Objectively recorded physical activity in pregnancy and postpartum in a multi-ethnic cohort: association with access to recreational areas in the nei…

2015

Background Physical activity may reduce the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes; however, compared to non-pregnant women, a lower proportion of pregnant women meet the physical activity guidelines. Our objectives were to explore overall changes and ethnic differences in objectively recorded moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity (MVPA) during pregnancy and postpartum and to investigate the associations with objective and perceived access to recreational areas. Methods We analysed 1,467 person-observations from 709 women in a multi-ethnic population-based cohort, with MVPA data recorded with the SenseWear™ Pro3 Armband in early pregnancy (mean gestational week (GW) 15), mid-pregnanc…

Differences in dyslipidemia between American and Italian women with polycystic ovary syndrome.

2008

Abstract BACKGROUND: Dyslipidemia is a common metabolic complication in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). The aim of this study was to determine if differences exist in dyslipidemia in women with PCOS from different ethnic and geographical backgrounds. METHODS: This retrospective study evaluated the serum fasting lipid profiles of 106 women with PCOS from the United States and 108 women with PCOS from Italy evaluated at endocrinology clinics. RESULTS: American women had higher mean body mass index than Italian women (36.1+/-8.6 vs 28.1+/-5.8 kg/m2, p<0.01). Low HDL-cholesterol was the most prevalent lipid abnormality in both populations. U.S. women had higher mean levels of serum total chol…

AbstractBackgroundThe value of the nosological distinction between non-affective and affective psychosis has frequently been challenged. We aimed to investigate the transdiagnostic dimensional structure and associated characteristics of psychopathology at First Episode Psychosis (FEP). Regardless of diagnostic categories, we expected that positive symptoms occurred more frequently in ethnic minority groups and in more densely populated environments, and that negative symptoms were associated with indices of neurodevelopmental impairment.MethodThis study included 2182 FEP individuals recruited across six countries, as part of the EUropean network of national schizophrenia networks studying G…

Creencias religiosas versus gestión del patrimonio arqueológico: el Caso del cementerio Judío de Valencia

2001

Archaeological heritage ownership is a controversial subject under the influence of both ethnic and religious claims. In 1996, a group of Jewish communities finally were able to interrupt the archaeological excavation under way at the medieval Jewish cemetery of Valencia. In this manner they did not allow the anthropological analysis of human remains recovered at the site that were reburied at the Jewish cemetery of Barcelona. Both administrations, local and regional, prioritized religious claims of the communities involved with respect to the archaeological heritage. As a consequence of a complaint filed by a group of citizens, the Sindic of Greuges of the Valencian Community (regional omb…

“Two Schools under one Roof” in Bosnia and Herzegovina: Exploring the challenges of group identity and deliberative values among Bosniak and Croat st…

2014

Abstract The purpose of this study was to explore the challenge of engaging Bosniak and Croat students in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) in deliberative democracy within the context “two schools under one roof,” students receiving education in the same school building, yet attending separate classes and following distinct curricula. Findings suggest that group identity for Bosniak students was strongly tied to “being Bosnian” while Croat students expressed ambivalence and unease about their identity, balancing feelings between having their home in BiH and maintaining their Croat roots. The students’ relationships were complicated by an imbalance in perceptions of power, discriminatory attitud…

Childhood cancer incidence patterns by race, sex and age for 2000-2006: A report from the South African National Cancer Registry

2014

Higher childhood cancer incidence rates are generally reported for high income countries although high quality information on descriptive patterns of childhood cancer incidence for low or middle income countries is limited, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa. There is a need to quantify global differences by cancer types, and to investigate whether they reflect true incidence differences or can be attributed to under-diagnosis or under-reporting. For the first time, we describe childhood cancer data reported to the pathology report-based National Cancer Registry of South Africa in 2000-2006 and compare our results to incidence data from Germany, a high income country. The overall age-standa…

Discrimination in the sharing economy: evidence from a Hungarian field experiment

2018

Findings from our pilot research project which focused on providing car sharing services to young people with different ethnic/racial background showed discrimination against certain ethnic groups. The research was based on a controlled field experimental design to examine the chances of rides being offered to racially different testers. The experimental variables were both race and gender. Creating altogether 8 profiles enabled us to test the interaction between these two experimental stimulus. The small-scale research (total N=160) was implemented in Hungary, in summer 2017 by interns of TARKI, Hungarian Social Research Centre. The forthcoming article shows evidence of ethnic/racial dispr…

New Arrivals, Old Places: Demographic Changes and New Planning Challenges in Palermo and Naples

2008

If we look at the demographic changes in the largest cities in Southern Italy, the most significant trend is a balance between population growth and decline, affecting in particular inner urban areas, which is due to the predominance of new ethnic inhabitants. After having described these demographic changes in Naples and Palermo, the paper will include some considerations on the ‘institutional’ landscape of planning and the related policies. How do planning policies and practices face this quick change in such peripheral contexts, which are new to the phenomenon? Can the plural composition of the local society be viewed as an opportunity, and not just as a threat? The paper will use some a…
