Are media reports able to cause somatic symptoms attributed to WiFi radiation? An experimental test of the negative expectation hypothesis

2017

People suffering from idiopathic environmental intolerance attributed to electromagnetic fields (IEI-EMF) experience numerous non-specific symptoms that they attribute to EMF. The cause of this condition remains vague and evidence shows that psychological rather than bioelectromagnetic mechanisms are at work. We hypothesized a role of media reports in the etiology of IEI-EMF and investigated how somatosensory perception is affected. 65 healthy participants were instructed that EMF exposure can lead to enhanced somatosensory perception. Participants were randomly assigned to watch either a television report on adverse health effects of EMF or a neutral report. During the following experiment…

IL-10 and TNF-α polymorphisms in a sample of sicilian patients affected by tuberculosis: implication for ageing and life span expectancy

2003

Abstract Human longevity seems to be directly correlated with optimal functioning of the immune system, suggesting that some genetic determinants of longevity might reside in those polymorphisms for the immune system genes that regulate immune responses, in particular cytokine gene polymorphisms. In fact, modification of cytokine network is a constant report in studies on age related modification of immune response. Moreover cytokine polymorphisms studies are indicating their involvement in the reshaping of cytokines network as an integral part of the scenario related to a successful ageing. A particular role might be attributed to the influence of cytokine polymorphisms on the efficiency o…

Unexpected death for takayasu aortitis associated with coronary ostial stenosis

2015

The differential diagnosis of vasculitis is often a difficult task due to the frequent morphological similarities that various vasculitic syndromes express when the heart is the target organ. The more the lesions are limited to the arterial tree with absent or almost silent coronary events, the less specific the anatomical and clinical frameworks. To create a series of clinical records and on the basis of these assumptions, the authors report a case concerning the sudden death of a 43-year-old woman which occurred while an ergonometric test was being carried out 28 days after the onset of the symptoms. A subsequent postmortem investigation/autopsy enabled us to detect a granulomatous aortit…

What are the roles of calorie restriction and diet quality in promoting healthy longevity?

2014

Epidemiological and experimental data indicate that diet plays a central role in the pathogenesis of many age-associated chronic diseases, and in the biology of aging itself. Data from several animal studies suggest that the degree and time of calorie restriction (CR) onset, the timing of food intake as well as diet composition, play major roles in promoting health and longevity, breaking the old dogma that only calorie intake is important in extending healthy lifespan. Data from human studies indicate that long-term CR with adequate intake of nutrients results in several metabolic adaptations that reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease and cance…

Influence of Teacher and Family Support on University Student Motivation and Engagement

2021

Although many studies endorse the notion that the way students perceive support influences their engagement, very few have explored the possible mediator role of intention to learn between these variables. The present work provides new evidence to the existing literature because it analyses the work of intention to learn (measured with expectancy–value beliefs and achievement goals) as a mediating motivational variable in the relation between university students’ external support (teacher and family) and their engagement. The Educational Situation Quality Model (MOCSE, its acronym in Spanish) has employed as a theoretical framework to perform this analysis. A sample of 267 Spanish universit…

Air pollution in European countries and life expectancy—modelling with the use of neural network

2019

Abstract The present paper discusses a novel methodology based on neural network to determine air pollutants’ correlation with life expectancy in European countries. The models were developed using historical data from the period 1992–2016, for a set of 20 European countries. The subject of the analysis included the input variables of the following air pollutants: sulphur oxides, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, particulate matters, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and non-methane volatile organic compounds. Our main findings indicate that all the variables significantly affect life expectancy. Sensitivity of constructed neural networks to pollutants proved to be particularly important in …

Virtual and Augmented Reality in Finance: State Visibility of Events and Risk"

2021

This chapter reflected on the potential of Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality (VR / AR) technologies in supporting the dynamics of global financial systems and in addressing the grand challenges posed by unexpected events and crisis. The chapter briefly overviewed traditional VR/AR uses and described three early attempts to use 3D/ VR / AR technologies in Finance. In light of the recent financial crisis, there is a potential added valued in harnessing the use of VR/AR technologies to convey a greater visibility of the financial state (including visibility of financial risk). Various dimensions of the problem are considered. The chapter suggested a blend of service oriented computing SOC …

Currently, a growing number of programs become available in statistical software for multiple imputation of missing values. Among others, two algorithms are mainly implemented: Expectation Maximization (EM) and Multiple Imputation by Chained Equations (MICE). They have been shown to work well in large samples or when only small proportions of missing data are to be imputed. However, some researchers have begun to impute large proportions of missing data or to apply the method to small samples. A simulation was performed using MICE on datasets with 50, 100 or 200 cases and four or eleven variables. A varying proportion of data (3% - 63%) was set as missing completely at random and subsequent…
