestinal GIST: A Spanish Group for Research on Sarcoma (GEIS) Study

2020

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNAs that negatively regulate gene expression at the post-transcriptional level, and they have been described as being associated with tumor prognosis. Here, miRNA profiling was planned to explore new molecular prognostic biomarkers in localized intestinal high-risk GIST. Paraffin tumor blocks of 14 and 86 patients were used in the discovery and expansion sets, respectively. GeneChip miRNA v3.0 was employed to identify the miRNAs differentially expressed between relapsed and non-relapsed patient samples, which were validated in the expansion set, by qRT-PCR. RT2 Profiler PCR Array was used for the screening of let-7e targets. Expression levels were co…
