Compression Methods for Microclimate Data Based on Linear Approximation of Sensor Data
2019
Edge computing is currently one of the main research topics in the field of Internet of Things. Edge computing requires lightweight and computationally simple algorithms for sensor data analytics. Sensing edge devices are often battery powered and have a wireless connection. In designing edge devices the energy efficiency needs to be taken into account. Pre-processing the data locally in the edge device reduces the amount of data and thus decreases the energy consumption of wireless data transmission. Sensor data compression algorithms presented in this paper are mainly based on data linearity. Microclimate data is near linear in short time window and thus simple linear approximation based …
Torque peak reduction and overload monitoring of induction motors in offshore drilling operations
2015
Current drivetrain design procedures for electric actuation systems operating in offshore conditions typically consider two major requirements: to provide sufficient steady-state and maximum motor torques. As a result of this, no information regarding the transient state (e.g. during motor acceleration) is utilized when selecting drivetrain components. This leads to potentially dangerous situations when motors undergo saturation in these regions due to too high dynamic loads. A common reason for this (apart from lack of information about transient state when designing a drivetrain) is applying trapezoidal reference motion profiles that cause discontinuities in system acceleration and infini…
An Advanced Numerical Model in Solving Thin-Wire Integral Equations by Using Semi-Orthogonal Compactly Supported Spline Wavelets
2003
Abstract—In this paper, the semi-orthogonal compactly sup- ported spline wavelets are used as basis functions for the efficient solution of the thin-wire electric field integral equation (EFIE) in frequency domain. The method of moments (MoM) is used via the Galerkin procedure. Conventional MoM directly applied to the EFIE, leads to dense matrix which often becomes computation- ally intractable when large-scale problems are approached. To overcome these difficulties, wavelets can be used as a basis set so obtaining the generation of a sparse matrix; this is due to the local supports and the vanishing moments properties of the wavelets. In the paper, this technique is applied to analyze elec…

Strategic cyber threat intelligence : Building the situational picture with emerging technologies
2020
In 2019, e-criminals adopted new tactics to demand enormous ransoms from large organizations by using ransomware, a phenomenon known as “big game hunting.” Big game hunting is an excellent example of a sophisticated and coordinated modern cyber-attack that has a significant impact on the target. Cyber threat intelligence (CTI) increases the possibilities to detect and prevent cyber-attacks and gives defenders more time to act. CTI is a combination of incident response and traditional intelligence. Intelligence modifies raw data into information for decision-making and action. CTI consists of strategic, operational, or tactical intelligence on cyber threats. Security event monitoring, event-…
Honouring the opening: Unfolding the rich ground between the philosophical thinking of Martin Heidegger and practice-based empirical work
2021
The aim of this article is to bring philosophical thinking closer to practice-based empirical work. Using Martin Heidegger’s philosophy, it offers a bridge between these two worlds, attempting to provide philosophical depth to the findings of a hermeneutic phenomenological study. This process unfolded through the appearance of three intertwined, potential, meaningful modes of being in the lifeworld: space as a condition for being and being for worlding the world; temporal and spatial self-being, the existence of multiple selves in time and space; and suffering and thriving as modes of being. The article extends the dialogue and concludes with key reflections and insight for research practic…
Membrane distillation: Solar and waste heat driven demonstration plants for desalination
2013
Abstract The development of small to medium size, autonomous and robust desalination units is needed to establish an independent water supply in remote areas. This is the motivation for research on alternative desalination processes. Membrane distillation (MD) seems to meet the specific requirements very well. This work is focused on experimental studies on full scale demonstration systems, utilizing a parallel multi MD-module setup. Three different plant concepts are introduced, one of them is waste heat driven and two of them are powered by solar thermal collectors. Design parameters and system design are presented. After the analysis of plant operation a comparison among the plants as we…
Automated single ring infiltrometer with a low-cost microcontroller circuit
2015
Automation of a new single ring infiltrometer.Data acquisition system based on the open source microcontroller platform Arduino.New method to minimize the disturbance of the soil surface.New approach to process transducer output. A method to automate data collection with a compact infiltrometer under constant head conditions was developed. The infiltrometer consists of a containment ring with a small quasi-constant head of water (i.e., 2-3mm) that is controlled by a Mariotte reservoir and a data acquisition system based on the open source microcontroller platform Arduino and a differential pressure transducer. The presented design can be easily reproduced and operated. The infiltrometer was …

2009
MIC celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2009 and Xstrata Nikkelverk celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2010. Both anniversaries are certainly worth celebrating and with this article Xstrata Nikkelverk salutes MIC at this special occasion. This article is about process control developments at Xstrata Nikkelverk during the last 40 years. We also give an overview of the current status and a view on the current and future trends of process control at the Nikkelverk renery.
Toward Successfully Integrating Mini Learning Games into Social Virtual Reality Environments : Recommendations for Improving Open and Distance Learni…
2017
Social virtual reality environments, also known as 3D virtual immersive environments, are threedimensional computer-generated virtual spaces that are increasingly used in attendance-based and distance education. Thanks to their unique characteristics that separate them from two-dimensional virtual learning environments, social virtual reality environments can enhance distance education efficacy when used in combination with applying instructional methodologies such as situated learning, experiential learning and game-based learning. The authors of this paper describe the design and findings of a research study on game-based learning in social virtual immersive environments. The research met…
