Education and the Demand for Emancipation
2014
This paper puts forward the hypothesis that in recent decades, pupils of schools in the western world have been given a new form of individuality. This construction has been nourished by both the demand for emancipation as it was expressed in the critical sociology of education (and pedagogy) and by the neoliberal turn in education policy. It unfolds consequences of such an alliance between romantic and neoliberal individualism, and argues that some of Simmel's concepts might fruitfully be engaged to grasp important aspects of today's educational culture. Against this backdrop, the paper discusses the construction of the new individuality in regard to educational changes in control and disc…
Crossing frontiers in biomaterials and regenerative medicine
2008
From 28 May–1 June 2008, the 8th World Biomaterials Congress (WBC) was held in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The meeting attracted 3052 participants from 82 countries, which has made this congress the largest meeting ever held in the field of biomaterials and regenerative medicine. More than 650 oral and 1500 poster contributions [1] were presented in 108 scientific sessions, divided into nine parallel sessions, including 48 dedicated symposia that had been proposed by international leaders in the field. The symposia each contained an invited keynote, providing expert opinions on current developments in biomaterials research. Historically, research in the field of biomaterials has focused on …
Strategic cyber threat intelligence : Building the situational picture with emerging technologies
2020
In 2019, e-criminals adopted new tactics to demand enormous ransoms from large organizations by using ransomware, a phenomenon known as “big game hunting.” Big game hunting is an excellent example of a sophisticated and coordinated modern cyber-attack that has a significant impact on the target. Cyber threat intelligence (CTI) increases the possibilities to detect and prevent cyber-attacks and gives defenders more time to act. CTI is a combination of incident response and traditional intelligence. Intelligence modifies raw data into information for decision-making and action. CTI consists of strategic, operational, or tactical intelligence on cyber threats. Security event monitoring, event-…

WORK-BASED STUDIES IN HIGHER PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION OF LATVIA AND EUROPE: THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL ASPECTS
2021
Work-based learning has been developing rapidly in Latvia for the last three years. Since 2017, the Employers’ Confederation of Latvia has been implementing a project of the European Social Fund, which provides for a tripartite learning implementation agreement between the educational institution, the student, and the employer. The project targets vocational learners, but equivalent opportunities are also spoken of in higher vocational education. Such an approach would help the employer direct the future employees in the direction of acquiring the necessary knowledge and skills. The publication aims to give a short overview of the historical development of learning opportunities in the work…

SYSTEMOLOGY AND ONTODIDACTICS FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF MODERN GENERAL EDUCATION
2006
Dear colleagues! Due to serious global and local changes in our modern economical and political life o n t o d i d a c t i c s has established itself as the theory of qualitative changes in modern education. Traditional didactics, following principle of moving from simple to complex, today must be supplemented with ontodidactics, following the principle of transition from complex to simple. It means the step to higher level of generalization when starting new stage of education (like upper secondary after lower secondary education) or starting development of qualitatively new structure of educational content to respond demands from our qualitatively changing lifestyle.
Legal science between natural and human sciences
1984
In this paper I will offer some methodological reflections on legal science and its relations with the natural and human sciences. The first part of the paper (sections 2-4) deals with the relation between legal science and the natural sciences. The thesis I put forward is drawn from my book Teorie della scienza giuridica e teorie delle scienee naturali. Modelli e analogie, and restates the main points of my argument there against approaches founded on neopositivism and in favour of a post-positivist approach. The second part (sections 5-7) deals with some aspects of the relations between legal and human sciences, and develops some rather more tentative ideas which go beyond the conclusions…
Climate Change Education in the Curricula of Technical and Classical Universities
2010
Climate change education is becoming an integral part of the education in study programs at universities in Latvia offering environmental education study programs. In this article, a comparison of approaches of climate change education in classical (University of Latvia) and technical (Riga Technical University) are discussed. Requirements of the labour market are the key factors influencing study content and study methods. Therefore, consultations with major stakeholders and with academics involved in environmental education (e.g. the Council of Environmental Education and Science), may be some of the main tools to implement new concepts.
