Monolingualism and creativity : scientific discourse and linguistic diversity in human and social sciences

Whether or not monolingualism ??academic English, in practice?? is favourable for the production of knowledge in human and social sciences is now called into question. In order to further their careers, researchers seek to publicise their work by publishing in the most prestigious, best-known international journals. But we must not ignore the limits set by the operation of these journals on the production of innovative knowledge to challenge our intellectual routines. We can support the idea that creativity in social and human sciences benefits more from preserving a plurality of scientific production spaces than from a single homogeneous space, which usually tends to fall into complacency.
Genetic dissection of plexin signaling in vivo

Mammalian plexins constitute a family of transmembrane receptors for semaphorins and represent critical regulators of various processes during development of the nervous, cardiovascular, skeletal, and renal system. In vitro studies have shown that plexins exert their effects via an intracellular R-Ras/M-Ras GTPase-activating protein (GAP) domain or by activation of RhoA through interaction with Rho guanine nucleotide exchange factor proteins. However, which of these signaling pathways are relevant for plexin functions in vivo is largely unknown. PurposeThe study aims to test the existence of a meeting clustering effect in the Spanish Stock Exchange (SSE).Design/methodology/approachThis paper studies the relationship between the clustering of annual general meetings and stock returns in the SSE. Good practices and actions for sustainable municipal solid waste management in the tourist sector

This paper deals with waste management in the tourism sector, specifically in the agro-tourism structures. Two regions of Romania and Italy have been considered as case studies in order to promote good practices and actions for sustainable municipal solid waste management. Specific criteria to adopt for the sustainable consumption of beverages and food and for the sustainable use of packaging of various types have been analyzed and suggested. The adoption of an indicator at the level of the single tourist structure has been proposed to help self-analysis that is aimed at setting the priorities of intervention for improving its environmental sustainability.
Evolution of worldwide stock markets, correlation structure and correlation based graphs

We investigate the daily correlation present among market indices of stock exchanges located all over the world in the time period Jan 1996 - Jul 2009. We discover that the correlation among market indices presents both a fast and a slow dynamics. The slow dynamics reflects the development and consolidation of globalization. The fast dynamics is associated with critical events that originate in a specific country or region of the world and rapidly affect the global system. Nalidixic acid-resistant V79 cells with reduced DNA topoisomerase II activity and amplification prone phenotype

Spontaneously nalidixic acid-resistant lines (NAr lines) were selected from a V79 Chinese hamster cell line and phenotypically characterized. NAr lines showed an increased doubling time, a higher number of spontaneous SCE, and more interestingly, decreased DNA topoisomerase II activity. These lines were also cross-resistant to the eukaryotic topoisomerase II inhibitors etoposide and adriamycin, but showed the same level of sensitivity as the parental line to the DNA topoisomerase I inhibitor camptothecin. Dual-polarization-pump CW laser operation in Nd3+:LiNbO3 channel waveguides fabricated by reverse proton exchange

Abstract In this work, continuous-wave laser action at 1084.5 nm at room temperature in LiNbO 3 :Nd 3+ channel waveguides, fabricated by reverse proton exchange (RPE), is reported. The sample was pumped at λ = 808 nm in either σ or π-polarized configurations, TE- and TM-pumping schemes, being the laser emission π-polarized at all power levels. The laser characteristics, as function of the pumping scheme (TE or TM), have been obtained. In both cases, the laser emission was stable, without any reduction in the output power even under continuous pump operation at maximum power at room temperature, indicating high resistance to photorefractive damage.
