Average charge states of heavy and superheavy ions passing through a rarified gas: Theory and experiment

2013

The average charge states $\overline{q}$ of heavy and superheavy ions (atomic numbers $Z=80$--114) passing through He gas are studied experimentally and theoretically. Experimental data were measured at the gas-filled recoil separator, i.e., the TransActinide Separator and Chemistry Apparatus (TASCA) at GSI Darmstadt, for ion energies of a few hundred keV/u at gas pressures of 0.2 to 2.0 mbar. An attempt is made to describe experimental $\overline{q}$ values by means of atomic calculations of the binding energies and electron-loss and electron-capture cross sections. The influence of the gas-density effect is included in the calculations. The calculated $\overline{q}$ reproduce the experime…

High-resolution studies of beta-delayed proton emitters at IGISOL facility

1998

Beta-decays of23Al and41Ti have been studied by applying ion guide techniques, gamma detection and a gas-Si telescope for charged-particle detection. The experimental beta-decay strength of41Ti was found to be quenched by a factor ofq2 = 0.64 compared to our shell model calculations below 8 MeV excitation energy in41Sc. This result is in line with the generally accepted value ofq = 0.77. The isobaric analogue state of the41Ti ground state was measured to contain 10(8)% isospin impurity. This relatively high value could be well reproduced by the shell model calculation in thesdfp space. Gamma-decay of theT = 3/2 isobaric analogue state in23Mg was observed together with its decay by proton em…

Mass Measurements and Implications for the Energy of the High-Spin Isomer inAg94

2008

Nuclides in the vicinity of {sup 94}Ag have been studied with the Penning trap mass spectrometer JYFLTRAP at the Ion-Guide Isotope Separator On-Line. The masses of the two-proton-decay daughter {sup 92}Rh and the beta-decay daughter {sup 94}Pd of the high-spin isomer in {sup 94}Ag have been measured, and the masses of {sup 93}Pd and {sup 94}Ag have been deduced. When combined with the data from the one-proton- or two-proton-decay experiments, the results lead to contradictory mass excess values for the high-spin isomer in {sup 94}Ag, -46 370(170) or -44 970(100) keV, corresponding to excitation energies of 6960(400) or 8360(370) keV, respectively.

Tz=−1→0βdecays ofNi54,Fe50,Cr46, andTi42and comparison with mirror(He3,t)measurements

2015

We have studied the β decay of the Tz=−1, f7/2 shell nuclei Ni54, Fe50, Cr46, and Ti42 produced in fragmentation reactions. The proton separation energies in the daughter Tz=0 nuclei are relatively large (≈4–5 MeV) so studies of the γ rays are essential. The experiments were performed at GSI as part of the Stopped-beam campaign with the RISING setup consisting of 15 Euroball Cluster Ge detectors. From the newly obtained high precision β-decay half-lives, excitation energies, and β branching ratios, we were able to extract Fermi and Gamow-Teller transition strengths in these β decays. With these improved results it was possible to compare in detail the Gamow-Teller (GT) transition strengths …

Production of pionic atoms in (n,p) reactions

1990

Abstract We make a theoretical study of the (n, p) reaction leading to the production of deeply bound nuclear pionic states. The cross sections obtained for the excitation of the 1s and 2p states in 208 Pb are found to be very small compared to the background at T n = 400 MeV. At energies around T n = 1000 MeV the chances are better but the ratio of signal to background is still only around 5% for the 2p states and 0.4% for the 1s state. The possibility of performing some extract coincidence test to reduce the background is indicated.

Thermonuclear reactionS30(p,γ)Cl31studied via Coulomb breakup ofCl31

2014

Coulomb breakup at high energy in inverse kinematics of proton-rich Cl-31 was used to constrain the thermonuclear S-30(p,gamma)Cl-31 capture reaction rate under typical Type I x-ray burst conditions. This reaction is a bottleneck during rapid proton-capture nucleosynthesis (rp process), where its rate depends predominantly on the nuclear structure of Cl-31. Two low-lying states just above the proton-separation threshold of S-p = 296( 50) keV in Cl-31 have been identified experimentally using the (RB)-B-3-LAND setup at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum fur Schwerionenforschung GmbH. Both states are considered to play a key role in the thermonuclear S-30( p,gamma)Cl-31 capture reaction. Excitation ene…

The dipole response of nuclei with large neutron excess

2003

The dipole response of neutron-rich nuclei in the mass range from A = 10 to A = 22 and with mass to charge ratios of 2.5 to 2.8 has been invesitigated experimentally utilizing electromagnetic excitation in heavy-ion collisions at beam energies around 600 MeV/u.

Collective 2$^{+1}$ excitations in$^{206}$Po and$^{208,210}$Rn

2016

In the present study, $B(E2; 2^{+}_{1}\rightarrow 0^{+}_{1})$ values have been measured in the 208,210Rn and 206Po nuclei through Coulomb excitation of re-accelerated radioactive beams in inverse kinematics at CERN-ISOLDE. These nuclei have been proposed to lie in, or at the boundary of the region where the seniority scheme should persist. However, contributions from collective excitations are likely to be present when moving away from the N=126 closed shell. Such an effect is confirmed by the observed increased collectivity of the $2^{+}_{1}\rightarrow 0^{+}_{1}$ transitions. Experimental results have been interpreted with the aid of theoretical studies carried out within the BCS-based QRP…

Invariant-mass spectroscopy of $^{10}$Li and $^{11}$Li

1997

Break-up of secondary Li-11 ion beams (280 MeV/nucleon) on C and Pb targets into Li-9 and neutrons is studied experimentally. Cross sections and neutron multiplicity distributions are obtained, characterizing different reaction mechanisms. Invariant-mass spectroscopy for Li-11 and Li-10 is performed. The E1 strength distribution, deduced from electromagnetic excitation of Li-11 up to an excitation energy of 4 MeV comprises similar to 8% of the Thomas-Reiche-Kuhn energy-weighted sumrule strength. Two low-lying resonance-like structures are observed for Li-10 at decay energies of 0.21(5) and 0.62(10) MeV, the former one carrying 26(10)% of the strength and likely to be associated with an s-wa…
