Understanding the Giant Enhancement of Exchange Interaction in Bi2Se3−EuS Heterostructures

2017

A recent experiment indicated that a ferromagnetic EuS film in contact with a topological insulator ${\mathrm{Bi}}_{2}{\mathrm{Se}}_{3}$ might show a largely enhanced Curie temperature and perpendicular magnetic anisotropy [F. Katmis et al., Nature (London) 533, 513 (2016).]. Through systematic density functional calculations, we demonstrate that in addition to the factor that ${\mathrm{Bi}}_{2}{\mathrm{Se}}_{3}$ has a strong spin orbit coupling, the topological surface states are crucial to make these unusual behaviors robust as they hybridize with EuS states and extend rather far into the magnetic layers. The magnetic moments of Eu atoms are nevertheless not much enhanced, unlike what was…

Magnetism of metallacrown single-molecule magnets: From a simplest model to realistic systems

2018

Electronic and magnetic properties of molecular nanomagnets are determined by competing energy scales due to the crystal field splitting, the exchange interactions between transition metal atoms, and relativistic effects. We present a comprehensive theory embracing all these phenomena based on first-principles calculations. In order to achieve this goal, we start from the ${\mathrm{FeNi}}_{4}$ cluster as a paradigm. The system can be accurately described on the ab initio level yielding all expected electronic states in a range of multiplicities from 1 to 9, with a ferromagnetic ground state. By adding the spin-orbit coupling between them we obtain the zero-field splitting. This allows to in…

Electron paramagnetic resonance study of theCe3+pair centers inYAlO3:Ce scintillator crystals

2015

Single crystals of $\mathrm{YAl}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ doped with Ce have been studied by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) at the 9.4 and 34 GHz microwave bands. Besides the single-ion $\mathrm{C}{\mathrm{e}}^{3+}$ spectrum, measurements have revealed many satellite lines which belong to the $\mathrm{C}{\mathrm{e}}^{3+}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{C}{\mathrm{e}}^{3+}$ pair centers. Their spectra have been fitted by a general effective spin Hamiltonian describing two interacting particles with the spin $S=1/2$. Corresponding $g$ factors and spin-spin coupling constants have been determined. The spin-spin coupling constants are in the range from 0.1 up to $0.65\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mat…

Exchange Interactions I: Mechanisms

1996

A most important phenomenon in molecular magnetism is the exchange interaction between magnetic centers. Its relevance as well as the terms and concepts required to its rationalization were stated long ago by physicists working in the quantum-mechanical theory of magnetism (Heisenberg, Dirac, van Vleck, Anderson, Zener, and many others). Depending on the extent of delocalization of the magnetic moments and on the metallic/non-metallic properties of the solid four kinds of exchange coupling were usually distinguished in the physical literature namely direct exchange, superexchange, indirect exchange and itinerant exchange [1]. The relations of these types of couplings are depicted in Figure …

Unmixing of binary alloys by a vacancy mechanism of diffusion: a computer simulation

1991

The initial stages of phase separation are studied for a model binary alloy (AB) with pairwise interactions e AA , e AB , e BB between nearest neighbors, assuming that there is no direct interchange of neighboring atoms possible, but only an indirect one mediated by vacancies (V) occurring in the system at a concentrationc v and which are strictly conserved, as are the concentrationsc A andc B of the two species.A-atoms may jump to vacant sites with jump rateГ A , B-atoms with jump rateГ B (in the absence of interactions). Particular attention is paid to the question to what extent nonuniform distribution of vacancies affects the unmixing kinetics. Our study focuses on the special caseГ A =…

Model calculations of phase diagrams of magnetic alloys on the body-centered-cubic lattice.

1987

We treat a model for a binary (AB) alloy, where species A is magnetic (Ising spin σi = ± 1) while species B is not, and repulsive interactions are assumed between first and second neighbors of the same kind, in addition to a nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic exchange interaction. Both the mean-field approximation, the cluster variation (CV) method in the tetrahedron approximation and the Monte Carlo (MC) method are applied; comparing the phase diagrams obtained by the various approximations their accuracy is tested. It is shown that the CV method is in rather close agreement with the MC method for the present problem.

Correlation in the transition-metal-based Heusler compoundsCo2MnSiandCo2FeSi

2006

Half-metallic ferromagnets, such as the Heusler compounds with formula ${X}_{2}YZ$, are expected to show an integer value for the spin magnetic moment. In contrast to experiments, calculations give noninteger values in certain cases where the compounds are based on $X=\mathrm{Co}$. In order to explain deviations of the magnetic moment calculated for such compounds, the dependence of the electronic structure on the lattice parameter was studied theoretically. In the local density approximation (LDA), the minimum total energy of ${\mathrm{Co}}_{2}\mathrm{FeSi}$ is found for the experimental lattice parameter, but the calculated magnetic moment is approximately 12% too low. In addition, half-m…

Classical Heisenberg antiferromagnets with nearest and next-nearest neighbor interactions on the face-centered cubic lattice: a model for EuTe?

1989

Magnetic properties of the Heisenberg antiferromagnet with spin quantum numberS→∞ on the face-centered cubic lattice are studied as function of temperature and magnetic field, using molecular field approximation and Monte Carlo methods. In order to model Europiumtelluride, we use isotropic exchange interactions between nearest- and nextnearest neighbors; the values of these exchange constants are taken from experiments. In addition, a pseudo-dipolar anisotropy (truncated after the next-nearest neighbor distance) is included; the molecular field calculations also are performed with the full dipolar of real EuTe in two respects: the structure in zero magnetic field involves 8 sublattices in t…

Aharonov–Bohm/Casher effect in a Kondo ring

2000

The in#uence of a magnetic impurity or ultrasmall quantum dot on the spin and charge persistent currents of a mesoscopic ring is investigated. The system consists of electrons in a one-dimensional ring threaded by spin-dependent Aharonov}Bohm/Casher #uxes, and coupled via an antiferromagnetic exchange interaction to a localized electron. The problem is mapped onto a Kondo model for the even-parity channel plus free electrons in the odd-parity channel. The twisted boundary conditions representing the #uxes couple states of opposite parity unless the twist angles / a satisfy / a "f a p, where f a are integers, with spin index a"C, B. For these special values of / a , the model is solvable by …

Soft modes and mode splitting in paramagnetic TbP§

1980

In contrast to spin-only systems the paramagnetic phases of systems with crystal field split ground multiplets exhibit magnetic excitations of finite energy. In the presence of a magnetic exchange coupling the excitons will propagate through the lattice. A measurement of the dispersion allows in principle an insight into the exchange interaction, which is of fundamental importance for the understanding of the magnetic phenomena. Unfortunately the evolution of the dispersion at low temperatures is in most cases interrupted by the onset of magnetic order due to an alignment of the magnetic moments of the crystal field ground state. A noticeable dispersion of well-defined excitons is only expe…
