Abstract Myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN) are traditionally regarded as a disease of older adults, though a not negligible fraction of cases occurs at a younger age, including women of childbearing potential. Our purpose was to evaluate neurovascular compression at the level of ventrolateral medulla and NVC with the IXth and the Xth cranial nerves in patients with essential hypertension and in healthy volunteers using high resoluted Spoiled Recalled Gradient Echo (SPGR) sequences, allowing the detection of stationary tissues and moving spins. Thirty patients (19 men and 11 women) with essential hypertension were examined. Patient's ages ranged from 24 to 64 years-old (mean age was 48 y.o.). Patients older than 65 were excluded. Standardized criteria of response to treatment and a unified definition of resistance/intolerance to hydroxycarbamide (HC) in essential thrombocythaemia (ET) have been proposed by the European LeukaemiaNet (ELN). We have retrospectively evaluated such criteria in 166 ET patients treated with HC for a median of 4·5 years. Overall, 134 patients achieved a complete clinicohaematological response (CR) and 25 a partial response. Thirty-three patients met at least one of the ELN criteria defining resistance (n = 15) or intolerance (n = 21) to HC. Leucine, isoleucine and valine, the branched-chain amino acids (BCAA), make up about one-third of muscle protein. Of these, leucine has been the most thoroughly investigated because its oxidation rate is higher than that of isoleucine or valine. Leucine also stimulates protein synthesis in muscle and is closely associated with the release of gluconeogenic precursors, such as alanine, from muscle. Significant decreases in plasma or serum levels of leucine occur following aerobic (11 to 33%), anaerobic lactic (5 to 8%) and strength exercise (30%) sessions.
