Lo verosímil en la ética de Aristóteles: una aporía en el vocabulario filosófico griego

2007

While the mainstream of modern moral philosophy has always assumed that the characteristic situation in moral judgments should be the certitude, Aristotle’s moral philosophy is dominated by the idea of verisimilitude. As a matter of fact, its main concept, namely «virtue», is doubly permeated by this idea, both in its psychological and epistemological sides: we cannot know with certitude (only with verisimilitude) what is entailed by the adscription of a virtue (e.g. generosity), both generally and in a particular case. Nevertheless, verisimilitude is a good enough ground for action.

Mientras que la corriente principal de la filosofía moral moderna da por supuesto que la …

Biotechnology, Ethics, and Society: The Case of Genetic Manipulation

2015

Biotechnologies are transforming human existence and their potential ever increasing. The discovery of the DNA double helix in 1953 paved the way for genetic medicine and even the possibility to alter the genetic makeup of human beings. Since then, the capacity of the human being to learn about and intervene in his own biological makeup has not ceased to grow.

DNA Commission of the International Society of Forensic Genetics: recommendations on forensic analysis using Y-chromosome short tandem repeats

2001

Abstract During the past few years the DNA commission of the International Society of Forensic Genetics has published a series of documents providing guidelines and recommendations concerning the application of DNA polymorphisms to the problems of human identification. This latest report addresses a relatively new area, namely Y-chromosome polymorphisms, with particular emphasis on short tandem repeats (STRs). This report addresses nomenclature, use of allelic ladders, population genetics and reporting methods.

Factors in Assessing Recidivism Risk in Young Offenders

2020

The research aims to identify if the accumulation of protective and/or risk factors might predict the risk of recidivism in juvenile delinquents and determine the relative weight of both types of factors in the predictions themselves. The risk of criminal recidivism was assessed with the Structured Assessment of Violence Risk in Youth&mdash

Geotourism product interpretation Rangitoto Island, Auckland, New Zealand

2010

Rangitoto Island, an island of volcanic origin, is a unique geotourism attraction and landmark of Auckland, New Zealand, capturing the attention of tourists since 1890. The island’s symmetrical cone and lava slopes rise gradually from the sea, making the shield volcano an iconic landmark for Auckland residents and a popular urban recreation area for domestic and international visitors. This chapter focuses on the effectiveness of different types of interpretive media (e.g. information signs and guided tours) as educative tools for geotourism which occurs in an urban context. It is based on a study which investigated which media were used most, how much visitors learned from them and whether…

The Royal Nation in Global Perspective

2017

Adopting transnational and global history methodologies, this book suggests that the relationship between monarchies and nation-state formation has often been a symbiotic one, and that this can only be adequately explained through a global perspective, going beyond the local histories of particular state systems. While the nation-state has been the most influential concept of political community in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, royal dynasties have, however, often provided a centralized administrative-juridical-cultural locus around which a national community has crystallized itself. Monarchic rulerships have played a central role in the emergence of modern nation-states, which fo…
