Adaptive response of human skeletal muscle to simulated hypergravity condition

The mechanical behaviour of leg extensor muscles of five international-level athletes was evaluated during 13 months training period. Drop jumps, average mechanical power during 15 S continuous jump, and vertical jumps performed with and without extra weights were used to measure explosive power characteristics. The data recorded in vertical jumps was utilized for construction of force-velocity relationship (F-V curve). The athletes did not show improvement in any of the variables studied after 12 months of intensive systematic training programme. Neuromuscular adaptations to combined strength and endurance training: order and time-of-day

AbstractThe present study examined the effects of 24 weeks of morning vs. evening same-session combined strength (S) and endurance (E) training on neuromuscular and endurance performance. Fifty-one men were assigned to the morning (m) or evening (e) training group, where S preceded E or vice versa (SEm, ESm, SEe and ESe), or to the control group. Isometric force, voluntary activation, EMG and peak wattage during the maximal cycling test were measured. Training time did not significantly affect the adaptations. The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) and hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axes are typically conceptualized as mutually inhibitory systems; however, previous studies have found evidence for positive within-person associations (i.e., coupling) between cortisol and testosterone. One developmental hypothesis is that positive testosterone-cortisol coupling is unique to the adolescent period and that coupling becomes attenuated, or even switches direction, in adulthood. Metabolic response of endurance athletes to training with added load.

Endurance athletes were divided into experimental (n=12) and control (n=12) groups to investigate the effects of extra-load training on energy metabolism during exercise. A vest weighing 9%–10% body weight was worn every day from morning to evening for 4 weeks including every (n=6) or every other (n=6) training session. After 4 weeks the control group had a lower blood lactate concentration during submaximal running, whereas the experimental group had significantly higher blood lactate and oxygen uptake (p<0.01–p<0.05), and a lower 2 mmol lactate threshold (p<0.05) and an increased blood lactate concentration after a short running test to exhaustion (p<0.05). Home blood pressure control is low during the critical morning hours in patients with hypertension: the SURGE observational study

Background. The morning blood pressure (BP) surge is associated with a peak increase in vascular events. Objective. The aim of this observational study was to evaluate morning BP control in treated hypertensive patients using home BP (HBP) monitoring and to compare these findings with clinic BP control. Methods. Clinic BP was measured twice during a 2-week period, prior to medication. Seated HBP was measured, using a BHS-validated device, three times per day over a 2-week period.
