I Segni premonitori del Giudizio Universale in un inedito testo tedesco del XV secolo

2022

Numerous lists of the premonitory signs of the Last Judgment and wider narratives focussing on the same motif, which presents variants and articulated typologies, circulated throughout the Middle Ages, both in Latin and in the vernacular languages. Also in Germany the motif continues to be present in literature up to the threshold of the modern age, with the Lutheran Reform which is, also in this case, a watershed. The purpose of the contribution is the philological-literary analysis of a prose composition, in late German, devoted to the 15 Signs of Judgment, still unpublished, preserved in the ms. München, BStB cgm 522 (ff. 163v-166v), datable around 1470. The codex contains a miscellany o…

A Closed Book: Opacity of the Human Self in Mullā Ṣadrā

2014

Mullā Ṣadrā Shīrāzī (d. 1636) subscribes at large to the Avicennian view according to which the human subject is always and fully aware of herself. At the same time, his eschatology hinges on the Qur’ānic motive of the soul as a closed book that is first opened on the Final Day, that is, on the idea that each soul’s share in the afterlife should be understood as the full revelation of the soul’s true nature to itself. The two ideas thus have seemingly contradictory entailments: the soul is fully aware of and transparent to itself, but at the same time it has aspects that can remain opaque to it, at least in this life. The task of this paper is to investigate whether Ṣadrā can coherently hol…

Oczyszczający sąd Boży. Ekumeniczna „bilingwalizacja” nauki o pośmiertnym oczyszczeniu w świetle badań biograficznych

2017

Wspomniana perspektywa badawcza eksponuje m.in. trwałość każdej indywidualnej biografii, znaczenie samopoznania i niezbywalną odpowiedzialność za dojrzewanie do pełni własnej tożsamości. …

The issue of the reality of hell in the teaching of the Catholic Church

2019

One of the foundations of the Christian faith is the truth about eternal life. All people are well aware that life on earth will end sometime. Death is the end of earthly existence, but it is not the end definitive. As Christians, we believe that death is the beginning of a new life, a transition to a new reality, a reality that will never end and will pass away. God, offering us salvation through Jesus Christ, wants that for every person this new existence is heaven, where He will be the greatest reward. The creator, however, does not deprive man of free will and the possibility of deciding his fate, which is why he accepts the unreasonable possibility of rejection by the creatures of his …

Od satysfaktoryjnego do uświęcającego modelu czyśćca. Perspektywa ekumeniczna

2016

Christian eschatology is a relatively neglected area within the ecumenical debate. This may indicate that the issues in this area do not have such a destructive impact on the interconfessional relations as the questions of soteriology and ecclesiology. At the same time it is known that the issue of indulgences for the dead was the cause of the sixteenth-century dispute within the Church over the doctrine of justification. The consensus on the aforementioned doctrine, reached in 1999, put an end to this chapter. However, the declaration requires the reception of both confessions in the Church doctrine, which involves expressing the content of faith in a language understood in other theologic…

Sull'orientamento escatologico della filosofia

2018

The theme of eschatology is presented as a central question for philosophy in the light of the hermeneutic articulation, proposed by Ricoeur, between archeology, teleology and eschatology. At the same time, while Ricoeur keeps the eschaton separate from any possibility of full understanding, the essay tries to see eschatology in the light of the full entrance of "salvation" into the dimension of finitude and history, and therefore in its character of adequate fulfillment of understanding

Eschatology and the Theory of Apocalypse

2019

This chapter centers on the role of myth-building and myths as the touchstone of culture and society. It deals with the idea that far from being silly stories, myths are a representational archetype that helps society to resolve practical problems or philosophical quandaries. Having said this, one might speculate that the scatology, which is understood as a tradition that narrates the end of the world, has occupied a central position in the industry of cultural entertainment. However, this obsession for the apocalypse theory seems to be proportionally indirect to the scientific studies in the field. This suggests not only the needs of discussing why the human will opposes the desires of God…

New Proposal on the Symbology of the Protohistoric Tray of El Gandul (Alcalá de Guadaira, Seville)

2018

Dicho mitem…

Eschatology and Time in the Gospel of John

2018

The article discusses the complex issue of time and eschatology in the Fourth Gospel. To get a grip on John’s eschatology it is necessary to take seriously John’s own use of language, and not to let the issue be determined solely by categories or terms (such as ‘eschatology’ and ‘apocalypticism’) introduced by scholars. It is essential to understand John’s eschatology as an aspect of the Gospel’s broader concept of time and the way in which this concept is given linguistic expression. This approach allows more recent, in particular narratological, methods to be applied to determine the Gospel’s concept of time. The article addresses the following topics: present and future eschatology in re…
