Academic achievement and self-concept of deaf and hard-of-hearing and hearing students transitioning from the first to second cycle of primary school…
2018
ABSTRACTThis study was done to examine the transition of deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) and hearing students from the first cycle (Grade 4) to the second cycle (Grade 5) of primary education in Ethiopia. Academic achievement and self-concept were measured longitudinally with 103 DHH and hearing students. Participants were selected from three different settings (special schools, special classes and regular schools). Self-Description Questionnaire I (Marsh, H. W. 1990. Self-Description Questionnaire – I (SDQ I). Manual. MacArthur, NSW, Australia: University of Western Sydney) was used to measure the children’s self-concept. The results showed a decrease in the academic achievement and academi…
Towards science education for sustainable development in developing countries : a study of Ethiopia, Ghana and Nigeria
2006
Kestävän kehityksen edistäminen on yhteinen tavoite maailmanlaajuisesti.
Towards student-centred pedagogy : action research with Ethiopian village school teachers
2018
This study is an action research that was planned and implemented with 23 Ethiopian Village School teachers. The action of the four year project concentrated on developing new, student-centred teaching methods instead of traditional lecturing and rote learning in one remote school. The overall aim of the study was to follow this process and the teachers’ professional development, and to explore how the practical arrangements, such as material or cultural surroundings, constrain or enable usage of student-centred methods at the school. The theoretical framework of the study consists of theories about professional development, action research, and the theory of practice architectures. The dat…
Contribution of the Ethiopian diaspora to peace-building : a case study of the Tigrai Development Association
2010
Introduction: Migration scholars believed that, traditionally, most immigrants tended to sever their ties to their countries of origin as they get assimilated into the countries of destination. Recent studies suggest, however, that transnational migrants tend to maintain ties with the countries of origin and contribute to conflict or peace-building and development activities. With this premise, DIASPEACE, a research project undertaken by a consortium of eight partner institutions, intends to generate evidence-based and policy-relevant knowledge on the impact of diaspora activities on conflict and peace-building by studying diaspora networks in Europe and their transnational activities in th…
Folkloristiikkaa Etiopiassa
2010
[Ensimmäinen kappale] Vietin joulu-tammikuun 2010 Etiopiassa Addis Abeban yliopiston kutsumana vierailevana professorina. Kutsun Addis Abebaan, etiopialai…
Demands and Challenges : Experiences of Ethiopian Rural School Teachers
2014
Rural schools in Ethiopia are characterized by high drop-out rates, a lack of teaching materials, and low learning achievements. This study examines the experiences of teachers who work in such schools and emphasizes that their work can make significant contributions to the development of education in Ethiopia. The paper seeks to answer a question: ‘How do the teachers perceive their work situation and how could this be improved?’ The findings show that according to teachers’ opinion the current principal challenge is the tension between strict curriculum requirements, associated with annual testing, and follow-up, while the government insists that teaching should be more student centered. …
Vita e martirio di san Bartolomeo apostolo
2012
Meaningful life and survival in urban poverty : an ethnographic study on the dimensions of deprivation and anxiety and the coping strategies of a gro…
2014
Tähän etnografiseen tutkimukseen on haastateltu seitsemää pitopalveluosuuskunnan jäsentä Addis Abebassa, Etiopiassa. Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan haastateltavien pääasiallisia puutteen ja huolen aiheita, ja heidän henkilökohtaisia selviytymisstrategioitaan urbaanissa köyhyydessä. Kuinka ihmiset määrittelevät ja kokevat erilaiset päivittäiset puutteen ja huolen aiheensa? Mitä voimavaroja haastateltavat voivat käyttää selviytyäkseen urbaanissa köyhyydessä? Olen kytkenyt haastateltavien narratiivit Etiopiassa ja Addis Abebassa parhaillaan käynnissä olevaan yhteiskunnalliseen muutokseen hyödyntäen sekä haastatteluaineistoa että kirjallisuutta liittyen muun muassa urbaanin köyhyyden diskurssin ke…
Global climate policies, local institutions and food security in a pastoral society in Ethiopia
2011
This paper explores climate change adaptation within national policy priorities in a least developed country (LDC). The premise of the article is that when considering food security, climate is an exogenous trigger, while the deeper causes lie in social problems. Therefore, adaptation is subordinate to poverty alleviation. The paper examines how these two goals, climate adaptation and poverty alleviation, can be combined. Recent studies have shown that the most effective way to adapt to changing climate conditions in a poor country is to rely on local institutions that have established and sustainable mechanisms to deal with extreme climatic conditions. This research analyzes the stakeholde…
