Catestatin-like immunoreactivity in the rat eye

2014

The aim of the study was to investigate the presence and distribution of the chromogranin A-derived peptide catestatin in the rat eye and trigeminal ganglion by immunofluorescence using an antibody which recognizes not only free catestatin but also larger fragments containing the sequence of catestatin. Western blots were performed in an attempt to characterize the immunoreactivities detected by the catestatin antiserum. Sparse immunoreactive nerve fibers were visualized in the corneal stroma, in the chamber angle, in the sphincter muscle but also in association with the dilator muscle, in the stroma of the ciliary body and processes, but dense in the irideal stroma, around blood vessels at…

Variability in recording and scoring of respiratory events during sleep in Europe: a need for uniform standards.

2015

Abstract: Uniform standards for the recording and scoring of respiratory events during sleep are lacking in Europe, although many centres follow the published recommendations of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. The aim of this study was to assess the practice for the diagnosis of sleep-disordered breathing throughout Europe. A specially developed questionnaire was sent to representatives of the 31 national sleep societies in the Assembly of National Sleep Societies of the European Sleep Research Society, and a total of 29 countries completed the questionnaire. Polysomnography was considered the primary diagnostic method for sleep apnea diagnosis in 10 (34.5%), whereas polygraphy was …

Incidence Patterns and Trends of non-Central Nervous System Solid Tumours in Children and Adolescents. A Collaborative Study of the Spanish Populatio…

2016

Journal Article; OBJECTIVE To describe incidence patterns and trends in children (0-14 years) and adolescents (15-19 age-range) with solid tumours, except those of central nervous system (CNS), in Spain. METHODS Cases were drawn from eleven Spanish population-based cancer registries. Incidence was estimated for the period 1983-2007 and trends were evaluated using Joinpoint regression analysis. RESULTS The studied tumour groups accounted for 36% of total childhood cancers and 47.6% of those diagnosed in adolescence with annual rates per million of 53.5 and 89.3 respectively. In children 0 to 14 years of age, Neuroblastoma (NB) was the commonest (7.8%) followed by Soft-tissue sarcomas (STS) (…

The dilemma for patients with chronic hepatitis C: treat now or warehouse?

2013

Dual therapy with peginterferon and ribavirin, the only treatent for chronic hepatitis C available In Italy and in many other ountries worldwide up to 2013, obtains satisfactory response ates in infections with hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 2, but far rom optimal for other genotypes [1,2]. Eradication requires 6–12 onths of therapy, with significant inconvenience for patients: dverse reactions force premature termination in about 20% of atients and reduced the quality of life for almost all who persist n treatment. In view of the important and prolonged side effects, nterferon-based treatment is perceived as a nightmare by many symptomatic,well-being, socially activepatients (the largema…

How is stroke care organised in Europe?

2016

Summary Introduction There is a wide difference in stroke care in European Countries, conditioning the performance in stroke management. Objective The authors review current national and regional stroke organisational models and their adherence to current European Stroke Organisation (ESO) guidelines across the Europe and on-going European Stroke Projects. Stroke Care Models investigated in: Austria, Switzerland, Bavaria (Germany), London and Greater Manchester in the UK, Catalonia (Spain), Lombardy Region in Italy, Poland and Northern Portugal. Discussion There is a lack of uniform stroke care in European Countries as defined by current ESO guidelines. For this reason, ESO has established …

Clinical Efficacy of Laquinimod for the Treatment of Multiple Sclerosis; Pooled Analyses from the ALLEGRO and BRAVO Phase III Trials (S01.007)

2012

Objective: The current report provides detail on pooled analyses assessing the effect of laquinimod on relapse, disability, and brain atrophy measures from the recently completed phase III trials ALLEGRO and BRAVO. Background Laquinimod is an oral, CNS acting immunomodulator in development for the treatment of multiple sclerosis. Its impact on disability progression and brain atrophy, two indices of longterm outcome for patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) are being studied in its phase III trials. Design/Methods: MS patients (N=2437) were randomized to laquinimod (n=984) or placebo (n = 1006). In both trials, patients underwent neurological examinations including the Expanded Disability S…

European Society of Hypertension recommendations for conventional, ambulatory and home blood pressure measurement

2003

IntroductionOver the past 20 years or so, the accuracy of the conventional Riva-Rocci/Korotkoff technique of blood pressure measurement has been questioned and efforts have been made to improve the technique with automated devices. In the same period, recognition of the phenomenon of white-coat hype

Substance P inactivation by transglutaminase in vitro.

1992

Gamma(glutamyl5)spermine derivative of substance P (Spm-SP) was synthesized in vitro in the presence of purified guinea pig liver transglutaminase and Ca2+. The spermine adduct of the neuropeptide was purified by HPLC on a reversed-phase column and characterized by fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry. The biological activities of Spm-SP were tested by assaying, in comparison with substance P, its ability to induce both the contractions of smooth muscle in vitro and the edema formation in vivo. Spm-SP was shown not to elicit contractile responses in the isolated rat stomach strip and duodenum and not to antagonize the spasmogenic effect evoked by the native neuropeptide. Furthermore, Spm…

Practice guidelines of the European Society of Hypertension for clinic, ambulatory and self blood pressure measurement.

2005

Introduction Blood pressuremeasurement is the basis for the diagnosis, management, treatment, epidemiology and research of hypertension, and the decisions affecting these aspects of hypertensionwill be influenced, for better or worse, by the accuracyofmeasurement.Anaccuratebloodpressure reading is a prerequisite, therefore, regardless of which technique is used, yet all too often the accuracy of measurement is taken for granted or ignored. This paper is a summary up-dated version of the recommendations published by the European Society of Hypertension (ESH) Working Group on Blood Pressure Monitoring for conventional (CBPM), ambulatory (ABPM) and self (SBPM) blood pressure measurement in 200…
