Between the fifteenth and the eighteenth centuries, collections of «illustrious women» were a very widely spread genre all over Europe. Humanistic and courtly in their origins, they were linked to the discourse of women´s «excellence» and they transmitted the values of privilege and aristocratic ethics. At the same time, they showed ambivalent, disturbing and powerful images of «women on top». What is the purpose of portraying a branch from a pear tree in bloom and fruit, of listing hundreds of citrus varieties or of dissecting a huge truffle? When Cosimo III (1642–1723), the penultimate grand duke of the Medici dynasty, commissioned artists and botanists alike to create comprehensive visual and textual catalogues of Tuscan flora, aesthetics and curiosity seemed to go hand in hand with a demonstration of knowledge and prosperity. L’intervento mira a una ridefinizione critica della questione legata al rapporto tra cristiani ed ebrei in Sicilia dopo l’espulsione di fine Quattrocento, e intende rimarcare la riattivazione di un interesse per gli ebrei che seguiva il progetto del loro reintegro nei Regni di Napoli e Sicilia da parte di Carlo III (l’editto borbonico, del 1740, era revocato dopo sei anni). A partir d’algunes investigacions sobre academies literaries, l’article focalitzara en l’academia musical que Joan de Borja i Castro tenia a Madrid. En aquest sentit, si el mecenatge literari cortesa ja es un tema amb multiples variants, l’aproximacio al patrocini d’altres activitats artistiques, com el cas de la musica, ho es encara mes.
