Need for Conclusive Evidence that Positive and Negative Reciprocity are Unrelated

2013

The strong reciprocity model of the evolution of human cooperation (1) postulates that positive and negative reciprocity are associated. Recently in PNAS, Yamagishi et al. (2) reported results that challenged this proposition by showing that the tendency to reject unfair offers in the ultimatum game is not related to various indicators of positive reciprocity in other experimental games. This result was corroborated by a nonsignificant correlation between self-reported positive and negative reciprocity.

Improvement in survival of metastatic colorectal cancer: Are the benefits of clinical trials reproduced in population-based studies?

2012

To describe trends in survival of non-resectable metastatic colorectal cancer (MCRC) over a 34-year period in a French population-based registry taking into account major advances in medical therapy.3804 patients with non-resectable metastatic colorectal cancer diagnosed between 1976 and 2009 were included. Three periods (1976-96, 1997-2004 and 2005-09) were considered. The proportion of patients receiving chemotherapy dramatically increased from 19% to 57% between the first two periods, then increased steadily thereafter reaching 59% during the last period (p0.001). Median relative survival increased from 5.9 months during the 1976-96 period to 10.2 months during the 1997-2004 period but, d…

The WHAAM Application: a Tool to Support the Evidence-Based Practice in the Functional Behaviour Assessment

2018

BackgroundThe most recent computing technologies can promote the application of evidence-based practice (EBP) in the field of applied behaviour analysis (ABA).ObjectiveThe study describes how the use of technology can simplify the application of EBPs in ABA.MethodsThe Web Health Application for ADHD Monitoring (WHAAM) application demonstrates this in the following two case studies. We are monitoring dysfunctional behaviours, collecting behavioural data, performing systematic direct observations, creating both visual baseline and intervention charts and evaluating the planned interventions using the TAU-U statistical index.ResultsSignificant positive changes of children’s problem behaviours …

Sporadic Parkinson disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis complex (Brait-Fahn-Schwartz disease).

2012

Clinical evidence for parkinsonism may accompany Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis with a frequency ranging from 5% to 17%. The concurrence of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and Parkinson's disease, outside the known Guam and Kii Peninsula foci, is instead rare, but this raises the possibility of a common pathogenesis. Clinically this complex presents with a levodopa-responsive parkinsonism and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and has been termed Brait-Fahn-Schwartz disease. Here we describe two patients with this uncommon neurodegenerative complex. Both presented with Parkinson disease and progressed to a full blown Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. We further suggest that the association of Parkinso…

WAO guideline for the management of hereditary angioedema

2012

Hereditary Angioedema (HAE) is a rare disease and for this reason proper diagnosis and appropriate therapy are often unknown or not available for physicians and other health care providers. For this reason we convened a group of specialists that focus upon HAE from around the world to develop not only a consensus on diagnosis and management of HAE, but to also provide evidence based grades, strength of evidence and classification for the consensus. Since both consensus and evidence grading were adhered to the document meets criteria as a guideline. The outcome of the guideline is to improve diagnosis and management of patients with HAE throughout the world and to help initiate uniform care …

Volume of Neonatal Care and Survival without Disability at 2 Years in Very Preterm Infants: Results of a French National Cohort Study

2019

International audience; Objectives To investigate the relation between neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) volume and survival, and neuromotor and sensory disabilities at 2 years in very preterm infants. Study design The EPIPAGE-2 (Etude Epidémiologique sur les Petits Âges Gestationnels-2) national prospective population-based cohort study was used to include 2447 babies born alive in 66 level III hospitals between 24 and 30 completed weeks of gestation in 2011. The outcome was survival without disabilities (levels 2-5 of the Gross Motor Function Classification System for cerebral palsy with or without unilateral or bilateral blindness or deafness). Units were grouped in quartiles according…

Standardized weaning of infants <32 weeks of gestation from continuous positive airway pressure – a feasibility study

2015

The practice of weaning premature infants from continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) varies considerably and is usually performed without written standards. In this study, the feasibility of a standardized weaning approach was evaluated. In a quasi-experimental design, data from a prospective, post-intervention cohort (n=41) were compared to data from a pre-intervention cohort (n=36). Standardized weaning was feasible but no significant differences in short-term respiratory outcomes were observed. Weaning from CPAP was achieved at 32.1 ± 1.6 (post-intervention) versus 32.5 ± 2.3 weeks (pre-intervention) postmenstrual age. More rigorous, large-scale clinical trials are necessary before …

Personal, social, and environmental factors associated with lifejacket wear in adults and children: A systematic literature review.

2018

© 2018 Peden et al. This is an open access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License, which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original author and source are credited. Objective Drowning claims 7% of the global burden of injury-related deaths. Lifejackets are routinely recommended as a drowning prevention strategy; however, a review of related factors regarding lifejacket wear has not previously been investigated. Methods This systematic review examined literature published from inception to December 2016 in English and German languages. The personal, social, and environmental factors associated with lif…

Alpha emitting nuclides in nuclear medicine theranostics.

2021

Theranostic applications with radio-isotopes currently are rapidly progressing and expand nuclear medicine application in clinical routine. Alpha emitting isotopes, in particular, have long been hypothesized to achieve relevant advances for the treatment of malignancies. Here, an overview of their properties and the knowledge of radiobiology is reviewed in view of clinical translation. Clinical evidence of radiopharmaceuticals based on alpha emitters is summarized with a focus on recent developments for treatment of metastasized castration resistant prostate cancer.Theranostische Anwendungen mit Radioisotopen machen derzeit rasche Fortschritte und erweitern den Einsatz der Nuklearmedizin in…

Cohort Profile: Design and methods of the PREDIMED-Plus randomized trial

2019

The PREDIMED (in Spanish: PREvención con DIeta MEDiterránea) primary prevention trial1–3 reported in 2013 that long-term adherence to an energy-unrestricted Mediterranean diet (MedDiet), supplemented with either extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO) or nuts, reduced cardiovascular disease (CVD). PREDIMED showed a 30% relative reduction in the composite cardiovascular primary endpoint (stroke, myocardial infarction or cardiovascular death).2,,3 However, the PREDIMED trial tested only the composition of the diet, but did not test other lifestyle interventions (i.e. energy reduction, increased physical activity (PA) and behavioural modification) frequently applied in the context of the current unprece…
