Slow-light soliton dynamics with relaxation

We solved the problem of soliton dynamics in the presence of relaxation. We demonstrate that the spontaneous emission of atoms is strongly suppressed due to nonlinearity. The spatial shape of the soliton is well preserved.

Quantum critical point in a periodic Anderson model

We investigate the symmetric Periodic Anderson Model (PAM) on a three-dimensional cubic lattice with nearest-neighbor hopping and hybridization matrix elements. Using Gutzwiller's variational method and the Hubbard-III approximation (which corresponds to the exact solution of an appropriate Falicov-Kimball model in infinite dimensions) we demonstrate the existence of a quantum critical point at zero temperature. Below a critical value $V_c$ of the hybridization (or above a critical interaction $U_c$) the system is an {\em insulator} in Gutzwiller's and a {\em semi-metal} in Hubbard's approach, whereas above $V_c$ (below $U_c$) it behaves like a metal in both approximations. Quasiparticle Mean Field: BCS and Beyond

In the previous two chapters we have laid the foundation for the BCS theory to describe open-shell nuclei. The properties of BCS solutions were compared with exact results from schematic solvable models. In this chapter we go into the details of numerical solution of the BCS equations. The implications of these solutions are discussed through applications to ds- and pf-shell nuclei.

Self-dressing in classical and quantum electrodynamics

A short review is presented of the theory of dressed states in nonrelativistic QED, encompassing fully and partially dressed states in atomic physics. This leads to the concept of the reconstruction of the cloud of virtual photons and of self-dressing. Finally some recent results on the classical counterpart of self-dressing are discussed and a comparison is made with the QED case. Attention is drawn to open problems and future lines of research are briefly outlined.

Theoretical investigation of the self-trapped hole in alkali halides. I. Long-range effects within the model hamiltonian approach

A small-radius polaron model of the self-trapped hole (Vk-center) in alkali halide crystals is presented. Along with the usual contributions, the electronic polarization is also included in accordance with the electronic polaron theory of Toyozawa. It is shown that the exact solution of the problem within the Landau-Pekar approximation leads to multi-hole quantum states accompanied by the relevant electronic and lattice polarizations. As an example the KCl crystal is considered, for which the Vk-center structure as well as the self-trapping energy are computed. Thickness scaling of space-charge-limited currents in organic layers with field- or density-dependent mobility

An exact solution is provided for the current density-voltage (J –V) characteristics of space-charge limited transport of a single carrier in organic layers with field-dependent mobility of the type μ (E) = μ0 exp (γ √E. The general scaling relationship for field-dependent mobility occurs in terms of the variables JL and V /L. For the density-dependence of the mobility found in organic field-effect transistor measurements, the thickness scaling occurs in terms of different variables, J1/βL and V /L. This paper studies the problem of designing wide area networks (WAN). In the paper the two-criteria topology assignment problem with two constraints is considered. The goal is select flow routes, channel capacities and network topology in order to minimize the total average delay per packet and the leasing cost of channels subject to the budget constraint and delay constraint. The problem is NP-complete. Then, the branch and bound method is used to construct the exact algorithm. Also the approximate algorithm is presented. Some computational results are reported. Based on computational experiments, several properties of the considered problem are formulated.
