The collaborative consistent vehicle routing problem with workload balance
2021
Abstract The rising competition in the logistics sector forces companies to be more economically efficient. One of the major sources of inefficiency is the incomplete usage of available resources, such as vehicles’ capacities. Mechanism that allow to better exploit such resources by enabling carrier collaborations are on the rise. Our study examines a centrally organized multi-period collaborative vehicle routing problem, where carriers can exchange customers who have to be serviced on a regular basis. Collaborations, where carriers serve frequent customers, are supposed to face the problem of (i) time consistency in terms of visiting time, and of (ii) service consistency. The latter ensure…
Changing the strategy formation process in a service cooperative
2010
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to concern the strategic changes a firm needs to incorporate in order to deliver a complex service such as providing assistance to the socially disadvantaged. The paper seeks to analyze the development of such a process considering the ability of managers to exploit resources and foster new opportunities for the firm.Design/methodology/approachThe qualitative methodology applied is that of a case study. The organization analyzed was a service cooperative. A semi‐structured questionnaire was used to gather the information along with documents and additional information thereafter, thus facilitating the triangulation process.FindingsNon‐profit service organ…
TRAVELLING TOWARDS AND FROM MINOR ISLANDS THROUGH NON-CONVENTIONAL AIR TRANSPORT: DEMAND AND COST ANALYSIS
2010
This research addresses the role of innovative forms of passenger air transport in favouring mobility of tourists visiting minor islands. In particular, we studied the feasibility of scheduled transport services using helicopter and seaplane for connecting Sicily in the south of Italy, to the near and very attractive Eolie Islands rapidly. In order to estimate the potential service demand, we allowed for the number of tourists arriving in the Eolie Archipelago during the period 1999-2008. In detail, we considered only the market of visitors with a high willingness-to-pay for time savings (individuals choosing superior hotels) coming from origins at least 300 km away from the Eolie Islands. …
Exploring web-mediated communication: A genre-based linguistic study for new patterns of doctor–patient interaction in online environment
2016
This paper questions the nature of the communicative event that takes place in online contexts between doctors and web-users, showing computer-mediated linguistic norms and discussing the nature of the participants’ roles. Based on an analysis of 1005 posts occurring between doctors and the users of health service websites, I analyse how doctor–patient communication is affected by the medium and how health professionals overcome issues concerning the virtual medical visit. Results suggest that (a) online medical answers offer a different service from that expected by users, as doctors cannot always fulfill patient requests, and (b) net consultations use aspects of traditional doctor–patient…
Evolving e-government benchmarking to better cover technology development and emerging societal needs
2012
Many international e-government benchmarks seek to measure progress towards various versions of a digital society, and in this endeavor include a component of e-government. But because comparable international e-government data are scarce, most reports rely on the United Nations E-Government Development Index, specifically its Online Service Index as a benchmark. However, this assessment only captures national level initiatives at a broad level and does not link evaluation to outcomes and impacts, i.e. e-government performance relative to investment. This paper briefly reviews the current UN framework and assesses how it can evolve to meet new demands, such as calls to better connect investm…
Performance evaluation of differentiated access mechanisms effectiveness in 802.11 networks
2005
The IEEE 802.11e draft specification aims to extend the original 802.11 MAC protocol by introducing priority mechanisms able to manage bandwidth and resource allocation according to the QoS needs of real-time applications. Different strategies based on MAC parameter diversifications, such as contention window limits, contention window updating factor and silence monitoring time, can be pursued in order to provide service differentiation, also in the case of distributed access. In this paper, we investigate on the behaviour of each differentiation possibility under different load conditions and traffic requirements. Our results show that the most powerful mechanisms which provide service dif…
Datamining: Pemanfaatan Algoritma Apriori dalam Menganalisa Pola-Pola Transaksi yang Terjadi
2012
This paper will be described about implementation and analysis of the well-known apriori algorithm, which is called Market Basket Analysis (MBA) in data mining. This algorithm is widely used to predict the relation among market basket in the huge amount of database. This algorithm is based on the concept of a prefix tree. There are several ways to organize the nodes of such a tree, to encode the items, and to organize the transactions, which may be used in order to minimize the time needed to find the frequent itemsets as well as to reduce the amount of memory needed to store the counters. The rules produced will be used by management of supermarket to organize the items set to increase the…
Correlation based hierarchical clustering in financial time series
2005
We review a correlation based clustering procedure applied to a portfolio of assets synchronously traded in a financial market. The portfolio considered consists of the set of 500 highly capitalized stocks traded at the New York Stock Exchange during the time period 1987-1998. We show that meaningful economic information can be extracted from correlation matrices.
A Posteriori Methods
1998
A posteriori methods could also be called methods for generating Pareto optimal solutions. After the Pareto optimal set (or a part of it) has been generated, it is presented to the decision maker, who selects the most preferred among the alternatives. The inconveniences here are that the generation process is usually computationally expensive and sometimes in part, at least, difficult. On the other hand, it is hard for the decision maker to select from a large set of alternatives. One more important question is how to present or display the alternatives to the decision maker in an effective way. The working order in these methods is: 1) analyst, 2) decision maker.
Semantic traffic applications based on DatexII
2009
In this work we demonstrate a particular use of ontologies based on the European specifications DATEXII. These specifications are designed and developed as a traffic and travel data exchange mechanism by a European task force to set up and standardise the interface between traffic control and information centres. It is the reference for applications that are developed and implemented in Europe. This language describes concepts and structures of data related to traffic, but the description is just syntactic, not semantic. Therefore the objective to be reached in this part of the research has been to develop a semantic description in order to carry out some applications like syndication and a …
