Caracterización, Inventariación y aplicación del método de Valoración Biogeográfica de paisajes vegetales (LANBIOEVA) a la comarca de Collsacabra (Gi…

2018

The study presented in this paper takes part of a research project (LANBIOEVA: Landscape Biogeographic Evaluation) carried out for the past 25 years and it is, for now, its last stage. It’s a global landscape valuation method focused on vegetation as a main element of different units that can be evaluated. So far, the use of this method has resulted in numerous works: books, articles, book chapters, communications and presentations, and it has been applied in the study of different temperate and boreal regions of Europe and America. The method has been applied in the study and assessment of diverse vegetation landscapes of the Collsacabra shire (Girona). The objective is to verify its effec…

Effects of ozone on the foliar histology of the mastic plant (Pistacia lentiscus L.)

2004

[EN] An open-top chamber study was conducted to investigate the tissue and cellular-level foliar effects of ozone (O-3) on a Mediterranean evergreen species, the mastic plant (Pistacia lentiscus L.). Plants were exposed at three different O-3 levels, and leaf samples were collected periodically from the beginning of the exposure. Although no visible foliar injury was evident, alterations of the plastids and vacuoles in the mesophyll were observed. Senescence processes were accelerated with an anomalous stacking of tannin vacuoles, and a reduction in the size and number of the chloroplasts. Overall, most of the modifications induced by O-3 were consistent with previously reported observation…

Powdery mildew on Rhododendron caused by Erysiphe azaleae in Latvia.

2013

In 2002 a fungus causing powdery mildew on Rhododendron in Latvia was discovered and identified as Erysiphe azaleae. The powdery mildew has since then been observed on leaves and seed pods of deciduous azaleas as well as evergreen rhododendrons, although the disease is more common on taxa of deciduous azaleas. Development of mature chasmothecia has been noticed at every location where the disease was detected. The distribution area of E. azaleae is expanding gradually from the south-west and central regions to the north and east parts of Latvia. It has been suggested, that climate change and large-scale plant import favour this process. To our knowledge, Latvia is so far the farthest north-…

Updated single and dual crop coefficients for tree and vine fruit crops

2021

Abstract The present study reviews the research on the FAO56 crop coefficients of fruit trees and vines performed over the past twenty years. The main objective was to update information and extend tabulated single (K c ) and basal (K cb ) standard crop coefficients. The selection and analysis of the literature for this review have been done to consider only studies that adhere to FAO56 method, computing the reference ET with the FAO Penman–Monteith ET o equation and field measuring crop ET with proved accuracy. The crops considered refer to vine fruit crops, berries and hops, temperate climate evergreen fruit trees, temperate climate deciduous fruit trees and, tropical and subtropical fru…

Metabolic profiling of ripe olive fruit in response to moderate water stress

2013

a b s t r a c t The concentrations of different metabolites in olive (Olea europaea (L.)) fruit at harvest can be affected by water availability, with significant consequences on the composition and the quality of the resulting oil. The aim of the present study was to profile the metabolic composition of ripe olives (cv. Cipressino) grown under water-stress and irrigated conditions applied during the last part of the fruit developmental cycle (from pit hardening to commercial harvest). The imposed conditions resulted in a moderate water stress (−3.5 MPa) at the end of the experimental period. Samples (pulp + skin) of fruit collected at the stage of complete epicarp pigmentation were analyze…

Simultaneous pituitary–gonadal recrudescence in two Corsican populations of male blue tits with asynchronous breeding dates

2006

Animal populations living in geographically variable environments respond to different selection pressures. The adaptive character of the responses to environmental information determines the degree of synchrony of the breeding period with local optimal conditions. An example is provided by two populations of Mediterranean blue tits (Parus caeruleus) in Corsica, breeding in different habitats, with a 1-month difference in the onset of egg laying. This difference in the onset of lay is supposed to be adaptive because, although chicks from both populations are raised mostly on caterpillars, the timing of the appearance of caterpillars is earlier for populations of tits associated with deciduo…

Holocene environmental and climatic changes at Gorgo Basso, a coastal lake in southern Sicily, Italy

2009

Abstract We used a new sedimentary record to reconstruct the Holocene vegetation and fire history of Gorgo Basso, a coastal lake in south-western Sicily (Italy). Pollen and charcoal data suggest a fire-prone open grassland near the site until ca 10,000 cal yr BP (8050 cal BC), when Pistacia shrubland expanded and fire activity declined, probably in response to increased moisture availability. Evergreen Olea europaea woods expanded ca 8400 to decline abruptly at 8200 cal yr BP, when climatic conditions became drier at other sites in the Mediterranean region. Around 7000 cal yr BP evergreen broadleaved forests ( Quercus ilex , Quercus suber and O. europaea ) expanded at the cost of open commu…

Mid- and late-Holocene vegetation and fire history at Biviere di Gela, a coastal lake in southern Sicily, Italy

2009

The vegetation and fire history of few coastal sites has been investigated in the Mediterranean region so far. We present the first paleoecological reconstruction from coastal Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. We analysed pollen and charcoal in the sediments of Biviere di Gela, a lake (lagoon) on the south coast of Sicily. Our data suggest that the area became afforested after a marine transgression at ca. 7200 cal b.p. (5250 b.c.). Build-up of forest and shrublands took ca. 200–300 years, mainly with the deciduous trees Quercus, Ostrya and Fraxinus. Juniperus expanded ca. 6900 cal b.p. (4950 b.c.), but declined again 6600 cal b.p. (4650 b.c.). Afterwards, evergreen trees…

A test on Ellenberg indicator values in the Mediterranean evergreen woods (Quercetea ilicis)

2015

The consistency and reliability of Ellenberg’s indicator values (Eiv) as ecological descriptors of the Mediterranean evergreen vegetation ascribed to the phytosociological class Quercetea ilicis have been checked on a set of 859 phytosociological releves × 699 species. Diagnostic species were identified through a Twinspan analysis and their Eiv analyzed and related to the following independent variables: (1) annual mean temperatures, (2) annual rainfall. The results provided interesting insights to disentangle the current syntaxonomical framework at the alliance level demonstrating the usefulness of ecological indicator values to test the efficiency and predictivity of the phytosociological…
