Quality-based assessment of camera navigation skills for laparoscopic fundoplication.

2020

Summary Laparoscopic fundoplication is considered the gold standard surgical procedure for the treatment of symptomatic hiatus hernia. Studies on surgical performance in minimally invasive hiatus hernia repair have neglected the role of the camera assistant so far. The current study was designed to assess the applicability of the structured assessment of laparoscopic assistance skills (SALAS) score to laparoscopic fundoplication as an advanced and commonly performed laparoscopic upper GI procedure. Randomly selected laparoscopic fundoplications (n = 20) at a single institute were evaluated. Four trained reviewers independently assigned SALAS scoring based on synchronized video and voice rec…

Acute onset of esophageal duplication cyst in adult. Case report.

2009

Esophageal duplication (ED) cyst is unusual congenital disorder of the foregut, accounting for 10% to 15% of duplications of all foregut cysts. We report a case of esophageal duplication with acute clinical presentation, treated successfully with surgical resection.46-year-old man with acute dysphagia and gastroesophageal reflux of 2 weeks duration, showed submucosal bulging mass in the posterior wall of the middle third of oesophagus, fluid-filled cystic structure, dyshomogeneous, low-attenuation mass with smooth borders compatible with an hemorrhagic esophageal duplication cyst. With the suspect of acute presentation of a complicated esophageal cyst, the patient underwent surgery by right…

A simple technique of oblique anastomosis can prevent stricture formation in primary repair of esophageal atresia

2012

Abstract Background Anastomotic stricture is an important problem after esophageal atresia (EA) repair. This study evaluates a technique of oblique esophageal anastomosis without use of a flap in order to prevent stricture formation. Methods Medical records of 16 patients (14 with EA type III and 2 with EA type IV Ladd-Gross classification) who underwent primary repair of EA at birth without anastomotic tension were reviewed, evaluating long-term follow-up results. All patients were studied with esophageal contrast study, pH-multichannel intraluminal impedance, and endoscopy. The incidence of complications and their management were analysed. Results Contrast esophagogram and esophagoscopy a…

Persistent and recurrent achalasia after Heller myotomy: analysis of different patterns and long-term results of reoperation.

2007

Hypothesis Two groups of patients with inadequate therapeutic success after surgical treatment for achalasia can be identified, patients with type 1 recurrence (early recurrence after technical failure of myotomy or a scarring process requiring remyotomy) and patients with type 2 recurrence (late recurrence with irreversible progression of the disease and development of megaesophagus requiring esophagectomy). Design Prospective study. Setting University-based tertiary care center. Patients One hundred sixty-three patients undergoing surgery for achalasia during 20.3 years. Interventions Conventional remyotomy for type 1 recurrence (group 1) and esophagectomy (transhiatal or transthoracic) f…
