Second study on the recurrence risk of isolated esophageal atresia with or without trachea-esophageal fistula among first-degree relatives: no eviden…
2013
BACKGROUND Esophageal atresia with/without trachea-esophageal fistula (EA/TEF) denotes a spectrum of severe congenital malformations. The aim of this systematic study was to determine both the recurrence risk for EA/TEF, and the risk for malformations of the VATER/VACTERL association spectrum, in first-degree relatives of patients with isolated EA/TEF. METHODS A total of 108 unrelated patients with isolated EA/TEF were included. These individuals had 410 first-degree relatives including 194 siblings. The presence of EA/TEF and malformations of the VATER/VACTERL association spectrum in relatives was systematically assessed. Data from the EUROCAT network were used for comparison. RESULTS None…
Assessment of various factors influencing esophageal pressure measurement
1980
Modified spleen stiffness measurement by transient elastography is associated with presence of large oesophageal varices in patients with compensated…
2013
To evaluate the accuracy of liver transient elastography (TE), spleen TE and other noninvasive tests (AAR, APRI score, platelet count, platelet/spleen ratio) in predicting the presence and the size of oesophageal varices in compensated hepatitis C virus (HCV) cirrhosis, we studied 112 consecutive patients with compensated HCV cirrhosis who underwent biochemical tests, gastrointestinal endoscopy, liver TE and spleen TE by Fibroscan(®) (Echosens, Paris, France) using a modified software version with a range between 1.5 and 150 kPa. Spleen TE was not reliable in 16 patients (14.3%). Among the 96 patients with a valid measurement (69.8% men, mean age: 63.2 ± 9.5 years), 43.7% had no oesophageal…
Mortality risk according to different clinical characteristics of first episode of liver decompensation in cirrhotic patients: a nationwide, prospect…
2013
Abstract OBJECTIVES: The occurrence of decompensation marks a crucial turning point in the course of cirrhosis. The purpose of this study was to assess the risk of mortality according to the clinical characteristics of first decompensation, considering also the impact of acute-on-chronic liver failure (AoCLF). METHODS: We conducted a prospective nationwide inception cohort study in Italy. Decompensation was defined by the presence of ascites, either overt or detected by ultrasonography (UD), gastroesophageal variceal bleeding (GEVB), and hepatic encephalopathy (HE). AoCLF was defined according to the Asian Pacific Association for the Study of the Liver criteria. Multivariable Cox proportion…
Predicting Mortality Risk in Patients With Compensated HCV-Induced Cirrhosis: A Long-Term Prospective Study
2009
OBJECTIVES: The identification of prognostic factors associated with mortality is crucial in any clinical setting. METHODS: We enrolled in a prospective study 352 patients with compensated hepatitis C virus (HCV)-induced cirrhosis, consecutively observed between 1989 and 1992. At entry, patients underwent upper endoscopy to detect esophageal varices, and were then surveilled by serial clinical and ultrasonographic examination. The model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) score was calculated with information collected at enrollment. Baseline predictors and intercurrent events associated with mortality were assessed using the Cox regression model. RESULTS: During a median follow-up of 14.4 y…
Diagnosis of pre-sarcopenia from a single selectional crosscut at C3 region, using CT scans before radiotherapy
2019
Laparoscopic treatment for esophageal achalasia: experience at a single center
2013
Background. Achalasia is a not frequent esophageal disorder cha- racterized by the absence of esophageal peristalsis and incomplete re- laxation of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). Its cause is unknown. The aim of treatment is to improve the symptoms. We report the results of the treatment of this condition achieved in one center. Patients and methods. We conducted a retrospective study of pa- tients with esophageal achalasia. In the period 2010-2012 we observed 64 patients, of whom 19 were referred for medical treatment. Three of Introduction Achalasia is a not frequent esophageal motor disor- der that affects both the body of the esophagus and the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). It…
Dental and periodontal lesions in patients with gastro-oesophageal reflux disease.
2003
Dental erosion has been considered an extraesophageal manifestation of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, but few reports have studied the relationship between this disease and other periodontal or dental lesions. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of dental and periodontal lesions in patients with gastro-oesophageal reflux disease.A total of 253 subjects were prospectively studied between April 1998 and May 2000. Two study groups were established: 181 patients with gastro-oesophageal reflux disease and 72 healthy volunteers. Clinical assessment, including body mass index and consumption of tobacco and alcohol, was performed in all subjects, as well as a dental and peri…
Detection of Strands in Native Aortic Valves by Transesophageal Echocardiography
1997
Prevalence and echocardiographic characteristics of strands on the leaflets of native aortic valves were examined. According to our data, the strands we found in 39% of patients are most likely Lambl's excrescences.
Absence of cardiovascular autonomic dysfunction and vagal pancreatic impairment in idiopathic achalasia of the oesophagus
2007
Abstract Extra-oesophageal autonomic dysfunction in idiopathic achalasia is not well documented, due to contradictory results reported. We aimed to study the cardiovascular and pancreatic autonomic function in patients with idiopathic achalasia. Thirty patients with idiopathic achalasia (16M/14F; 34.5 ± 10.8 years) and 30 healthy volunteers (13M/17F; 34.8 ± 10.7 years) were prospectively studied. Age >60 years and conditions affecting results of autonomic evaluation were excluded. Both groups underwent the sham feeding test and plasmatic levels of pancreatic polypeptide (PP) were determined by radioimmunoassay (basal, at 5, 10, 20 and 30 min). Cardiovascular parasympathetic (deep breathing…
