Investigation of Polyol Adsorption on Ru, Pd, and Re Using vdW Density Functionals

2015

Biomass-based feedstocks are often oxygenated compounds characterized by large amounts of hydroxyls. As an example, polyols and sugar alcohols are largely employed as reactants for different chemical catalytic transformations such as oxidation, dehydration, and hydrodeoxigenation, which usually occur in aqueous medium. With the goal of gaining new insights into processes that could be industrially relevant, the adsorption of the OH groups on metal surfaces and in the presence of water has to be correctly reproduced and described, within a chosen theoretical framework. Toward this goal, several tests were performed on the catalytically relevant metal Ru, Pd, and Re, benchmarking their bulk a…

Blockcopolymere aus 2-Isopropenylnaphthalin und Hexamethylcyclotrisiloxan, 7

1985

Anionic polymerization of 2-isopropenylnaphthalene (2-IPN), with butyllithium in THF at −78°C was terminated with ethylene oxide and the resulting terminal alkoxide was used to initiate the polymerization of hexamethylcyclotrisiloxane (D3) at +40°C. This led to the formation of AB-block copolymers which were coupled to ABBA-block copolymers by addition of dichlorodimethylsilane. ABBA-blockcopolymers were obtained with contents of polymethylsiloxane (poly(DMS)) between 77 and 84% of weight and block molecular weights between 1 700 and 27 000 (poly(2-IPN)) and 13 000 and 240 000 (poly(DMS)). Phase separation in polymer films casted from different solvents was studied by electron microscopy an…

Rheological Behaviour, Mechanical Properties and Processability of Biodegradable Polymer Systems for Film Blowing

2017

Films for agricultural or packaging applications are typically made of low density polyethylene (LDPE). They are produced through the film blowing process, which requires the use of polymers with suitable rheological properties. Furthermore, the short shelf-life which is often related to many packed products leads to huge amounts of plastic-based wastes. This suggests the use of biodegradable and/or compostable polymers in replacement for traditional ones. To this regard, only few data exist on the rheological properties of biodegradable polymers undergoing film blowing processing. In this work, a detailed investigation on the rheological, mechanical and processability behaviour of some bio…

Vapor-phase testing of the memory-effects in benzene- and toluene-imprinted polymers conditioned at elevated temperature.

2013

Abstract The preparation of polymers imprinted with common aromatic solvents such as benzene and toluene is an under-exploited subject of research. The present study was aimed at the understanding of whether true solvent memory effects can be achieved by molecular imprinting, as well as if they are stable at elevated temperature. A set of copolymers, comprising low and high cross-linking levels, was prepared from four different combinations of functional monomer and cross-linker, namely methacrylic acid (MAA)/ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA), methyl methacrylate (MMA)/EGDMA, MAA/divinyl benzene (DVB) and MMA/DVB. Each possible combination was prepared separately in benzene, toluene an…

Efficiency Boosting of Surfactants with Poly(ethylene oxide)-Poly(alkyl glycidyl ether)s: A New Class of Amphiphilic Polymers

2020

Twenty years ago, it was found that adding small amounts of amphiphilic block copolymers like poly(ethylene propylene)-co-poly(ethylene oxide) (PEP-b-PEO) to microemulsion systems strongly increases the efficiency of medium-chain surfactants to solubilize water and oil. Although being predestined to serve as a milestone in microemulsion research, the effect has only scarcely found its way into applications. In this work, we propose new types of efficiency boosters, namely, poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(alkyl glycidyl ether carbonate)s (PEO-b-PAlkGE) and their "carbonated" poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(carbonate alkyl glycidyl ether) analogs. Their synthesis via anionic ring-opening polymerization (…

Micropolarity and Order in the Reverse Micelles of L62 and L64 Pluronic Copolymers, As Studied by Molecular Probe Techniques

1998

The reverse micelles of triblock copolymers poly(ethylene oxide)-block-poly(propylene oxide)-block-poly(ethylene oxide) EO6PO36EO6 (Pluronic L62) and EO13PO30EO13 (Pluronic L64) in ternary (copolymer/o-xylene/water) and binary (copolymer/water) systems with different water contents were evidenced and investigated by fluorescence, absorption, and spin probe techniques. The spectral parameters of the polarity sensitive probes, 1-anilinonaphthalene-8-sulfonic acid (ANS), dansylhexadecylamine (Dansyl), pyrenesulfonic acid (PSA), 4-nitropyridine N-oxide (NP) and 4-(N,N‘-dimethyl-N-alkyl)ammonium 2,2‘,6,6‘-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl iodide (CAT n), were related to the local hydration and polari…

2-Chloro/phenyl-7-arylimino-6,6-dimethylcyclopenta[b]pyridylnickel chlorides: Synthesis, characterization and ethylene oligomerization

2017

Abstract 2-Chloro/phenyl-7-arylimino-6,6-dimethylcyclopenta[b]pyridylnickel chlorides (Ni1–Ni8) were synthesized from the respective ligands L1–L8 and characterized. Upon activation with either methylaluminoxane (MAO) or ethylaluminium sesquichloride (EASC), they show high catalytic activity of up to 10.84 × 106 g(oligomer) mol− 1(Ni) h− 1 in ethylene oligomerization. The products range from butenes to dodecenes for Ni1–Ni4, but are limited to butenes and hexenes in the case of Ni5–Ni8. DFT calculations indicate that the Ni C bond length in the model alkyl complexes depends both on the nature of the substituents at the heterocycles and the kind of the alkyl group, shedding some light on the…

Synthesis and catalytic studies of Ti-anchored disilanol isobutyl-POSS/alkylaluminum system

2012

Abstract Titanium (IV) precursors anchored to alkyl substituted polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) disilanol were prepared and characterized. These catalysts formulated as [Ti(O^O)2] and [M(O^O)XCl] are found to be active in polymerization of ethylene at high temperatures in combination with ethylaluminum sesquichloride (Et3Al2Cl3) as co-catalyst. The polyethylene product so obtained is linear, crystalline and displays narrow dispersities. The unique low molecular weight PE formed in this reaction exhibit properties that have potential industrial applications. The effect of various reaction parameters on catalyst performance is described.

A molecular electron density theory study of the participation of tetrazines in aza-Diels–Alder reactions

2020

The reactions of eight tetrazines of increased electrophilic character with nucleophilic tetramethyl ethylene (TME) and with electrophilic tetracyanoethylene (TCE) have been studied using Molecular Electron Density Theory. These reactions are domino processes comprising an aza-Diels–Alder (ADA) reaction followed by an extrusion of molecular nitrogen, yielding a dihydropyridazine. Analysis of the conceptual DFT (CDFT) indices showed an increase of the electrophilicity and a decrease of the nucleophilicity of tetrazines with an increase of the electron-withdrawing character of the substituent. A very good correlation between the global electron density transfer at the transition structu…

A nitric oxide induced “click” reaction to trigger the aggregation induced emission (AIE) phenomena of a tetraphenyl ethylene derivative: A new fluor…

2020

Abstract An Aggregation Induced Emission (AIE) transduction mechanism has been used to detect nitric oxide (NO). A new tetraphenylethylene derivative functionalized with alkyne moieties has been prepared to work as a fluorescent probe. A “click” reaction was chosen because NO is able to generate the required catalytic species by reducing Cu(II) to Cu(I).
