Safety culture: a perpetual challenge or an opportunity for Romanian companies?

2020

The main objective of the paper is to analyze the safety culture in order to understand how theory and practice can be integrated to improve safety performance and related economic outcomes. The research includes the synthesis of systematic studies on safety culture and the factors that influence the relationship between organizational culture and safety behavior. In a global manner, the results obtained generate relevant insights into how safety culture can be theoretically systematized and provide a series of recommendations that can guide the development of future safety culture interventions. Finally, a framework is proposed for an in-depth understanding of all the implications of safet…

Supporting Small Medium Enterprises planning through the use of a step-by-step System Dynamics model building process

2011

This paper aims to support small medium enterprises (SMEs) in business planning through the use of system dynamics models. In particular, it has been hypothesized that through the use of a step-by-step system dynamics model building process SMEs’ entrepreneurs can better understand the net of cause-and-effect relationships underlying company financial and non-financial results. Such an approach also enables decision makers to improve their understanding about the figures portrayed in a balance sheet. In order to reach such a goal, this study has been carried out through the use of a case-study. The small company investigated is a leather handcraft operating in Indonesia. The paper makes e…

Integrating Keyword Advertising and Dynamic Pricing for an Online Market Place

2014

Keyword Advertising is a main marketing instrument for e-commerce companies in order to generate traffic from search engines on their website. The costs for Keyword Advertising are determined in an auction that is conducted for every single search query, which is entered in by a user. In case of an online market place, each adlink provided by the search engine refers to an ordered list of products on the website of the online market place. Hereby, the price of the product is oftentimes one important criteria for the user when deciding for one or the other product from the list. However, existing models assume the price of products to be exogeneous. By taking into account the prices of linke…

Cultural Industries: Product-Market Characteristics, Management Challenges and Industry Dynamics

2014

During the last decade, cultural industries have grown in economic importance, and research interest in them has increased. Despite prolific research, there is a lack of a comprehensive view on the subject. The purpose of the present paper is to offer a reconceptualization of cultural industries by tracing their boundaries, their features and the dynamics that follow from these features. This is achieved through a review of 314 cultural industries studies, whereby a classification system of three main and six sub-categories is constructed. On the basis of the review, a framework for future research is presented. Most importantly, future research should examine selection criteria and selecti…

Managing adoption by cultural development: Exploring the plant level effect of a ‘Company Specific Production System’ (XPS) in a Norwegian multinatio…

2020

Purpose: ‘Company Specific Production Systems’ (XPS) aim to adopt ‘best practice’ across plants within a company. A pertinent issue in the literature involves the constraints in the possibilities of realising such an adoption. This paper addresses to what extent and how a Norwegian multinational succeeded in adopting the XPS in its local plants. Design/methodology/approach: A Brazilian, Chinese and Norwegian plant of a Norwegian electro-chemical company were studied from 2017 to 2019. Our data consist of the results of the plant’s assessment performance program, combined with interviews and observations at different organizational levels. Findings: The MNC had largely managed to adopt the X…

Trends and cycles in U.S. job mobility

2021

Recent studies document a decline in U.S. labor-market fluidity from as early as the 1970s on. Making use of the Annual Social and Economic (ASEC) supplement to the Current Population Survey (CPS), I uncover a pronounced increase in job-to-job mobility from the 1970s to the 1990s, i.e., the annual share of continuously employed job-to-job movers rises from 5.9 percent of the labor force in 1975–1979 to 8.8 percent in 1995–1999. Job-to-job mobility exhibits a downward trend only since the turn of the millennium. In order to provide a formal economic interpretation, I additionally estimate the parameters of the random on-the-job search model. Furthermore, I document that job-to-job mobility h…

Innovative IC framework in the non profit sector

2012

The importance of intellectual capital in the non-profit sector generates the need to measure its role in the value creation process. The purpose of the paper is to study the application of intellectual capital within the non-profit sector, by turning attention to resources such as: knowledge, experience, and skills. Organizations, which are able to increase the knowledge of their staff and transform this knowledge into skills to improve services, can easily meet users’ needs and, thereby, become competitive. This contribution proposes to study how people’s knowledge can contribute to increasing social value, which is the non–profit organization’s aim. Furthermore, the goal is to de…

Loss of ATM sensitizes against O6-methylguanine triggered apoptosis, SCEs and chromosomal aberrations.

2003

A critical pre-cytotoxic and -apoptotic DNA lesion induced by methylating carcinogens and chemotherapeutic drugs is O6-methylguanine (O6MeG). The mechanism by which O6MeG causes cell death via apoptosis is only partially understood. The current model ascribes a role to DNA replication and mismatch repair, which converts O6MeG into a critical distal lesion (presumably a DNA double-strand break) that is finally responsible for genotoxicity and apoptosis. Here we analysed whether the PI3-like kinase ATM is involved in this process. ATM is a major player in recognizing and signaling DNA breaks, but most reports are limited to ionizing radiation. Comparing mouse ATM knockout fibroblasts (ATM-/-)…

Brca2/Xrcc2 dependent HR, but not NHEJ, is required for protection against O6-methylguanine triggered apoptosis, DSBs and chromosomal aberrations by …

2008

Abstract O 6 -methylguanine (O 6 MeG) is a highly critical DNA adduct induced by methylating carcinogens and anticancer drugs such as temozolomide, streptozotocine, procarbazine and dacarbazine. Induction of cell death by O 6 MeG lesions requires mismatch repair (MMR) and cell proliferation and is thought to be dependent on the formation of DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) or, according to an alternative hypothesis, direct signaling by the MMR complex. Given a role for DSBs in this process, either homologous recombination (HR) or non-homologous end joining (NHEJ) or both might protect against O 6 MeG. Here, we compared the response of cells mutated in HR and NHEJ proteins to temozolomide and…

DEXML: A First Step Toward a UML Based Implementation Framework for PLCS

2011

Data exchange specifications not only must be broad and general to achieve acceptance, but also must be customizable in a controlled and interoperable manner to be useful. The Product Life Cycle Support (PLCS) suite of data exchange specifications (known as DEXs) uses templates to enable controlled customizability without sacrificing breadth or interoperability. DEXs are business context-specific subsets of ISO 10303 Application Protocol (AP) 239, subject to additional constraints imposed by the templates. A PLCS template defines how AP239 entities and their attributes will be instantiated using an externally-defined controlled vocabulary defined in a Reference Data Library. Template instan…
