Dry vs soaked wood: Modulating the volatile extractible fraction of oak wood by heat treatments
2012
The aim of this study was to analyze the impact of the water content of wood on the concentrations of volatile compounds which can be extracted after heat treatments. Head Space-Solid Phase Micro Extraction Gas Chromatography coupled to Mass Spectrometry (HS-SPME GC-MS) has been used to compare the concentrations of six aroma compounds (vanillin, furfural, eugenol, guaiacol and cis- and trans-whisky lactones) in hydroalcoholic extracts of heated oak wood samples either previously soaked in hot water or not. Except for eugenol, concentrations of extracted aromas appeared to be lower in soaked woods than in dry woods for temperatures up to 200 °C. If a delaying effect of water could explain s…

2020
In the present work I propose to reflect on the unquestionable respect that especially vulnerable life deserves, such as that of the Nascituri who suffer from some type of disability. This respect would constitute a basic requirement of the content of justice. The reflection is made in the context of two alleged new rights to which the so-called wrongful birth and wrongful life actions originated in Anglo-Saxon jurisprudence have given rise: it is about the right not to be born (or perhaps more precisely, the right not to have been born) and the right not to be born with relevant physical or mental limitations. En el presente trabajo me propongo reflexionar acerca del incuestionable respeto…
Determining the effects of Eugenol on the bond strength of resin-based restorative materials to dentin : a meta-analysis of the literature
2020
Este artículo se encuentra disponible en la siguiente URL: https://www.mdpi.com/2076-3417/10/3/1070/htm Este artículo pertenece al número especial " Permanent and long-term biodegradable biomaterials". The aim of this study was to determine whether the residual presence of eugenol in coronal dentin may compromise the bond strength of resin-based restorative materials. A search was performed on MEDLINE/Pubmed, Scopus, and by hand search for relevant papers. No restriction was applied for language and publication date. The studies selected for analysis tested specimens with reduced size (micro-shear bond strength ( SBS) and micro-tensile bond strength ( TBS)) of adhesive systems and resin-bas…
Efficacy of clove oil and ethanol against Saprolegnia sp. and usability as antifungal agents during incubation of rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss (…
2013
Inhibitory concentrations of clove oil and ethanol against growth of Saprolegnia sp. hyphae were screened by a modification of the hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) seed MicroPlate (HeMP) method and their usability as antifungal agents during incubation of rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss eggs was tested. In vitro experiment showed that in continuous static exposure, clove oil at 100 mg L−1 significantly inhibited the growth of Saprolegnia, whereas in bath exposures, clove oil at 500 mg L−1 had no significant effect at any exposure time tested (15, 60 and 240 min), but clove oil at 10 000 mg L−1 significantly inhibited growth at all exposure times. Clove oil and ethanol treatments had no visible e…
Chemical composition, antimicrobial and antioxidant activity of the essential oils from Pimpinellatragium Vill. subsp. glauca (C. Presl.) C. BrulloBr…
2013
The essential oils from flowers, leaves and stems hydrodistilled from Pimpinella tragium Vill, subsp. glauca were characterised by GC and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis. The C-12 nor-sesquiterpenes are the principal class of metabolites (56.6-70.6%) among which geijerene (28.9÷49.3%) and pregeijerene (10÷19.1%) predominate. Antimicrobial and antioxidant activities were evaluated. The minimum inhibitory concentration values indicate that oil obtained from the stems is the most active for antimicrobial activities and the sample with the biggest antioxidant capacity is the flower oil.
Composition and allelopathic effect of essential oils of two thistles: Cirsium creticum (Lam.) D.Urv. ssp. triumfetti (Lacaita) Werner and Carduus n…
2007
Abstract Cirsium and Carduus are two of the main genera of true thistles. Different species in these genera share a quantity of secondary metabolites and have interesting ecological properties. The essential oils of two species, Cirsium creticum and Carduus nutans, were analysed, showing the presence as main compounds of 4-ethyl guaiacol (15%), hexadecanoic acid (10.6%), (E)-β-damascenone (7.8%), dihydroactinidiolide (6.0%) and 4-vinyl guaiacol (4.5%) for C. creticum and hexadecanoic acid (18.6%), hexahydrofarnesylacetone (7.8%), heptacosane (5.9%), 4-vinyl guaiacol (5.8%), pentacosane (3.8%) and eugenol (3.6%) for C. nutans. The oils were evaluated at different doses for their effect on ge…

Quantitative Comparison of Free and Bound Volatiles of Two Commercial Tomato Cultivars (Solanum lycopersicumL.) during Ripening
2009
The changes in the profile of both free and glycosidically bound volatiles were studied in Moneymaker and Raf tomato cultivars during fruit ripening. The concentrations of 20 of 24 and of 27 of 30 compounds detected in the free volatile fraction (FVF) and glycosidically bound fraction (GBF), respectively, differed significantly between cultivars during ripening. Most free and bound volatiles increased during ripening in both cultivars. The contribution of each free volatile compound to the overall aroma was estimated by calculating its log U value, which indicated that only 11 compounds seem to exert a strong influence. Nine volatiles were detected exclusively in the GBF, among them geranio…
