Detection of Internet robots using a Bayesian approach

2015

A large part of Web traffic on e-commerce sites is generated not by human users but by Internet robots: search engine crawlers, shopping bots, hacking bots, etc. In practice, not all robots, especially the malicious ones, disclose their identities to a Web server and thus there is a need to develop methods for their detection and identification. This paper proposes the application of a Bayesian approach to robot detection based on characteristics of user sessions. The method is applied to the Web traffic from a real e-commerce site. Results show that the classification model based on the cluster analysis with the Ward's method and the weighted Euclidean metric is very effective in robot det…

Scenery Flow, Conical Densities, and Rectifiability

2015

We present an application of the recently developed ergodic theoretic machinery on scenery flows to a classical geometric measure theoretic problem in Euclidean spaces. We also review the enhancements to the theory required in our work. Our main result is a sharp version of the conical density theorem, which we reduce to a question on rectifiability.

Darboux curves on surfaces I

2017

International audience; In 1872, G. Darboux defined a family of curves on surfaces of $\mathbb{R}^3$ which are preserved by the action of the Mobius group and share many properties with geodesics. Here, we characterize these curves under the view point of Lorentz geometry and prove that they are geodesics in a 3-dimensional sub-variety of a quadric $\Lambda^4$ contained in the 5-dimensional Lorentz space $\mathbb{R}^5_1$ naturally associated to the surface. We construct a new conformal object: the Darboux plane-field $\mathcal{D}$ and give a condition depending on the conformal principal curvatures of the surface which guarantees its integrability. We show that $\mathcal{D}$ is integrable w…

On the classification of CAT(0) structures for the 4-string braid group

2005

This paper is concerned with the class of so-called CAT(0) groups, namely, those groups that admit a geometric (i.e., properly discontinuous, co-compact, and isometric) action on some CAT(0) space. More precisely, we are interested in knowing to what extent it is feasible to classify the geometric CAT(0) actions of a given group (up to, say, equivariant homothety of the space). A notable example of such a classification is the flat torus theorem, which implies that the minimal geometric CAT(0) actions of the free abelian group Z (n ≥ 1) are precisely the free actions by translations of Euclidean space E. Typically, however, a given group will have uncountably many nonequivalent actions, mak…

Geostatistical computing of acoustic maps in the presence of barriers

2009

Acoustic maps are the main diagnostic tools used by authorities for addressing the growing problem of urban acoustic contamination. Geostatistics models phenomena with spatial variation, but restricted to homogeneous prediction regions. The presence of barriers such as buildings introduces discontinuities in prediction areas. In this paper we investigate how to incorporate information of a geographical nature into the process of geostatistical prediction. In addition, we study the use of a Cost-Based distance to quantify the correlation between locations.

A principled approach to network-based classification and data representation

2013

Measures of similarity are fundamental in pattern recognition and data mining. Typically the Euclidean metric is used in this context, weighting all variables equally and therefore assuming equal relevance, which is very rare in real applications. In contrast, given an estimate of a conditional density function, the Fisher information calculated in primary data space implicitly measures the relevance of variables in a principled way by reference to auxiliary data such as class labels. This paper proposes a framework that uses a distance metric based on Fisher information to construct similarity networks that achieve a more informative and principled representation of data. The framework ena…

Geometric Aspects of Thermodynamics

2016

This chapter deals with mathematical aspects of thermodynamics most of which will be seen to be primarily of geometrical nature. Starting with a short excursion to differentiable manifolds we summarize the properties of functions, of vector fields and of one-forms on thermodynamic manifolds. This summary centers on exterior forms over Euclidean spaces and the corresponding differential calculus. In particular, one-forms provide useful tools for the analysis of thermodynamics. A theorem by Caratheodory is developed which is closely related to the second law of thermodynamics. The chapter closes with a discussion of systems which depend on two variables and for which there is an interesting a…

Multi axis representation and Euclidean distance of muscle fatigue indexes during evoked contractions

2014

International audience; In this article, we proposed a new representation of muscular fatigue during evoked muscle contractions based on fatigue indexes such as peak to peak amplitude, RMS of the M wave, mean and median frequency and fatigue index calculated from continuous wavelet transform (I CWT). These new representations of muscle fatigue using multi axis represented and Euclidean distance give better insights on changes in physiological characteristics during muscle fatigue. This technique provides a fatigue index using several muscle characteristics. The use of other kinds of fatigue characteristics as force could also be possible.
