Empirical research in the school context

2016

Service-Learning is an educational methodology which combines learning processes and community service. The aim of this chapter is to spread the conceptualisation of an educational method only recently applied in Spain and to present an SL initiative in which the stages for its application are set forth. A theoretical review of literature is given in order to substantiate the foundations of SL methodology and there is later a case study to carry out a contextualised proposal for a real situation. The results lead to the conclusion that the SL proposed creates learning processes favouring pupils’ personal and ethical development. This is an innovative procedure that represents a change in th…

Evaluating European Union support for innovation in Spanish small and medium enterprises

2009

Finding funding is one of the main problems small and medium enterprises (SMEs) face, which is why the European Union has set up programmes to support SME development. This paper has two objectives: firstly, to describe the different European funding programmes available to Spanish firms; secondly, to present an empirical study on the use Spanish SMEs (and especially, SMEs in the service sector) make of these programmes in order to innovate, together with an analysis of the importance these funding programmes have on SME innovation.

Experimental Study of the Effects of EIPA, Losartan, and BQ-123 on Electrophysiological Changes Induced by Myocardial Stretch

2015

Early-stage thermal performance design of thermo-active walls implemented in underground infrastructures

2022

Abstract Energy geostructures (EGs) represent an innovative technology in the sustainable energy agenda and are useful for satisfying the energy needs of the built environment. They are usually involving geostructures such as piles, walls, tunnels, shafts, and sewers. The application of such technology to infrastructure projects may have considerable thermal potential because of the large surfaces that can be thermally activated. This study focuses on thermo-active walls (energy walls, EWs), which are retaining structures used to sustain the sides of excavations. Key features related to their thermal design are examined, and a design methodology is proposed. The heat-exchange modes involvin…

Software Defined Machine-to-Machine Communication for Smart Energy Management in Power Grids

2020

The successful realization of smart energy management relies on ubiquitous and reliable information exchange among millions of sensors and actuators deployed in the field with little or no human intervention. This motivates us to introduce a unified communication framework for smart energy management by exploring the integration of software-defined networking (SDN) with M2M communication. In this chapter, the overall design of the software-defined M2M (SD-M2M) framework is presented, with an emphasis on its technical contributions to cost reduction, fine granularity resource allocation, and end-to-end QoS guarantee. Then, a case study is conducted for a electric vehicle energy management sy…

Energy recovery from Municipal Solid Waste in EU: proposals to assess the management performance under a circular economy perspective

2017

In 2015 the European Commission issued a package of documents on Circular Economy concerning an integrated revision of legislative proposals on waste management. The aim was to stimulate a European transition towards a circular economy concept, which is expected to foster competitiveness, sustainable economic growth and new jobs generation. Three indicators are proposed in this paper to contribute to the assessment of the energy recovery management performance from MSW in a scenario of circular economy: a) referring to MSW directly used (RMSW) or indirectly used (SRF) as input of thermochemical plants, an indicator can be the percentage of waste having LHV > 13MJ/kg; b) referring to the MSW…

Energy Equalization and the Case of the “nZEB Hotels”

2020

Nowadays, energy equalization is one of the many issues concerning the energy policies on the urban scale and in the perspective of reducing the Urban Heat Island effects (UHI-e). The different economic-financial profiles of the interventions implemented in the buildings having a wide range of climatic locations, typological arrangements, architectural-historical constraints, need to be coordinated within unitary local energy-environmental policies inspired by economic-financial as well as environmental issues. The renovation of existing hotels to achieve a nearly Zero-Energy performance is one of the goals of the 2050 EU’s energy policy. This paper presents the nZEB retrofit case of an exi…

Augmented Reality Aided 3D Modelling

2014

The purpose of the article is to introduce possibilities of using Augmented Reality instructions in order to better understand technical drawings. The aim of these instructions based on 3D models is to create AR training applications and analyze their impact on the users. These instructions consist in a 3D model, superimposed over the technical drawing. The AR application also offers step by step instructions for 3D modelling in CAD software, which are very useful in creating the 3D model starting from a technical drawing. The AR application was tested by students from the Faculty of Engineering in Sibiu, obtaining great improvements in their 3D modelling times. The results of a survey that…

When industry and academia meet: the development of a robotized semiautomatic motorcycle transmission

2017

Abstract The development of the business - industry environment is unconceivable without the involvement of academia. On one hand, the universities can provide new perspectives and know-how which can be further translated into exquisite products and services for companies. On the other hand, the business environment can raise practical problems and challenges for academia, providing in the same time material support for finding solutions to these problems. This paper presents a successful partnership between business and academia materialized in the development of a robotized semiautomatic motorcycle transmission. Since the solutions existing on the market did not meet the specific requirem…

Translating the Global Script of the Sustainable University: The Case of the University of Oslo

2015

In this chapter, Translating the Global Script of the Sustainable University: The Case of the University of Oslo, Romulo Pinheiro, Maryam Faghihimani and Jarle Trondal discuss the green strategy of University of Oslo. This chapter, which is conceptually based on neo-institutional theory, approaches the notion of the ‘sustainable organisation’ as a global, legitimate script, i.e. a dominant hegemonic idea which, once adopted and consequently adapted locally, is likely to enhance both internal and external legitimacy. This analysis is built on the empirical case of the University of Oslo (UiO), that sheds light on the ways in which the notion of a ‘sustainable university’ has been locally ‘tr…
