Umowa czy harmonia społeczna

2017

There are some well-known critiques of social contract undertaken from the traditionalist, communitarian and Marxist perspectives. This article suggests a different, rationalist approach: the return to classical rationality. I show that the idea of the social contract has its basis in the mistaken modern assertions concerning human nature, identifying human beings as individuals moved by desires and the will to power, and the phenomenon of life as an endless conflict. I argue that cooperation is essential to human life. It is cooperation and the presence of ethics in the public and private spheres that makes us fully human and civilized beings. The community organized according to the requi…

The role of controversy in engineering design

1997

Abstract To ensure the acceptance of technical systems and products in society, the crucial role of social controversy in technology development has to be more openly recognized. Many of the current acceptance problems of technical systems developed because the social controversy generated by the system under design was not sufficiently taken into account. Actively managed and organized controversy, on the other hand, could become an integral part of the engineering design process and the basis for a new underlying philosophy of design. Technical design in companies and technological organizations could be opened up to the active involvement of social actors usually excluded from it (like t…

The otherness of social work under neoliberal governance

2013

This special issue examines the topic of ‘understanding the Other’ from a very different perspective of ‘Otherness’, which advocates that the own Otherness of social work be reflected on as well. In the contexts of many current societies, social work itself increasingly appears as a strange element – an exceptional idea – as ‘the Other’. Moreover, a question raises over whether social work itself is understandable to those who are outside of it. In this paper, social work is distinguished at three institutional levels: as a science, as a profession and as an ideology or social movement. The paper aims at analysing how social work itself is put into the position of ‘the Other’ in the current…

Awareness and knowledge of cyberethics : a study of pre-service teachers in Malta, Norway, and Spain

2021

This paper explores the awareness and knowledge of cyberethics held by pre-service teachers across three European countries. The study was conducted via an online survey and yielded 1,131 responses from pre-service teachers in Malta, Norway, and Spain. The facets of cyberethics included in this study focused on behaving responsibly online, safeguarding privacy, respecting copyright, seeking consent of friends before posting images or videos on social media platforms, and considering their professional identity as future teachers when posting online. The findings indicate that pre-service teachers reported relatively similar levels of competence in applying copyright and respecting privacy r…

Education and Social Structure

2015

In this chapter Education and Social Structure, Jon P. Knudsen argues that the role and effect of education is strongly integrated with social and cultural structures. In order to understand how education works, one has to understand how it interrelates with the norms and structure of the cultural environment it plays into. The chapter calls for a balanced development strategy, where new initiatives are discussed in relation to the social and historical environment it is part of. The focus moves from the university to the region. Of course we cannot assume that all universities are seen as part of regions. Some draw on students and subject matter from a wider world. However, even the region…

Aproximaciones Psicosociales a la Corrupción: Una Revisión Teórica

2017

Corruption is widespread in current societies; despite its social relevance, it has been studied mostly from economic perspectives. The article reviews and critically analyzes corruption from different social psychology approaches, both in the Anglophone and Latin American settings. Regarding the former, the article highlights the influence of peer behaviors and social norms, risk perceptions, the role of emotions, behavioral ethics and the relationship of corruption to power Regarding the latter, the Latin American models focus on the influence of supra-individual structures such as ethical values and institutions on the individual’s conduct. It is proposed that research on this topic look…

You are not alone – Social sharing as a necessary addition to the Embracing factor

2017

AbstractI argue that the Embracing factor cannot be adequately conceptualized without taking into account the regulatory power of the social sharing of emotions. Humans tend to share their negative emotions with close others, and they benefit from it. I outline how this mechanism works in art reception by regulating and transforming negative emotions into positive experiences.

Social Work in Germany. Developments in a professional field and academic discipline

2019

In many countries of the Global North, social work developed as an independent profession and discipline in the 20th century. One of the countries in which social work became established as a professional field was Germany. This field's origins go back to the “social question”. The articles in this volume deal with current social work issues, offering an insight into the current state of discussion on each topic in Germany. They all draw attention to the complex interplay between local social work and the field’s expansion beyond individual places and national states, and the interconnections between national societal developments in Germany and those on an international, global level.
