Nordic countries stand out from the rest of the Europe in terms of job quality. Comparative research literature sought to explain the distinctiveness of Nordic countries with diverse sets of institutional frameworks. However, global competition, technological revolution and deregulation are common developments throughout the industrial world – processes which are seen to erode the meaning of institutions and nation states as protective mechanisms. Empirical analyses of European intellectual property rights institutions

This dissertation consists of introduction chapter and five empirical studies on European intellectual property rights institutions. Chapters 2, 3 and 4 are micro-level studies and the perspective shifts to macro-level in Chapters 5 and 6. Chapters 2, 3, 5 and 6 analyze two-tiered patent systems and Chapter 4 focuses on design rights. Chapter 2 analyzes the choice between patent and utility model protection among German firms. The results indicate that larger firms are more likely to use both protection methods and that a short life cycle of products and services is associated with an increased likelihood to use utility models. Interconceptualizing Europe and Peace : Identity Building Under the European Heritage Label

AbstractThis chapter investigates how peace is used in attempts to build a collective identity for the European Union in the context of the European Heritage Label (EHL), a central instrument in the EU’s cultural heritage policy. The official EHL documents and the websites of the EHL sites are analysed using a conceptual approach that particularly focuses on the interconceptualizations between peace and Europe. The ways peace is discussed can be divided into four thematic categories: treaties, institutions, practices, and symbols related to peace. The chapter concludes that heritage related to peace is mainly discussed in a non-contradictory manner, with little space for dissonance.

Keskustelu Euroopan sosiaalisen mallin ympärillä käy kuumana. Integraation syveneminen ja Euroopan unionin kasvustrategia edellyttävät jäsenmailta kansallisten työ-, talous- ja sosiaalipoliittisten järjestelmien tehokasta kehittämistä, eikä kriittisistä äänenpainoista ole ollut pulaa. Eurooppalaisen ay-liikkeen mukaan EU on asettanut kilpailukyvyn tärkeimmäksi arvokseen ja jättänyt työntekijät unhoon. Työnantajapuoli puolestaan kritisoi unionia ja sen jäsenmaita siitä, ettei kilpailukyvyn eteen ole tehty vieläkään tarpeeksi. Argumentoinnin keinot S2-oppijoiden teksteissä

Tässä tutkielmassa tarkastellaan yläkoulua käyvien suomi toisena kielenä -oppijoiden argumentoinnin taitoja suhteessa Eurooppalaiseen viitekehykseen (EVK). Tutkielmassa selvitetään, miten eri kielitaitotasoille sijoittuvat S2-oppijat argumentoivat ja vastaavatko heidän argumentointitaitonsa Viitekehyksessä kullekin taitotasolle määriteltyjä kuvauksia. Teoriataustana toimivat Perelmanin ja Olbrechts-Tytecan (1969) sekä Bayerin (2007) argumentointiteoriat. Aineisto koostuu 72:sta vuosina 2010–2011 Jyväskylän yliopiston soveltavan kielentutkimuksen laitoksen DIALUKI-tutkimushankkeessa kerätystä ja taitotasoitetusta mielipidekirjoituksesta.
