The reaction of ethylene glycol, 1,4-butanediol, 1,6-hexanediol, 3,6-dioxaoctane-1,8-diol (triethylene glycol), poly(ethylene oxide)s with Mn = 300,1000 and 3000, or with poly(propylene oxide)s with Mn = 425 and 2000 in excess with AIBN leads to the corresponding bis(hydroxyalkyl) 2,2′-azodiisobutyrates (1a–i). These initiators are suited to synthesize telechelics. [EN] The bonding evolution in hetero-Diels-Alder (HDA) reactions has been studied by an ELF analysis of the electron reorganization along the HDA reaction between nitroethylene 6 and dimethylvinylamine (DMVA) 9 at the B3LYP/6-31G* level. This cycloaddition takes place along a two-stages one-step mechanism. In the first stage of the reaction, the C1-C6 bond is formed by coupling of two pseudoradical centers positioned at the most electrophilic carbon of nitroethylene 6 and the most nucleophilic center of DMVA 9. Fluoroform, HFC-23, is an industrial byproduct from the synthesis of polytetrafluoroethylene and is a vastly underused resource; however, its physicochemical properties have hindered progress toward synthetic uses. Herein, we describe the use of HFC-23 as a cheap trifluoromethylating agent in two reactions for the highly diastereoselective synthesis of medicinally attractive chiral amines with two stereogenic carbon centers: a base-dependent, stereodivergent nucleophilic addition to synthesize enantioenriched vicinal diamines and a tandem nucleophilic addition/aza-Michael sequence toward enantioenriched isoindolines.

Transferability of ASTM/NIST alanine–polyethylene recipe at ISS

Abstract Alanine–polyethylene solid state dosimeters were prepared at Istituto Superiore di Sanita (ISS) following the recipe proposed by National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) with the goal of testing its transferability. Dosimeters were prepared using 95% alanine and 5% polyethylene, by weight. They are rugged and of increased sensitivity, repeatability and reproducibility as respect to the ISS alanine-paraffin pellets. Reproducibility of about 1% was obtained at 10 Gy and at 3 Gy if one single pellet or a stack of five dosimeters were used, respectively.
