Constructing social Europe through European cultural heritage
2021
The political and economic crises of the recent decades as well as the new changes brought on by globalization and digitalization have contributed to exacerbate social inequalities and injustice and revealed different social realities in Europe. The EU increasingly deals with social issues in its cultural and heritage policy. In this article, we explore the construction of this social dimension and advance the concept of 'social Europe' by exploring its cultural aspect based on our analysis of a recent EU heritage action, the European Heritage Label. In this action, the narrations of the European past and the attempts to foster common cultural heritage in Europe function as building blocks …

Religion and State in the European Union
2011
The “crucifix debate” and the full-face veil ban in France are just a few examples from a long list of problems concerning the relations between the religion and the state in the European countries that have involved the European public opinion over the last years. The article aims to present the complex picture of Church-state relations in Europe in the context of the intensification of all-European debate on the place of religion in the European Union. It shows that in spite of the widely recognized secularization thesis in western social sciences most of the European states are the arena of various problems involving the religious dimension and the question about the future role of the r…
The European Union and Its Public Relations : Context, Actions, and Challenges of a Supranational Polity
2020
The European Union (EU) is the most advanced regional political and economic entity in the world. Since the Maastricht Treaty in 1992, the EU has gained increasing power in enacting new legislation in Europe, and has become a key player in international and trade relations. The EU as a supranational polity comprises different types of organizations that daily employ communication as a strategic means to establish relationships with different publics. This chapter presents and discusses the context, the actions, and the challenges faced by the EU in communicating to and with its diverse publics. Particularly, it shows how public relations and communication activities have played a key role i…
The Supranational Dimension in Max Weber’s Vision of Politics
2019
Max Weber analyzed politics from the perspective of Chancen for actors, and he never separated world politics from domestic politics. The “Westphalian balance” between great European powers shaped Weber’s views on international polity. However, he also regarded Western individualism, human rights, and parliamentary democracy as necessary qualities to possess in order to be recognized as a great power. This vision provided the basis for his wartime critique of the expansionist tendencies in German foreign policy and for his demand for the parliamentarization of German politics. After the end of World War I, Weber used Woodrow Wilson’s idea of the League of Nations as the basis for a proposal…

Of Walls and Fences: Brexit and the History of Cross-Border Migration
2019
Champions of Brexit have employed a large arsenal of arguments to boost their case for a Britain better off on its own, freed from its current European entanglements. All kinds of supposed ills have been linked to the country’s EU membership in British public debates over the years, ranging from petty bureaucratic absurdities, such as directives regarding crooked bananas, to heavy-handed rulings on higher matters of domestic and foreign policy. Lamentations about continental meddling have been accompanied by grand, nostalgic visions of an unfettered future Great Britain, ready to return to its proper, independent role on the global stage once it manages to cast off the shackles imposed by B…
Industrial Citizenship, Cosmopolitanism and European Integration
2014
Abstract. There has been an explosion of interest in the idea of European Union citizenship in recent years, as a defining example of postnational cosmopolitan citizenship potentially replacing, or at least layered on top of national citizenships. We argue this form of EU citizenship undermines industrial citizenship, which is a crucial support for the egalitarianism and social solidarity on which other types of citizenship are based. Because industrial citizenship arises from collectivities based in class identities and national institutions, it depends on the nation state erritorial order and the social closure inherent in this. EU citizenship in its current ‘postnational’ form is realize…
EU criminal justice and Italian law: investigating terminological gaps
2018
Legal translation entails a basic knowledge of the legal systems involved, familiarity with the relevant terminology and competency in the specific legal writing style of the target language. Apart from terminological lacunae and lexical gaps, the translator has to consider not only the textual conventions in the source language that are often culture-dependent and may not correspond to conventions in the target culture, but also the linguistic structures found in the source language that may have no equivalent structures in the target language. In this this regard, the EU carries this process to new heights for a number of reasons: it is a novel creation; law plays a central part in the ex…
