An optimised tapered shape of the terminal contact elements in biological attachment devices

Many biological attachment devices of insects, spiders and geckoes consist of arrays of hairs (setae), which are terminated by contact elements of different shapes. However, the most frequently observed shape is a thin plate-like spatula. In spite of a rather wide range of sizes and thicknesses, most spatulae of different animals are not uniform but possess a gradient in thickness. The thickness of spatulae in the longitudinal section becomes gradually thinner close to the tip. Scopo di questo lavoro è stato, pertanto, quello di studiare l’effetto del flusso elongazionale su nanocompositi a base di miscele poliammide/polietilene al fine di valutare come questo possa influenzare e modificare le principali proprietà. In particolare, si è osservato come variano le proprietà meccaniche fra il materiale isotropo (piastrine ottenute per stampaggio a compressione) e il materiale orientato ottenuto per filmatura in bolla.

Photocatalytic inactivation of Legionella Pneumophila and aerobic bacteria consortium in water over TiO2/SiO2 fibres in a continuous reactor

A continuous photoreactor, working in a total recycle mode and irradiated by a low-pressure Hg lamp, has been used to study the bactericidal effect of a photocatalyst, formed by TiO2 embedded in SiO2 fibres, on Legionella pneumophila and a consortium of common gram-negative aerobic bacteria: (Escherichia coli, Klebsiella sp., Pseudomona sp. and Proteus sp.) in water. Uropathogenic Escherichia coli are the most common cause of urinary tract infections,and quinolones-resistant strains cause growing concern in developing countries. This study provides relevant data in relation to the molecular epidemiology of these isolateswith respect to the distribution of integron among them and in doing so, to control the infections and adopt efficient strategies. This study was performed on 96 strains of E. coliisolated from patients with community acquired urinary tract infections in Jahrom, Iran.
