Facework strategies and the achievement of multiple goals in a court martial cross-examination in the film A Few Good Men
2013
Following recent trends of research into television and film language that is being undertaken in various sub-disciplines of linguistics (Piazza et al. 2011), this article describes the nature of the interaction that takes place in the cross-examination of Colonel Jessep in the film ‘A Few Good Men’. The dialogue is from the last scene of the film and it exemplifies how the attorney manages to get the truth out of an uncooperative witness. It is not, however, only the outcome of the interaction itself that is of interest, but the process through which this is reached. By analyzing in detail the facework strategies enacted by the participants in the interaction towards themselves and others …
Responsability in management of the early stages in clinical evaluation of oral-facial traumatic events
2019

Is pain sensitivity altered in people with Alzheimer's disease? A systematic review and meta-analysis of experimental pain research
2016
Background Clinical studies suggest people with Alzheimer's disease (AD) have altered pain sensitivity. Experimental pain research is equivocal. Objective Conduct a meta-analysis to investigate if people with AD have altered pain sensitivity compared to healthy controls (HCs). Methods Three authors searched electronic databases from inception till November 2015 for experimental pain studies in AD vs. HCs. Outcome measures were pain threshold, tolerance, pain ratings, heart rate response to noxious stimuli and the Facial Action Coding System (FACS). Random effect meta-analysis calculating Hedges' g ± 95% confidence intervals (CI) was conducted. Results Thirteen studies were identified, inclu…
Chronic Diarrhea in a 5-Year-Old Girl: Pitfall in Routine Laboratory Testing with Potentially Severe Consequences
2009
A 5-year-old girl was referred because of recurrent watery diarrhea, abdominal pain, and flatulence. She was the second of 3 children. Her 10-year-old sister was normally developed and healthy. Her younger brother has meningomyelocele and hydrocephalus. At 1 year of age, the patient was admitted to the hospital for recurrent bronchitis, otitis media, food refusal, mild diarrhea, and abdominal distension since weaning. A sweat chloride analysis excluded cystic fibrosis. At that time, the patient’s laboratory results showed increased C-reactive protein (139 mg/L; reference interval, <5 mg/L) and moderate leukocytosis (14.6 × 109/L; reference interval, 4.5–13.5 × 109/L). Values for all other v…
Pre-service teachers’ experiences with a digital examination design: The inter-relation between continuity and change in an institutional context
2019
AbstractThis article reports a study of a full-scale digital examination in a five-year master program of teacher education in Norway. The innovative design involves observing a video case based on an authentic classroom situation and analysing the case in light of educational theory and subject content knowledge. All parts of this format are to be solved on a computer with Internet access. The study is centred on the pre-service teachers’ experiences of this open-ended and unfamiliar testing format. More specifically, the intention has been to analyse (a) what kinds of preparations they engaged in; (b) how they solved tasks during the examination; (c) their reflections on this mode of exam…
Syndrome de la fissure orbitaire supérieure post-traumatique : mise au point
2016
The traumatic superior orbital fissure syndrome is an uncommon complication of craniomaxillofacial trauma. The diagnosis is clinical and associates ophtalmoplegia (constantly at initial clinical examination), ptosis and anaesthesia of the forehead. Young men victim of road traffic accidents are most often affected. CT-scan usually shows facial and/or craniofacial fractures more or less spreading towards the superior orbital fissure. The absence of fracture seen at the X-rays does not eliminate the diagnosis. Initial management should be multidisciplinary (maxillofacial surgeons, ophthalmologists and neurosurgeons) and conducted early if possible. It combines high-dose corticosteroids and de…
Editor's Choice – Follow-up of Patients After Revascularisation for Peripheral Arterial Diseases: A Consensus Document From the European Society of C…
2019
International audience; Peripheral arterial diseases comprise different clinical presentations, from cerebrovascular disease down to lower extremity artery disease, from subclinical to disabling symptoms and events. According to clinical presentation, the patient's general condition, anatomical location and extension of lesions, revascularisation may be needed in addition to best medical treatment. The 2017 European Society of Cardiology guidelines in collaboration with the European Society for Vascular Surgery have addressed the indications for revascularisation. While most cases are amenable to either endovascular or surgical revascularisation, maintaining long-term patency is often chall…
Proposer des révisions intersessions aux étudiants de 1ère année : quelles relations avec la réussite aux examens ?
2013
This paper assesses a revision programme proposed to unsuccessful students between the two examination sessions within the framework of the "Plan réussite en Licence" in first year at the University of Burgundy, both in terms of student participation and links with achievement. The low participation of students is not associated with particular student profiles. An analysis of the students' future shows that student participation in the revision programme led to a lower drop-out risk during the second examination session and greater success, but only as regards the examinations of the 2nd semester. It should also be noted that student participation also has positive effects in the mid-term …
The Diagnosis and Treatment of Peripheral Arterial Vascular Disease
2016
Background In peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD), arterial stenosis or occlusion impairs perfusion in the territory of the distal portion of the aorta and the iliac and leg arteries. In Germany, the prevalence of PAOD rises with age, reaching 20% among persons over age 70. Methods This guideline was prepared by a collaboration of 22 medical specialty societies and two patient self-help organizations on the basis of pertinent publications that were retrieved by a systematic search in PubMed for articles that appeared from 2008 to April 2014, with a subsequent update to May 2015. Results 294 articles were assessed, including 34 systematic reviews and 98 randomized controlled trials …
