A comparative study of the performance of acetonitrile and methanol in the multi-linear gradient separation of proteic primary amino acids
2006
The performance of the separation of proteic primary amino acids using multi-linear gradients of acetonitrile and methanol was studied under an experimental-design basis, using an Inertsil ODS-3 column and pre-column derivatization with o-phthaldialdehyde (OPA) and N-acetyl-l-cysteine (NAC). Elution strength, peak properties, resolution, and analysis time, were examined. The optimal separation was established through modeling, using information obtained from isocratic data. By optimizing the separation with gradients of increasing complexity, acceptable resolution was possible, being glycine/threonine the critical pair. Multi-criteria decision-making (Derringer desirabilities) was applied t…
Interpretive optimisation strategy applied to the isocratic separation of phenols by reversed-phase liquid chromatography with acetonitrile–water and…
2000
An optimisation protocol is presented for the resolution of complex mixtures in isocratic RPLC with binary mobile phases of organic solvent and water, which is based on the prediction of peak position and shape of the individual compounds. A good description of the retention was achieved through the application of statistical weights to the widely used linear or quadratic relationships between the logarithm of the retention factor (log k) and the organic solvent concentration in the mobile phase. The maximisation of the product of peak purities for each compound is shown as a competitive resolution strategy versus the worst value of a selectivity parameter. Peak purities allow one to associ…
Peak half-width plots to study the effect of organic solvents on the peak performance of basic drugs in micellar liquid chromatography.
2009
The addition of the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) to hydro-organic mixtures of methanol, ethanol, propanol or acetonitrile with water yielded enhanced peak shape (i.e. increased efficiencies and symmetrical peaks) for a group of basic drugs (β-blockers) chromatographed with a Kromasil C18 column. The effect can be explained by the thin layer of surfactant associated to the hydrocarbon chain on the stationary phase in the presence of the organic solvents, which covers the free silanols on the siliceous support avoiding their interaction with the cationic basic drugs. These instead interact with the anionic head of the surfactant increasing their retention and allowing a mo…
Reversed phase liquid chromatography for the enantioseparation of local anaesthetics in polysaccharide-based stationary phases. Application to biodeg…
2020
[EN] A comprehensive study on the chiral separation of bupivacaine, mepivacaine, prilocaine and propanocaine with eight commercial polysaccharide-based chiral stationary phases (CSPs) in reversed phase conditions compatible with MS detection is performed. Methanol and acetonitrile are used as organic modifiers. Retention and resolution values obtained for each compound in the different CSPs and mobile phases are compared. The polysaccharide-based CSPs tested present different enantioselectivity towards the analytes. From the results, the experimental conditions for determining the enantiomers of bupivacaine, mepivacaine, prilocaine and propanocaine in saline aqueous samples using MS detecti…
Nano-magnetic potassium impregnated ceria as catalyst for the biodiesel production
2019
Abstract The main objective of this work comprises the investigation of biodiesel production from rapeseed oil using potassium impregnated Fe3O4-CeO2 nanocatalyst. The various concentration of potassium impregnated Fe3O4-CeO2 was screened for catalytic conversion of rapeseed oil to triglyceride methyl ester. The 25 wt % potassium impregnated Fe3O4-CeO2 nanocatalyst showed best biodiesel production. Nanocatalyst was characterized by FTIR, XRD, SEM, TEM, BET and Hammett indicator for basicity test. The characterization of biodiesel was performed with GC-MS, 1H and 13C NMR. Moreover, the optimum reaction parameters such as catalyst amount (wt %), oil to methanol ratio, reaction time and reacti…
Modeling the anaerobic treatment of sulfate rich urban wastewater. Application to AnMBR technology
2020
[EN] Although anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AnMBR) are a core technology in the transition of urban wastewater (UWW) treatment towards a circular economy, the transition is being held back by a number of bottlenecks. The dissolved methane released from the effluent, the need to remove nutrients (ideally by recovery), or the energy lost by the competition between methanogenic and sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) for the biodegradable COD have been identified as the main issues to be addressed before AnMBR becomes widespread. Mathematical modeling of this technology can be used to obtain further insights into these bottlenecks plus other valuable information for design, simulation and contro…
Modeling solid waste decomposition.
2004
The hydrolysis rate coefficients of sorted municipal waste were evaluated from the biochemical methane potential tests using non-linear regression. A distributed mathematical model of anaerobic digestion of rich (food) and lean (non-food) solid wastes with greatly different rates of polymer hydrolysis/acidogenesis was developed to describe the balance between the rates of hydrolysis/acidogenesis and methanogenesis. The model was calibrated using previously published experimental data [Biores. Technol. 52 (1995) 245] obtained upon various initial food waste loadings. Simulations of one- and two-stage digestion systems were carried out. The results showed that initial spatial separation of fo…
Phase equilibria involved in extractive distillation of dipropyl ether+1-propyl alcohol using 2-ethoxyethanol as entrainer
2007
Abstract Consistent vapour–liquid equilibrium data at 101.3 kPa have been determined for the ternary system dipropyl ether + 1-propyl alcohol + 2-ethoxyethanol and two constituent binary systems: dipropyl ether + 2-ethoxyethanol and 1-propyl alcohol + 2-ethoxyethanol. The dipropyl ether + 2-ethoxyethanol system shows positive deviations from ideal behaviour and 1-propyl alcohol + 2-ethoxyethanol system exhibits no deviation from ideal behaviour. The activity coefficients and the boiling points were correlated with their compositions by the Wilson, NRTL and UNIQUAC equations. It is shown that the models allow a very good prediction of the phase equilibria of the ternary system using the pert…
Type-2 Fuzzy Control of a Bioreactor
2009
Abstract—In this paper the control of a bioprocess using an adaptive type-2 fuzzy logic controller is proposed. The process is concerned with the aerobic alcoholic fermentation for the growth of Saccharomyces Cerevisiae a n d i s characterized by nonlinearity and parameter uncertainty. Three type-2 fuzzy controllers heve been developed and tested by simulation: a simple type-2 fuzzy logic controller with 49 rules; a type-2 fuzzyneuro- predictive controller (T2FNPC); a t y p e -2 selftuning fuzzy controller ( T2STFC). The T2FNPC combines the capability of the type-2 fuzzy logic to handle uncertainties, with the ability of predictive control to predict future plant performance making use of a…
Neuroimmune Activation and Myelin Changes in Adolescent Rats Exposed to High-Dose Alcohol and Associated Cognitive Dysfunction: A Review with Referen…
2014
Aims: The aim of the study was to assess whether intermittent ethanol administration to adolescent rats activates innate immune response and TLRs signalling causing myelin disruption and long-term cognitive and behavioural deficits. Methods: We used a rat model of intermittent binge-like ethanol exposure during adolescence. Results: Binge-like ethanol administration to adolescent rats increased the gene expression of TLR4 and TLR2 in the prefrontal cortex (PFC), as well as inflammatory cytokines TNF alpha and IL-1 beta. Up-regulation of TLRs and inflammatory mediators were linked with alterations in the levels of several myelin proteins in the PFC of adolescent rats. These events were assoc…
