Relationship between erythemal UV and broadband solar irradiation at high altitude in Northwestern Argentina

2018

An analysis of the broadband solar irradiation, IT, and the erythemal UV irradiation, IUVER, has been performed using the measurements made from 2013 to 2015 at three sites located at altitudes over 1000 m a.s.l. In Northwestern Argentina (Salta, El Rosal, and Tolar Grande). The main objective of this paper is to determine a relationship between IT and IUVER, which would allow to estimate IUVER from IT in places with few IUVER measurements available, and especially in those where is important to establish adequate photoprotection measures given their dense population and location at high altitude. The relationship between the daily values of IUVER and IT has been fitted to a linear regressi…

On a radiating fluid in a general relativistic context

2006

A model for the radiation hydrodynamics in general relativity is analyzed, describing the gravitational collapse and supernovae explosion. As these physical phenomena can be assumed spherically symmetric, the equations of motion for a unique fluid, representing the interaction between matter and radiation, are written in a spherical symmetric space-time with respect to a comoving frame. The system is completed by using the Eddington closure, assuming a local thermodynamical equilibrium for the radiation field. The resulting system is analyzed by the Lie symmetry approach and a reduction to an ODEs system is obtained. Numerical simulations of the solutions are performed, showing a realistic …

Low energy electrons and swift ion track structure in PADC

2015

The current work aims at providing an accurate description of the ion track-structure in poly-allyl dyglycol carbonate (PADC) by using an up-to-date Monte-Carlo code-called TILDA-V (a French acronym for Transport d'Ions Lourds Dans l'Aqua & Vivo). In this simulation the ion track-structure in PADC is mainly described in terms of ejected electrons with a particular attention done to the Low Energy Electrons (LEEs). After a brief reminder of the most important channels through which LEEs are prone to break a chemical bond, we will report on the simulated energetic distributions of LEEs along an ion track in PADC for particular incident energies located on both sides of the Bragg-peak position…

AKNS and NLS hierarchies, MRW solutions, $P_n$ breathers, and beyond

2018

We describe a unified structure of rogue wave and multiple rogue wave solutions for all equations of the Ablowitz-Kaup-Newell-Segur (AKNS) hierarchy and their mixed and deformed versions. The definition of the AKNS hierarchy and its deformed versions is given in the Sec. II. We also consider the continuous symmetries of the related equations and the related spectral curves. This work continues and summarises some of our previous studies dedicated to the rogue wave-like solutions associated with AKNS, nonlinear Schrodinger, and KP hierarchies. The general scheme is illustrated by the examples of small rank n, n ⩽ 7, rational or quasi-rational solutions. In particular, we consider rank-2 and …

An exact algorithm for preventive maintenance planning of series-parallel systems

2009

Reliability is a meaningful parameter in assessing the performance of systems such as chemical processing facilities, power plant, aircrafts, ships, etc. In the literature, reliability optimization is widely considered during the system design phase and it is carried out by an opportune selection of both system components and redundancy. On the other hand, the problem of maintaining a required level of reliability by an opportune maintenance policy has been poorly examined. The paper tackles this problem for a system whose major components can be maintained only during a planned system downtime. An exact algorithm is proposed in order to single out the set of components that must be maintai…

RepeatsDB in 2021: improved data and extended classification for protein tandem repeat structures

2020

The RepeatsDB database (URL: https://repeatsdb.org/) provides annotations and classification for protein tandem repeat structures from the Protein Data Bank (PDB). Protein tandem repeats are ubiquitous in all branches of the tree of life. The accumulation of solved repeat structures provides new possibilities for classification and detection, but also increasing the need for annotation. Here we present RepeatsDB 3.0, which addresses these challenges and presents an extended classification scheme. The major conceptual change compared to the previous version is the hierarchical classification combining top levels based solely on structural similarity (Class > Topology > Fold) with two new lev…

Ten important articles on noninvasive ventilation in critically ill patients and insights for the future: A report of expert opinions

2017

Background Noninvasive ventilation is used worldwide in many settings. Its effectiveness has been proven for common clinical conditions in critical care such as cardiogenic pulmonary edema and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease exacerbations. Since the first pioneering studies of noninvasive ventilation in critical care in the late 1980s, thousands of studies and articles have been published on this topic. Interestingly, some aspects remain controversial (e.g. its use in de-novo hypoxemic respiratory failure, role of sedation, self-induced lung injury). Moreover, the role of NIV has recently been questioned and reconsidered in light of the recent reports of new techniques such as high-fl…

Knowledge about COVID-19 and pandemic impact on Madrid dental students (Spain).

2020

Background: COVID-19 has had a major impact on dental activity, with implications on dental education. The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge about it and the pandemic impact on Spanish dental students. Material and Methods: An observational and cross-sectional study with a 17-items questionnaire was conducted. It was divided into three sections, sociodemographic data, self-perception and knowledge about the COVID-19 protective measures and repercussions on dental students. This survey was carried out in May 2020, and the response rate was 46.16%. The statistical analysis was performed by the Pearson chi-square test and Fisher’s exact test. Results: A total of 235 students respon…

Biotic recovery after the end-Triassic extinction event: Evidence from marine bivalves of the Neuquén Basin, Argentina

2017

We analyze the Late Triassic extinction and Early Jurassic recovery of bivalve faunas within marine environments in the Atuel River area of the Neuquén Basin, Argentina. Data were collected from a hundred samples with invertebrates in a well-exposed uppermost Triassic to lower Jurassic section in the Neuquén Basin (southern Mendoza Province, Argentina) and allow a high-resolution reconstruction of the local diversity dynamics. The nearly continuous presence of marine stenohaline major taxa such as cnidarians, rhynchonelliform brachiopods, echinoderms and cephalopods indicates normal salinity throughout. All bivalve species were identified, and each occurrence was recorded in meters above th…

IFN-gamma-induced protein 10 is a novel biomarker of rhinovirus-induced asthma exacerbations

2007

BACKGROUND: Rhinovirus-induced acute asthma is the most frequent trigger for asthma exacerbations. OBJECTIVE: We assessed which inflammatory mediators were released from bronchial epithelial cells (BECs) after infection with rhinovirus and then determined whether they were also present in subjects with acute virus-induced asthma, with the aim to identify a biomarker or biomarkers for acute virus-induced asthma. METHODS: BECs were obtained from bronchial brushings of steroid-naive asthmatic subjects and healthy nonatopic control subjects. Cells were infected with rhinovirus 16. Inflammatory mediators were measured by means of flow cytometry with a cytometric bead array. Subjects with acute a…
