A combined single range and single image device for low-cost measurement of building facade features
2008
The dimensions of building facades and window apertures are usually determined by making direct measurements using tapes and plummets. This approach, however, has a number of drawbacks including the physical risk to which the persons making the measurements are exposed. This paper proposes an indirect approach based on close range photogrammetry that is inexpensive, simple, fast and safe, and which does not require specialist staff or direct ground control measurements. The method is based on taking a picture using a digital camera and measuring the distance to the object using a handheld laser distance meter. Both items of equipment are mounted on a specially designed support that allows t…
Magnetic phase transition and magnetic bistability in oxamato-based CoIICuII bimetallic MOF thin films
2019
Abstract Thin films of an anionic oxamato-bridged cobalt(II)–copper(II) 3D MOF have been growth at 120 °C in DMSO through a one-pot reaction from Co(NO3)2·6H2O and (Me4N)2[Cu(2,6-Et2pa)2]·6H2O (2,6-Et2pa = N-2,6-diethylphenyloxamate) over Si(111) surfaces functionalized with carboxylic acid terminating groups. These heterobimetallic CoII2CuII3 MOF thin films (2) of about ten nanometers thickness show a ferrimagnetically ordered phase below ca. 10 K with a relatively large magnetic hysteresis similar to that of the bulk material of formula (Me4N)2[Co2Cu3(2,6-Et2pa)6]·5H2O (1).
Photocleavable microcapsules built from photoreactive nanospheres.
2005
We show how photo-cross-linking of nanoparticles within the micrometer-sized thin oil shell of water-oil-water emulsion droplets leads to a new species of optically addressable microcontainers. The inner water droplet of these emulsions may contain drugs, dyes, or other water-soluble components, leading to filled containers. The thickness, mechanical stability, and light resistance of the container walls can be controlled in a simple way by the amount and adjustable photoreactivity of the nanoparticles. Importantly, the chemical bonds between the nanoparticles constituting the microcapsule shell can be cleaved photochemically by irradiation with UV light. This optically controlled destructi…
On the Use of the Nanoindentation Unloading Curve to Measure the Young's Modulus of Polymers on a Nanometer Scale
2005
Summary: The nanoindentation test is a fundamental tool to assess the link between morphology and mechanical properties. The preliminary results of a more exhaustive study about the applicability to polymers of the most used procedure to determine elastic modulus by indentation are reported in this short communication. A departure of the experimental conditions from the theoretical assumptions and results that give rise to the Oliver and Pharr analysis is shown to occur under a wide range of experimental conditions, with applied loads and penetration depths covering several orders of magnitude and using different indenter geometries. Unloading curves with exponents significantly larger than…
EVA Copolymer Based Nanocomposites
2002
Nanocomposites are a new class of polymer material with an ultrafine phase dispersion of the order of a few nanometers that shows very interesting properties often very different from those of conventional filled polymers. In this work the mechanical and optical properties of Poly-[ethylene-co-(vinyl acetate)] (EVA copolymer) based nanocomposites have been investigated to evaluate its possible use in several applications. For example, films for covering greenhouse effect. Mechanical properties, and the rigidity in particular, are, on the contrary, quite low. Nanocomposites should avoid this shortcoming if optical properties and processability are not unfavorably effected. EVA copolymer base…
