The aim of this article is to consider the power of school system based on Ivan Illich’s (1926 – 2002) thoughts. This article is based on a doctoral research in which Ivan Illich’s work on modernized poverty was analyzed systematically by an immanent reconstruction concentrating on his most essential books published in the 1970s. This article, however, focuses on his book Deschooling Society (1971), and represents systematic analysis of its school-related criticism. El absentismo escolar no recibe en España la atención que merece. Pese a que diversos estudios señalan que la ausencia de las aulas del alumnado en edad de escolarización obligatoria es más amplia de lo que parece ‒los informes PISA, por ejemplo, lo cuantifican entre el 25 y el 28 % del alumnado de 4º de la secundaria obligatoria‒ esta realidad presenta una escasa visibilidad educativa y social. The aim of this study was to examine the impact of the type of self-concept (academic and general) and extracurricular activities on academic performance among primary school students (N = 1708), and to determine the differences of this relationship in terms of gender. We used a cluster sampling stratified into two stages and gave standardized achievement tests and ad-hoc instrument designed for academic and general self-concept and extracurricular activities. The results showed that respondents who engaged in academic extracurricular activities such as language and computer performed better in all academic subjects. The importance of mathematical literacy in any scientific career is widely recognized. However, various studies report lack of numeracy and mathematical literacy in students from various countries. In the present work we present a detailed study of the mathematical literacy of Spanish undergraduate students of Biology enrolled in a Plant Physiology course. We have performed individual analyses of results obtained during the period 2000-2011, for questions in the examinations requiring and not requiring mathematical skills.
