Bone marrow evaluation according to the PVSG and WHO criteria in 90 essential thrombocythemia (ET) patients treated with PEG interferon alpha-2b. Pre…

2005

Abstract Ninety ET patients diagnosed according to the PVSG criteria were enrolled in a phase II study (sponsored by the Schering-Plough Company) designed to evaluate the efficacy, safety and tolerability of a two years treatment with PEG Interferon alpha-2 b (PEG Intron). The patients, observed in 16 Italian Centres belonging to the GIMEMA Cooperative Group and judged at high risk, had been previously treated with cytoreductive (97%) and antiplatelet (91%) drugs. At the study start the patients, 60 F and 30 M, mean age 45 years, showed splenomegaly in 22% of cases. The Hematological Response (HR: PLT<500 x109/L) was observed in 64/81 (79%) and 48/55 (87%) of the patients on PEG Intr…

SHORT-TERM VARIABILITY OF 24H SYSTOLIC BLOOD PRESSURE IS ASSOCIATED WITH MICROALBUMINURIA IN PATIENTS WITH PRIMARY HYPERTENSION

2015

Objective: Limited and conflicting data are available about the association between shortterm blood pressure (BP) variability and urinary albumin excretion rate (uAER). The objective of our study was to analyze the relationships between microalbuminuria, defined as an uAER between 20 and 200mg/ min, and shortterm BP variability, assessed as average real variability (ARV), weighted standard deviation (SD) of 24h BP, and as SD of daytime and nighttime BP. Design and method: The study population consisted of 315 untreated essential hypertensives with normal estimated glomerular filtration rate (> 60ml/min/1.73 m2), which underwent 24h ambulatory BP monitoring and 24h uAER determination. Result…

Overcoming Essentialism? Students’ Reflections on Learning Intercultural Communication Online

2022

The fields of intercultural communication (IC) and intercultural education are in flux and the paradigmatic shift is away from essentialist approaches on culture and interculturality towards seeing IC and interculturality as flexible, fluid, contradictory, political, and ideological constructs. This study presents a virtual exchange project, a joint introductory course on IC between a Finnish university and a French university. One of the objectives of the course was to provide students with a more critical, non-essentialist perspective on interculturality. This study presents an analysis of 32 students’ texts (learning logs) that are processed qualitatively using content analysis to find a…

Medicinal and aromatic plants in agricultural research, when considering criteria of multifunctionality and sustainability

2022

Over the last twenty years, agriculture has witnessed significant changes in terms of energy requirements, advanced technologies and practices. This is in response to the impacts of crop production on the climate and environment and increasing awareness of the importance of agricultural sustainability through organic farming. Agriculture encompasses complex production systems and certain aspects of multifunctionality and sustainability have become fundamental for these systems. Agricultural activity can provide various functions in agro-ecosystems, such as producing food, managing natural resources, and conserving landscape and plant biodiversity; contributing to the cultural, historical an…

Anti-inflammatory properties of an aldehydes-enriched fraction of grapefruit essential oil

2023

Chronic inflammation is linked to the development of numerous diseases and is accompanied by increased cytokine secretion. Macrophages provide a first line of defense against pathogens that under inflammatory stimuli release pro-inflammatory cytokines. The essential oil (EO) fractions obtained from Citrus spp. rich in different compounds have gained the attention of both researchers and users during the last decades. In particular, grapefruit (Citrus paradisi) peel is rich in phenolics and flavonoids with several health benefits, including anti-inflammatory actions. Additionally, its EO consists of a large number of compounds such as monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, alcohols, aldehydes, esters…

Ferulago nodosa Subsp. geniculata (Guss.) Troia & Raimondo from Sicily (Italy): Isolation of Essential Oil and Evaluation of Its Bioactivity

2020

Ferulago nodosa (L.) Boiss. (Apiaceae) is a species occurring in the Balkan-Tyrrhenian area. The object of the present study is Sicilian F. nodosa subsp. geniculata (Guss.) Troia & Raimondo, classified as an endemic F. nodosa subspecies. Aerial parts of this plant species were subjected to hydrodistillation to obtain an essential oil. A total of 93 compounds were identified with 2,3,6-trimethyl benzaldehyde (19.0%), spathulenol (9.0%), (E)-caryophyllene (5.4%), and caryophyllene oxide (5.4%) as the main components. The biological activities of F. nodosa essential oil were also investigated. This oil showed an interesting antioxidant potential in a 2,2′-Azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sul…

Antioxidant activity of essential oils obtained from aerial part of some Lamiaceae species

2018

Introduction: Essential oils are the perspective source of natural antioxidants because some synthetic antioxidants are now suspected to be potentially harmful to human health. As free radicals can cause inflammatory diseases, cancer, atherosclerosis, and aging, antioxidants can inhibit oxidative chain reactions. Essential oils have a wide range of pharmacological effects as they are multicomponent mixtures of chemical compounds, mainly terpenoids and aromatic components. Materials and Methods: The antioxidant activity of essential oils obtained from aerial parts of Ocimum americanum, Lophanthus anisatus, Monarda fistulosa, and Satureja hortensis (Lamiaceae) has been evaluated spectrophotom…

The state of research on software engineering competencies: A systematic mapping study

2022

Considering the critical role of software in modern societies, we face an urgent need to educate more competent software professionals. Software engineering competencies (SEC) are considered the backbone of successfully developing software products. Consequently, SEC has become a hotspot for software engineering research and practice. Although scientific literature on SEC is not lacking, to our knowledge, a comprehensive overview of the current state of SEC research is missing. To that end, we conducted an extensive and systematic review of the SEC literature. We provide an overview of the current state of research on SEC, with a particular focus on common SEC research areas. In addition to…

Volatile oil content of Scots Pine needles (Pinus sylvestris L.)

2016

Badania dotyczą zmienności zawartości olejku eterycznego w igliwiu sosny zwyczajnej w zależności od wieku drzew, garnituru igieł oraz jego usytuowania w koronie. Materiał do badań stanowiło igliwie zebrane z drzewostanów sosnowych w wieku 15, 44 i 89 lat. W przeprowadzonych badaniach średnia zawartość olejków wzrastała wraz z wiekiem drzew. W igliwiu pochodzącym z 15-letniego młodnika zawartość olejku wynosiła średnio 0,46%, a w igliwiu drzewostanów 44- i 89-letnich odpowiednio 0,55 i 0,61%. Średnia zawartość olejku maleje wraz z wiekiem igliwia. Najwięcej olejku zawiera igliwie jednoroczne - 0,56%, najmniej igliwie trzyletnie - 0.48%. W drzewostanie 15-letnim stwierdzono wyraźny wzrost wyd…
