Effects of Different Glucose Concentrations on Spinal Anaesthesia with Bupivacaine and Tetracaine
1989
The effects of 5% and 8% glucose in 0.5% tetracaine or bupivacaine on the anaesthetic spread were investigated in 80 urological patients requiring spinal anaesthesia for trans-urethral resection of the prostate. The local anaesthetic solutions were randomly administered, the patients being divided into four groups of 20, and the anaesthetic profile was then evaluated in a double-blind fashion by an independent observer. Maximum cephalad spread of analgesia was significantly greater with tetracaine in 8% glucose compared to the other three groups (tetracaine/5% glucose, bupivacaine/5 or 8% glucose) (P less than 0.05). Glucose concentration significantly influenced spreading characteristics o…

Catheters in Regional Anesthesia
2014
Anesthesiologists use different types of catheters in the performance of continuous regional anesthetic techniques such as epidural, subarachnoid, and paravertebral blocks, as well as peripheral nerve blocks.
Evaluation of the effect of home bleaching agents on surface microhardness of different glass-ionomer cements containing hydroxyapatite
2017
Background Home bleaching agents may exert some negative effects on surface hardness of restorative materials such as glass-ionomer cements (GICs). Since some studies have shown that some components such as hydroxyapatite (HA), as a bioactive glass, can improve the mechanical properties of dental materials, the effect of bleaching agents on surface hardness of GICs containing hydroxyapatite is questionable. This study was designed to evaluate the effect of home bleaching agents on the surface hardness of two different commercially available GICs containing hydroxyapatite. Material and methods 80 disk-shaped specimens were made from two different GICs, including resin modified glass-ionomer …
Influence of thickness and translucency of lithium disilicate ceramic on degree of conversion of resinous materials
2020
Background In this study was assessed the degree of conversion (DC) of amine-free resin cements light cured through lithium disilicate-reinforced ceramics at different thicknesses and translucency. Material and Methods Specimens were divided into 21 groups (n = 5) according to luting agent used: Variolink Esthetic LC (Light shade), RelyX Ultimate (A1 shade), and Filtek Z350 XT Flow (A1 shade); the ceramic translucency: low (LT) and high (HT); and the ceramic thickness: no ceramic (control), 0.5 mm, 1 mm, and 2 mm. A Teflon mold with (5 x 5 x 0.5 mm) was used to standardize the cement and over it the ceramic block from each group was placed. Set was cured using a polywave LED light (1200 mW/…
Anaesthetic-related neuroprotection: intravenous or inhalational agents?
2010
In designing the anaesthetic plan for patients undergoing surgery, the choice of anaesthetic agent may often appear irrelevant and the best results obtained by the use of a technique or a drug with which the anaesthesia care provider is familiar. Nevertheless, in those surgical procedures (cardiopulmonary bypass, carotid surgery and cerebral aneurysm surgery) and clinical situations (subarachnoid haemorrhage, stroke, brain trauma and postcardiac arrest resuscitation) where protecting the CNS is a priority, the choice of anaesthetic drug assumes a fundamental role. Treating patients with a neuroprotective agent may be a consideration in improving overall neurological outcome. Therefore, a cl…
Wearing complete dental prostheses - Effects on perioral morphology.
2015
Background: To adequately perform rehabilitation of edentulous patients by a complete removable dental prosthesis (CRDP) is from basic interest to dentists to understand the morphologic changes caused by re-establishment of a physiologic jaw relationship. Anthropometric analyses of standardized frontal view and profile photographs may help elucidate such changes. Material and Methods: Photographs of 31 edentulous patients were compared in relaxed lip closure and after insertion of a CRDP in stable occlusion. 2232 anthropometric distances were raised. Eighteen anthropometric indices reflecting the perioral morphology and its integration in the vertical facial harmony were investigated. Resul…
A Metaphor for Identities in Transition through Urbanization and Globalization: Tofu and One Hundred Surnames
2019
The Chinese artist Chen Qiulin has been taking displacement and the resulting unrest in people’s identity as her persistent theme since the early 1990s. Focusing on a series of her works made since 2004 dealing explicitly with tofu and Chinese surnames, this paper examines her exploration of identities in transition in the context of China’s mass urbanization and globalization. By showing the artist’s conceptual evolution, her preference for materials and mediums, and her exhibition strategy, this paper explores two issues. First, it illuminates how the artist has transformed “tofu” and “surname” into a metaphor for the dilemma of identity under the urbanization in China. Second, it discuss…
