AbstractTowards the end of the editing process, we started to see the book as something more than a collection of chapters around a theme: as an assemblage, which included, of course, the community of authors. When we put out the first call for contributions in May 2018, most authors volunteered a contribution rather quickly, others joined a bit later, and some dropped out for different reasons, underlining the dynamic nature of our assemblage. The aim of this research is to analyze Kevin J. Vanhoozer’s theory of creative action as a hermeneutical viewpoint in the light of learning and ethical development. The method used in this research is systematic analysis. Vanhoozer’s understanding of action differs strongly from that of Marx and of Dewey. By turning to philosophical hermeneutics he finds a way through Aristotle’s drama theory where creative action is a basis for the Gadamerian horizon, but instead of fusing the horizons Vanhoozer sees it as the viewpoint of Bakhtinian outsider, which in turn provides an opportunity to critique the surrounding culture. This study increases knowledge and understanding of middle managers’ ethical decision-making and behaviour within the context of Finnish higher education. The aim of the research is to develop a new framework for ethical decision-making and behaviour by combining prior theories and empirical knowledge. This dissertation consists of an introductory essay and three articles. The main argument of this research is that through organisations’ socialisation processes, middle managers adopt socially defined managerial roles, which affect their ethical decision-making and ethical conduct. The paper examines the education and training of adults in ethics. It applies to courses at universities and colleges as well as in the work place. The paper explores the evidence on our ability to strengthen moral behaviour through courses on ethics, finds it to be weak, so starts with the assumption that we cannot teach people to be ethical.
